Sexual orientation differences in treatment expectation, alliance, and outcome among patients at risk for suicide in a public psychiatric hospital.

BACKGROUND: Sexual minority (SM) individuals (gay, lesbian, bisexual, or otherwise nonheterosexual) are at increased risk for mental disorders and suicide and adequate mental healthcare may be life-saving. However, SM patients experience barriers in mental healthcare that have been attributed to the lack of SM-specific competencies and heterosexist attitudes and behaviors on the part of mental health professionals. Such barriers could have a negative impact on common treatment factors such as treatment expectancy or therapeutic alliance, culminating in poorer treatment outcomes for SM versus h

A lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender dedicated inpatient psychiatric unit in rural New England: a descriptive analysis in demographics, service utilisation and needs.

AIMS AND OBJECTIVES: To develop an understanding of lesbian-, gay-, bisexual-, transgender-specific mental health and substance abuse needs in rural populations and to improve data about sexual orientation and gender identity. BACKGROUND: Existing literature on mental health needs for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender populations has continued to reveal higher levels of need. Research has also demonstrated that few mental health providers have expertise or comfort in treating lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender clients. DESIGN: Descriptive correlational study. METHODS: A sample (n =

Uthando Lwethu ('our love'): a protocol for a couples-based intervention to increase testing for HIV: a randomized controlled trial in rural KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa.

BACKGROUND: Couples-based HIV counseling and testing (CHCT) is a proven strategy to reduce the risk of HIV transmission between partners, but uptake of CHCT is low. We describe the study design of a randomized controlled trial (RCT) aimed to increase participation in CHCT and reduce sexual risk behavior for HIV among heterosexual couples in rural KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. We hypothesize that the rate of participation in CHCT will be higher and sexual risk behavior will be lower in the intervention group as compared to the control. METHODS/DESIGN: Heterosexual couples (N=350 couples, 700 in

[Mpox clade Ib: an inescapable global threat].

In 2024 it was reported that 92% of mpox cases from Africa were from the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and 66% of people diagnosed were juveniles under 15 years of age. In this outbreak, it is the clade I, in its variant Ib, and the transmission is more of heterosexual nature. In this editorial article some questions concerning this new mpox outbreak are made.

Syphilis in Pregnant Women and Congenital Syphilis in Japan, 2022 to 2023: A Warning for Other Countries.

After a brief decline, syphilis case counts among pregnant women reported through Japan's national surveillance doubled from 2021 to 2023; congenital syphilis case counts/100,000 live births also doubled to >5. The unprecedented trends in Japan highlight the current heterosexual syphilis epidemic's relentlessness, with important implications for other countries.

LGBTQ+ family building: progress but lots more to do.

Great strides have been made in society and in reproductive endocrinology and infertility in support of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer/questioning. Although many of the concepts used in heterosexual reproduction can be applied to the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer/questioning plus community, there are specific differences that should be understood to provide the highest level of care to this community.

[Progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy in a patient with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome].

We report a 28 year old heterosexual male with AIDS that presented with progressive motor disturbances and malaise. Light and transmission electron microscopy of a stereotaxic brain biopsy demonstrated a progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy. This is a demyelinating infectious cerebral disease attributed to JC virus and must be considered in the differential diagnosis of central nervous system disturbances in AIDS patients.

Risk perception of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) among university students and men who have sex with men (MSM) in the Netherlands.

Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) are on the rise across Europe, with the Netherlands experiencing a marked increase. The present research explores how STI risk perception is understood and experienced among two high-incidence populations: men who have sex with men (MSM) and heterosexual university students. Sixteen semi-structured interviews (8 MSM, 8 students) were conducted and analyzed by reflexive thematic analysis. Four central themes were identified: risk behaviors, risk awareness, perceived severity, and affective responses. Both samples reported behaviors that elevate STI risk, i

What Does It Take to Make an Incel: The Role of Paranoid Thinking, Depression, Anxiety, and Attachment Patterns.

BACKGROUND: The term "incel" (involuntary celibate) refers to the members of an online subculture, mainly composed of heterosexual men. These individuals find it difficult or impossible to have a romantic and/or sexual partner, and they express extreme anger and resentment toward women, as they hold them accountable for their "inceldom." In recent years, online and offline acts of violence have been perpetrated by incels, raising concern at social and political levels. This study aims to understand the personal, psychological, and psychopathological variables that may contribute to developing

Problem Gambling and Sexual Minority Individuals: Evaluating Influence of Age and Comorbid Mental Health and Substance Use Problems.

Little is known about the prevalence of problem gambling among sexual minority individuals. The present study utilized an epidemiological sample, including individuals identifying as lesbian, gay, bisexual, asexual, and pansexual, to explore gambling behavior and problems and associated mental health and comorbid conditions that may contribute to elevated risk. Bivariate comparisons found that sexual minority individuals had higher rates of problem gambling, alcohol and substance use problems, anxiety, depression, and a wide range of problem behaviors (e.g., binge eating, prostitution, excessi

Increased heterozygosity in low-pass sequencing data allows identification of blood chimeras in cattle.

In about 90% of multiple pregnancies in cattle, shared blood circulation between fetuses leads to genetic chimerism in peripheral blood and can reduce reproductive performance in heterosexual co-twins. However, the early detection of heterosexual chimeras requires specialized tests. Here, we used low-pass sequencing data with a median coverage of 0.64× generated from blood samples of 322 F1 crosses between beef and dairy cattle and identified 20 putative blood chimeras through increased levels of genome-wide heterozygosity. In contrast, for 77 samples with routine SNP microarray data generated

HIV/AIDS stigma accumulation among people living with HIV: a role of general and relative minority status.

The main objective of the study was to investigate the relationship between selected sociodemographic factors (i.e. sexual orientation, gender and AIDS status), and the level of HIV/AIDS stigma among people living with HIV (PLWH). The participants were 663 adults with a medically confirmed diagnosis of HIV infection, undergoing antiretroviral treatment. Their level of HIV/AIDS stigma was assessed with the Berger HIV Stigma Scale, and relevant sociodemographic and clinical data were obtained using a self-report survey. The main effect was revealed only for sexual orientation and total stigma; t

Sexual minority service user perspectives on mental health treatment barriers to care and service improvements.

Sexual minorities (individuals with a lesbian, gay, bisexual, queer, or other non-heterosexual identity) are at elevated risk of developing common mental health disorders relative to heterosexual people, yet have less favourable mental health service experiences and poorer treatment outcomes. We investigated the experiences of sexual minority service users accessing mental health services for common mental health problems (e.g. depression or anxiety) in the UK. We recruited 26 sexual minority adults with experiences of being referred to Improving Access to Psychological Therapies (IAPT) or pri

Sexual Orientation, Social Determinants of Health, and Unmet Substance Use Treatment Need: Findings from a National Survey.

Background: In 2018, an estimated 89% of individuals who needed treatment for substance use did not have their need met. Compared to heterosexuals, the disparity between needing and receiving treatment is thought to be even higher for sexual minorities. Yet, few studies have investigated sexual orientation and its relationship to unmet treatment need or the association between sexual orientation and specific reasons for the inability to enter treatment. Understanding these reasons is critical to eradicating barriers to treatment for sexual minorities. Obejctives: Using pooled data from the 201

Bidirectional Intimate Partner Violence Among Chinese Women: Patterns and Risk Factors.

Bidirectional intimate partner violence (BIPV) refers to the co-occurrence of violence perpetration by both partners. BIPV has been analyzed using samples from different sociodemographic contexts but has yet to be fully explored in China. The present study employed a latent class approach to identify BIPV patterns, rates of prevalence, and associated risk factors among a sample of 1,301 heterosexual adult women in mainland China. Five distinct patterns of BIPV were identified, including (a) bidirectional psychological aggression, (b) bidirectional violence of all types, (c) multi-type victimiz

Substance Use Among Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Questioning Adolescents in the United States, 2015.

OBJECTIVES: To provide current national estimates of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and questioning (LGBQ) adolescents' (grades 9-12) substance use risks. METHODS: The 2015 national Youth Risk Behavior Survey included questions for 19 substance use outcomes covering 15 substances. LGBQ adolescents' substance use was described and their risk relative to heterosexual adolescents was estimated after controlling for sociodemographic confounders. RESULTS: In controlled analyses, we found that LGBQ adolescents were 1.12 (95% confidence interval [CI] = 1.06, 1.19) times as likely as heterosexual adolescen

Investigation of a large community-based outbreak of hepatitis B infection in the United Kingdom.

We describe the largest outbreak of hepatitis B virus infection reported to date in the UK. Between July 2001 and December 2005, 237 cases were identified in Avon, South West England. The likely route of transmission was injecting drug use in 44% (104/237) and heterosexual intercourse in 30% (71/237) of cases. A case-control study in injectors showed that injecting crack cocaine [adjusted odds ratio (aOR) 23·8, 95% confidence interval (CI) 3·04-186, P<0·001] and sharing injecting paraphernalia in the year before diagnosis (aOR 16·67, 95% CI 1·78-100, P=0·010) were strongly associated with acut

Lesbians' drinking patterns: beyond the data.

Early studies report very high rates of "alcohol abuse" and alcoholism among lesbians. However, serious methodological problems, including nonrepresentative samples that were often recruited in lesbian or gay lesbian bars, limit the validity of findings from these studies. In this article, I briefly review the literature on lesbians' use of alcohol and present findings from a recent study conducted in Chicago (USA). This study recruited a race- and age-diverse sample of lesbians and a demographically matched group of heterosexual women. Rates of "heavy" alcohol use and alcohol-use-related prob
