The Current Status of the 3Rs Principles in Animal Use in Bosnia and Herzegovina: Overview and Future Perspectives.

This paper presents a review of the legal and policy framework governing the use of animals in scientific procedures in Bosnia and Herzegovina, with a focus on the 3Rs (Replacement, Reduction, Refinement). National laws, subordinate regulations, official gazettes, and relevant policy documents were analysed alongside the selected scientific literature. The review describes the content of the legal framework, its points of convergence and divergence with Directive 2010/63/EU, and the institutional bodies that are legally foreseen but not yet fully operational. Implementation gaps identified in

Rethinking control strategies for plant-parasitic nematodes.

To improve management for plant-parasitic nematodes, new solutions must reflect biological realities and be guided by coherent, science-based regulations. This study addresses five areas: (1) regulatory and market hurdles that slow adaptation of biological control products despite strong safety records and scalable production; (2) microbiome-mediated soil resilience, including nematode-microbiome interactions, suppressive consortia, validated delivery systems, and diagnostics to shift soils toward durable suppression; (3) effective containment for nematodes of regulatory concern, and precise r

Leading the Way: Cellular and Gene Therapies in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Transforming Functional Outcomes Through Regenerative Innovation.

Regenerative rehabilitation combines rehabilitation science with regenerative medicine approaches to achieve synergistic and more effective outcomes. Within the field of regenerative medicine, there has been a growing number of cell and gene therapies (CGTs) that are either approved for clinical use or actively undergoing clinical trials. Many of these therapies-especially those targeting neurological and musculoskeletal disorders-use functional outcomes as primary or secondary endpoints, prompting discussion about how physical medicine and rehabilitation (PM&R) physicians can support the inte

Harnessing Machine Learning to Enhance UV-based Advanced Oxidation Processes for Sustainable Micropollutant Abatement.

Micropollutants represent growing risks to water quality and human health, necessitating solutions beyond conventional treatment. While ultraviolet-based advanced oxidation processes (UV-AOPs) effectively degrade those micropollutants, their implementation is complex because of difficulties in predicting treatment performance, deriving kinetic parameters, inferring reaction mechanisms, and optimizing energy-intensive operations. Recent advances in machine learning (ML) are providing novel, data-driven solutions to these long-standing challenges. This work provides an overview on the rapid prog

Implications of inflammasomes in dental pulp inflammation: immunopathology and therapeutic targeting.

OBJECTIVES: Pulpitis is a dynamic condition that affects vascular and immune responses. A major driver of inflammation is the inflammasome, which regulates interleukin-1 (IL-1) family cytokines and pyroptosis. Pathogen-associated molecular patterns (PAMPs) and damage-associated molecular patterns (DAMPs) activate the inflammasome via caspase recruitment, which is essential for the inflammasome's immunomodulatory effects. MATERIALS: In order to synthesize evidence for this review, a comprehensive search was conducted in PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science. Subsequently, preclinical models and c

A New Perspective on Clinical Scale Validation: Leveraging Sentence Embeddings for Pre-Validation Semantic Analysis.

Traditional clinical scale development is a lengthy and resource-intensive process, particularly during the empirical validation phase. This paper proposes a paradigm shift by introducing a computational pre-validation framework that leverages sentence embedding models to assess semantic properties of scale items prior to data collection. By transforming items into high-dimensional vector representations and analyzing their relationships within an MTMM-like structure, our method identifies potential item ambiguity, evaluates construct coherence, and tests discriminant validity at an early stag

The 2024 McDonald criteria for the diagnosis of multiple sclerosis: implications for clinical practice.

The 2024 revisions to the McDonald criteria mark a major shift in the diagnosis of multiple sclerosis (MS), reflecting advances in imaging and biomarker science. The updated framework adopts a more biologically anchored approach, integrating radiological and cerebrospinal fluid evidence to enable earlier and more accurate diagnosis. Key changes include recognition of the optic nerve as a fifth anatomical site for dissemination in space, incorporation of advanced MR imaging markers such as the central vein sign and paramagnetic rim lesions to improve specificity, and acceptance of the kappa fre

Controversy in Hypertension: Pro-Side of the Argument Using Artificial Intelligence for Hypertension Diagnosis and Management.

Hypertension presents the largest modifiable public health challenge due to its high prevalence, its intimate relationship to cardiovascular diseases, and its complex pathogenesis and pathophysiology. Low awareness of blood pressure elevation and suboptimal hypertension diagnosis serve as the major hurdles in effective hypertension management. Advances in artificial intelligence in hypertension have permitted the integrative analysis of large data sets including omics, clinical (with novel sensor and wearable technologies), health-related, social, behavioral, and environmental sources, and hol

Psychedelics and disorders of consciousness: the current landscape and the path forward.

Modern medicine has been shaken by the surge of psychedelic science that proposes a new approach to mitigate mental disorders, such as depression and post-traumatic stress disorder. Clinical trials to investigate whether psychedelic substances can treat psychiatric conditions are now underway, yet less discussion gravitates around their use in neurological disorders due to brain injury. One suggested implementation of brain-complexity enhancing psychedelics is to treat people with post-comatose disorders of consciousness (DoC). In this article, we discuss the rationale of this endeavour, exami
