HIV/AIDS and HBV co-infection with optimal control strategies and cost-effectiveness analyses using integer order model.

Hepatitis B virus (HBV) and HIV/AIDS co-infection is a common infectious disease that has been spreading through different nations in the world. The main objective of the study is to minimize the number of HBV and HIV co-infected individuals in the community and the cost incurred to the effort applied towards protection and treatment control strategies. In this study, a novel HBV and HIV/AIDS co-infection model has been formulated and analyzed to investigate the effects of protection and treatment control strategies on the spreading dynamics of the HBV and HIV/AIDS co-infection in the communit

Fracture-related infection in Open Long-bone Fractures: A Bicenter Case-control Study in a Limited Resource Country.

BACKGROUND: Fracture-related infections (FRI) are estimated to complicate approximately 1% of closed fractures and 30% of open fractures globally. These statistics, however, can vary significantly by region, with low-income and middle-income countries experiencing a disproportionately high burden. The studies in these regions are often underpowered to evaluate the local prevalence and contributing factors of FRI. The objectives of this study were (1) to assess the prevalence of FRI in open long-bone injuries and (2) investigate the association between FRI and various risk factors identified in

Seroepidemiology of Toxoplasma gondii infection among patients with beta-thalassemia major: a case-control study in Southeastern Iran.

BACKGROUND: Toxoplasmosis could potentially be transmitted via blood transfusions from asymptomatic donors to patients with beta-thalassemia major (BTM) who regularly receive transfusions. Nevertheless, screening for toxoplasmosis prior to blood donation has not been implemented, representing a significant gap in transfusion safety protocols. This study aimed to investigate the seroprevalence of anti-Toxoplasma gondii antibodies in BTM patients undergoing blood transfusion. METHODS: The current case-control study was conducted among 270 patients and 90 controls in Southeastern Iran, from Septe

Analysis of HIV/AIDS and HBV co-infection with drug-induced hepatotoxicity compartmental model with optimal control theory.

HIV/AIDS and Hepatitis B virus (HBV) co-infection poses a major public health threat, often complicated by drug-induced hepatotoxicity from antiretroviral therapy, a critical aspect overlooked in previous mathematical models. This study develops and analyzes a novel 12-compartment model to understand the co-dynamics of these diseases and treatment-related liver damage. We determined the model's equilibrium points and basic reproduction number and applied Optimal Control Theory to evaluate seven time-dependent interventions, including protection measures and treatments. Numerical simulations id

Enterobacter cloacae complex taxonomic incongruence may lead to misidentification of outbreaks and hinder infection control in real time.

The Enterobacter cloacae complex (ECC) are important nosocomial pathogens involved in hospital outbreaks. They present a significant challen … cal laboratories should report ECC isolates as such, without specifying the species. Alternatively, infection control teams need to be informed that all ECC isolates should be regarded as potentially related, regardless of their specific species designation.

Control of myeloid-derived suppressor cell dynamics potentiates vaccine protection in multiple mouse models of Trypanosoma cruzi infection.

To date, there is no licensed vaccine against the protozoan parasite Trypanosoma cruzi (T. cruzi), the etiological agent of Chagas Disease. T. cruzi has evolved numerous mechanisms to evade and manipulate the host immune system. Among the subversive strategies employed by the parasite, marked increases in CD11b+ Gr-1+ myeloid-derived suppressor cells (MDSCs) in several organs have been described. We have reported that CD11b+ Gr-1+ cells are involved not only during infection but also after immunization with a trans-sialidase fragment (TSf) adjuvanted with a cage-like particle adjuvant (ISPA).

A simple and sensitive test for Candida auris colonization, surveillance, and infection control suitable for near patient use.

UNLABELLED: Candida auris is a multidrug-resistant fungal pathogen with a propensity to colonize humans and persist on environmental surfaces. C. auris invasive fungal disease is being increasingly identified in acute and long-term care settings. We have developed a prototype cartridge-based C. auris surveillance assay (CaurisSurV cartridge; "research use only") that includes integrated sample processing and nucleic acid amplification to detect C. auris from surveillance skin swabs in the GeneXpert instrument and is designed for point-of-care use. The assay limit of detection (LoD) in the skin

Activation of the tick Toll pathway to control infection of Ixodes ricinus by the apicomplexan parasite Babesia microti.

The vector competence of blood-feeding arthropods is influenced by the interaction between pathogens and the immune system of the vector. The Toll and IMD (immune deficiency) signaling pathways play a key role in the regulation of innate immunity in both the Drosophila model and blood-feeding insects. However, in ticks (chelicerates), immune determination for pathogen acquisition and transmission has not yet been fully explored. Here, we have mapped homologs of insect Toll and IMD pathways in the European tick Ixodes ricinus, an important vector of human and animal diseases. We show that most
