High risks of HIV transmission for men who have sex with men--a comparison of risk factors of HIV infection among MSM associated with recruitment channels in 15 cities of China.

OBJECTIVE: While the HIV epidemic varies greatly by region and population group throughout China, the HIV incidence among men who have sex with men (MSM) continues to rise at an alarmingly fast pace. We seek to analyze the risk factors associated with HIV infection among MSM recruited from different channels in large urban centers across China, in an attempt to shed light on the design of future targeted intervention strategies. METHODS: A total of 33,684 MSM from 14 cities and one province were recruited from July to December 2011. Demographic (e.g. age, marital status, education) and behavi

Behavioral factors associated with artemisinin resistance: linking community treatment practices with pfkelch13 mutations in Northern Uganda.

BACKGROUND: Uganda is listed among the few African countries where artemisinin partial resistance has already emerged. It has been increasing there since 2017, providing a unique opportunity to track the dynamics of its spread. Although selection of artemisinin resistant parasites by sub-optimal dosing has been suggested in vitro, epidemiological evidence that community knowledge, attitudes, and practices (KAP) toward treatment seeking or adherence affect the spread of artemisinin resistance is lacking. METHODS: In 2023, we conducted active case detection of Plasmodium falciparum (Pf) malaria

Living With and Managing Uncomplicated Urinary Tract Infection: Mixed Methods Analysis of Patient Insights From Social Media.

BACKGROUND: Uncomplicated urinary tract infections (uUTIs) affect more than half of women in their lifetime and can impact on quality of life. We analyzed social media posts discussing uUTIs to gather insights into the patient experience, including aspects of their disease management journey and associated opinions and concerns. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to gather patient experience insights by analyzing social media posts that discussed uUTI. METHODS: A search string ("urinary tract infection" [UTI] or "bladder infection" or "cystitis" or "UTI" not "interstitial cystitis") was used to iden

Economic Abuse and Care-seeking Practices for HIV and Financial Support Services in Women Employed by Sex Work: A Cross-Sectional Baseline Assessment of a Clinical Trial Cohort in Uganda.

Economic hardship is a driver of entry into sex work, which is associated with high HIV risk. Yet, little is known about economic abuse in women employed by sex work (WESW) and its relationship to uptake of HIV prevention and financial support services. This study used cross-sectional baseline data from a multisite, longitudinal clinical trial that tests the efficacy of adding economic empowerment to traditional HIV risk reduction education on HIV incidence in 542 WESW. Mixed effects logistic and linear regressions were used to examine associations in reported economic abuse by demographic cha

What do the general public believe about the causes, prognosis and best management strategies for low back pain? A cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Low back pain (LBP) is one of the most common reasons for seeking health care and is costly to the health care system. Recent evidence has shown that LBP care provided by many providers is divergent from guidelines and one reason may be patient's beliefs and expectations about treatment. Thus, examining the nature of patient beliefs and expectations regarding low back pain treatment will help coordinate efforts to improve consistency and quality of care. METHODS: This study was a cross-sectional population-based survey of adults living in Newfoundland, Canada. The survey included

A gendered analysis of living with HIV/AIDS in the Eastern Region of Ghana.

BACKGROUND: A gender gap exists in knowledge regarding persons living with HIV/AIDS in Ghana. Women living with HIV/AIDS (WLHIV) greatly outnumber males living with HIV/AIDS (MLHIV) in Ghana and Sub-Saharan Africa generally. This necessitates more gender-nuanced evidence-based information on HIV/AIDS to guide individuals, healthcare workers, and other stakeholders in Ghana particularly. This paper undertook a gender-focused analysis of the experiences of WLHIV and MLHIV in a municipal area in Ghana which has been most impacted by HIV/AIDS. METHODS: In-depth interviews of 38 HIV-positive perso

The Counter-Regulatory Renin-Angiotensin System: A Surprising Ally in the Field of COVID-19.

INTRODUCTION: Over the past four years, SARS-CoV-2 and COVID-19 have become global health crises, spurring extensive research on virus behavior, complications, and treatments. The virus interacts with a component of the renin-angiotensin system (RAS), altering inflammatory, hypertrophic, and hemodynamic responses via binding to ACE2 found in organs like the heart, lungs, and kidneys. OBJECTIVE: This review explores the RAS-COVID-19 interplay, focusing on key molecules like ACE2, Ang-(1-7), and Ang-(1-9), influencing susceptibility, severity, and treatments. It seeks to clarify ACE2's dual rol

Characteristics and context of fentanyl test strip use among syringe service clients in southern Wisconsin.

BACKGROUND: Fentanyl adulteration of illicit drugs is a major driver of opioid-involved overdose in the USA. Fentanyl test strips are increasingly used by people who use drugs to check for fentanyl. However, little is known about factors that influence test strip use in this population. METHODS: In this mixed-methods study employing semi-structured open-ended interviews (n = 29) and a structured survey (n = 341), we examined characteristics associated with test strip use, characteristics of test strip use, and situational, logistical and psychosocial factors influencing test strip use. The social production of substance abuse and HIV/HCV risk: an exploratory study of opioid-using immigrants from the former Soviet Union living in New York City.

BACKGROUND: Several former Soviet countries have witnessed the rapid emergence of major epidemics of injection drug use (IDU) and associated HIV/HCV, suggesting that immigrants from the former Soviet Union (FSU) may be at heightened risk for similar problems. This exploratory study examines substance use patterns among the understudied population of opioid-using FSU immigrants in the U.S., as well as social contextual factors that may increase these immigrants' susceptibility to opioid abuse and HIV/HCV infection. METHODS: In-depth interviews were conducted with 10 FSU immigrants living in Ne

Prenatal Tobacco and Alcohol Exposure and Cortical Change Among Youths.

IMPORTANCE: The associations of prenatal alcohol exposure (PAE) and prenatal tobacco exposure (PTE) with adolescent neuroanatomical development are typically evaluated cross-sectionally. It is unclear whether observed effects persist throughout life or reflect different developmental trajectories. OBJECTIVE: To examine whether PAE and PTE are associated with early-adolescent cortical structure and development. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This cohort study included children aged 9 to 12 years who participated in the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development (ABCD) Study's first 2 neuroima

Analysis of influencing factors of parents' job stress of preschool children with mental retardation based on preference score matching.

BACKGROUND: Intellectual disability (ID), affecting 1%-3% of children globally, presents significant challenges for parents that often translate into occupational stress. While studies document elevated parenting stress levels (33.57 vs 26.46 in controls), job-related impacts remain poorly understood. This study employs propensity score matching (PSM) to rigorously analyze work stress determinants among parents of preschool-aged children with ID, controlling for socioeconomic and behavioral confounders. The research bridges a critical gap by examining how workplace demands intersect with speci

Momentary Influences on Self-Regulation in Two Populations With Health Risk Behaviors: Adults Who Smoke and Adults Who Are Overweight and Have Binge-Eating Disorder.

INTRODUCTION: Self-regulation has been implicated in health risk behaviors and is a target of many health behavior interventions. Despite most prior research focusing on self-regulation as an individual-level trait, we hypothesize that self-regulation is a time-varying mechanism of health and risk behavior that may be influenced by momentary contexts to a substantial degree. Because most health behaviors (e.g., eating, drinking, smoking) occur in the context of everyday activities, digital technologies may help us better understand and influence these behaviors in real time. Using a momentary

Demographic factors and correlates of trust in types of people and information sources: findings from the SAM-KAP Alabama youth survey on HIV prevention.

BACKGROUND: Sexual and gender minority adolescents (SGM) experience higher rates of discrimination than heterosexual and cisgender peers, which may lead to adverse health behaviors, including condomless sex. Experienced discrimination and stigmatization may lead SGM adolescents to disproportionately seek information online around HIV risk and prevention. Understanding trusted sources of information among SGM adolescents is critical to addressing the HIV epidemic. METHODS: Two hundred six SGM adolescents, with male sex assigned at birth, aged 14-17 years, were recruited in-person from an LGBTQ

Exploring the drivers of suicide among individuals served by a medical university in Southeastern Iran: a qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: Suicide remains a leading cause of death worldwide and a critical global public health concern. Although the majority of suicides occur in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), prevention in these contexts is often hampered by limited mental health infrastructure, entrenched stigma, and systemic barriers. In Iran, although the national suicide mortality rate remains comparatively low, a growing trend in suicide attempts—especially among youth—has raised concern. However, little is known about the sociocultural and structural drivers of suicidal behavior in underserved regions s

Beyond RECIST: rethinking endpoints and biomarkers for educative cancer therapy.

Non-cytotoxic cancer therapies increasingly seek to control malignant systems rather than maximize tumor-cell killing. Educative strategies aim to impose or restore less harmful states such as dormancy, differentiation, tumor microenvironment normalization or reduced invasion. Pressure-dependent evolutionary containment is a related control strategy, not evidence of durable reprogramming by itself. The limitations of size-based assessment are already well established: Choi, PERCIST, mRECIST, Lugano and iRECIST each operationalized a disease-specific alternative. This review's contribution is t
