Historical Perspective and Medical Maladies of Alexander the Great.

Alexander the Great (356 BC - 323 BC) was only 20 years old when he was named the next King of Macedonia after his father was assassinated. The following 11 years witnessed the evolution of an outstanding leader who expanded his empire from Egypt to the Indian frontier. Despite successfully conquering much of the world, he was afflicted with a febrile illness at the age of 32, which he battled for a mere 11 days before perishing. It has been almost 2,400 years since his death, but the exact cause remains a mystery. Did he die of natural causes or at the hands of conspirators? Numerous papers h

Impact of interdisciplinary education on pharmacy student knowledge and comfort with counseling on drug-nutrient interactions.

INTRODUCTION: Drug-nutrient interactions (DNIs) can negatively impact the medication use process and cause patient harm. Education in basic nutrition is often not included within pharmacy school curricula despite pharmacists needing to be proficient in identifying sources of potentially interacting nutrients. We evaluated the impact of an online education module about common DNIs and their sources on fourth-year student pharmacist knowledge, comfort with counseling, and perceived importance of DNIs. METHODS: Fourth-year pharmacy students participating in their first community pharmacy advance

An integrated database on ticks and tick-borne zoonoses in the tropics and subtropics with special reference to developing and emerging countries.

Tick-borne zoonoses (TBZ) are emerging diseases worldwide. A large amount of information (e.g. case reports, results of epidemiological surveillance, etc.) is dispersed through various reference sources (ISI and non-ISI journals, conference proceedings, technical reports, etc.). An integrated database-derived from the ICTTD-3 project ( http://www.icttd.nl )-was developed in order to gather TBZ records in the (sub-)tropics, collected both by the authors and collaborators worldwide. A dedicated website ( http://www.tickbornezoonoses.org ) was created to promote collaboration and circulate inform

Studies of avoidable factors influencing death: a call for explicit criteria.

OBJECTIVE: To analyse studies evaluating cases of potentially "avoidable" death. DESIGN: The definitions, sources of information, and methods were reviewed with a structured protocol. The different types of avoidable factors,--that is, deficiencies in medical care that may have contributed to death--were categorised. The presence of explicit classifications and standards was examined. basic criteria for quality of the studies were defined and the numbers of studies fulfilling these criteria were assessed. SETTING AND PARTICIPANTS: 65 studies, published during 1988-93 in peer reviewed medical

Brain substrates of perceived spatial separation between speech sources under simulated reverberant listening conditions in schizophrenia.

BACKGROUND: People with schizophrenia recognize speech poorly under multiple-people-talking (informational masking) conditions. In reverberant environments, direct-wave signals from a speech source are perceptually integrated with the source reflections (the precedence effect), forming perceived spatial separation (PSS) between different sources and consequently improving target-speech recognition against informational masking. However, the brain substrates underlying the schizophrenia-related vulnerability to informational masking and whether schizophrenia affects the unmasking effect of PSS

Safety Evaluation of Reinforced Concrete Structures Using Multi-Source Fusion Uncertainty Cloud Inference and Experimental Study.

Structural damage detection and safety evaluations have emerged as a core driving force in structural health monitoring (SHM). Focusing on the multi-source monitoring data in sensing systems and the uncertainty caused by initial defects and monitoring errors, in this study, we develop a comprehensive method for evaluating structural safety, named multi-source fusion uncertainty cloud inference (MFUCI), that focuses on characterizing the relationship between condition indexes and structural performance in order to quantify the structural health status. Firstly, based on cloud theory, the cloud
