We investigated the significance of intravenous injection of indocyanine green during laparoscopic examination in chronic hepatitis. The presence or absence of bridging fibrosis was estimated during laparoscopy from the pattern of lobular markings before and after indocyanine green coloration. Laparoscopy without indocyanine green predicted the presence of bridging fibrosis in biopsy specimens with a low sensitivity of 0.42 (specificity, 0.8). The purpose of the present study was to examine the protective action of a 7.5% hypertonic NaCl solution (HS) on the circulatory shock produced by compound 48/80 (48/80) in rats and to determine the effect of the AV3V lesion on the protective action of HS. Our speciality commonly traces its origin to a demonstration of the inhalation of ether by a patient undergoing surgery in Boston in 1846. Less well known is the demonstration of the i.v. injection of opium with alcohol into a dog in Oxford in 1656, leading to anaesthesia followed by full long-term recovery. Bioavailability of drugs following intramuscular injection is reviewed, with particular emphasis on diazepam, chlordiazepoxide, phenytoin, digoxin and lidocaine. Clinical experience with these drugs has shown that i.m. absorption may be slow, erratic or incomplete. Factors which play a role in the bioavailability of i.m. medications include the water solubility of the drug, dispersion of the injected solution and blood flow at the muscle site. For many drugs, intravenous injection is the parenteral route of choice, and oral administration may be more efficacious than i.m. injection.

Toxic shock syndrome toxin 1 (TSST-1) was purified to apparent homogeneity by chromatofocusing and affinity chromatography. The amino acid composition of the toxin was very similar to that reported for TSST-1 by other investigators. The amino-terminal amino acid was serine. A partial specific volume of 0.73 ml/g was calculated for the toxin from the amino acid data, and a molecular weight of 19,200 +/- 1,300 was determined by hydrodynamic methods. Intracerebroventricular injections of nicardipine (10 micrograms/kg) to SHR induced hypotension which was suppressed by pretreatment with 6-OHDA. This hypotension was also inhibited by a previous injection of naloxone (100 micrograms/kg i.c.v.) whereas the hypotension induced by intravenously injected nicardipine (10 micrograms/kg) was not changed. It is suggested that the release of endogenous opioids is involved in the sympatho-inhibitory effect of centrally administered dihydropyridine calcium channel antagonists.

Hepatitis C virus infection is a major health problem worldwide. The current study estimated seroprevalence of Hepatitis C virus (HCV) and evaluated associated factors among volunteer blood donors of the Northwest Frontier Province (NWFP), Pakistan.
