Densities of 10, 20, and 30 hard red winter wheat kernels, Triticum aestivum L., were infested with different life stages of the rice weevil, Sitophilus oryzae (L.), mixed with 35 g of wheat treated with 300 ppm of the Protect-It (Mississauga, Ontario, Canada) formulation of diatomaceous earth (DE), and held at 22, 27, and 32 degrees C. A similar test was conducted by exposing densities of 6, 12, and 18 corn kernels infested with different life stages of the maize weevil, Sitophilus zeamais Motschulsky, mixed with 30 g of corn, Zea mays L., treated with 300 ppm of DE. Mortality of adults emerg

Outbreaks of Dengue/Dengue Haemorrhagic Fever have been occurring in the National Capital Territory (NCT) Delhi from time to time. A massive outbreak of Dengue/DHF causing considerable mortality occurred in 1996 in the NCT, Delhi. Since this outbreak regular entomological surveillance has been instituted, for timely preventive action against Dengue/DHF. The Central Cross Checking Organisation (CCO) of the National Malaria Eradication Programme cross-checks Aedes surveillance activities in Delhi. In this paper we present our experiences in entomological surveillance in relation Dengue, to share

For more than 100 years, tick fever and the cattle tick have caused tremendous financial loss to cattle producers around the world. Since Australia became infected with the disease and infested with its tick vector in the mid-19th century, a great deal of research effort has been directed towards their effective control by Australian farmers, administrators and scientists. Such research has yielded information which has facilitated the development of various control strategies that have equal application in other countries afflicted with the same problem. It has been demonstrated that integrat

Vector control and the detection (followed by treatment) of infected individuals are the two methods currently available for the control of sleeping sickness. The basic reproduction rate of a compartmental model is used to analyse and compare the two strategies. The efficiency of each strategy will depend on two epidemiologic parameters; the intrinsic contamination rate Q (closely related to the index of new contaminations) that captures the potential spread of the disease, and the intrinsic removal rate from the first stage (intrinsic to the particular trypanosome strain and to the population

In general, leishmaniasis is more or less a problem not only in Saudi Arabia but also in all countries of the Eastern Mediterranean Region. In Saudi Arabia, the most important form is zoonotic cutaneous leishmaniasis (ZCI.). It's main vector, Phlebotomus papatasi has been reported and incriminated by many authors. In this paper, the diagnostic morphology of P. papatasi as compared to other species found in Riyadh as well as the immature stages was given. This is considered as a base line data for studying the ecology and biology of P. papatasi. No doubt the best control strategy is based on co

A patient is reported who was bitten by Aedes albopictus, commonly known as tiger mosquito. The biology of the insect, originally living in the forests of southeastern Asia, and its role in transmitting exotic infectious agents is discussed. Up to this day, only Albania and northern Italy have been colonized, but the biologic characteristics of the insect make its spreading all over Europe highly probable, unless serious attempts to eradicate it are quickly undertaken. Dermatologists should think of the tiger mosquito in the presence of painful, purpuric, large wheals and when patients report

The larval susceptibility to Bacillus sphaericus strain 2362 of the non-man-biting mosquito Culex cinereus and the urban filariasis vector Culex quinquefasciatus, two competitor mosquitoes in polluted habitats, was compared. In the laboratory, both species ingested a similar amount of B. sphaericus spores when fed c. 2 x 10(5) spores per ml for 30 min. However, in the same experiment, third-instar larvae of Cx quinquefasciatus were reduced by 98% at 24 h exposure while Cx cinereus larvae were only reduced by 6% at 72 h. In the field, preimaginal populations of Cx cinereus ingested, within a we

The purpose of this paper is to bring together all the available information concerning the control of Simulium vectors of onchocerciasis in Africa and Central and South America. Some of the larger control schemes are described in detail. Insecticidal formulations, rates of dosage, and methods of application are given when available, and costs per square mile (or square kilometre) are quoted where possible as a guide to future operations. The efficacy of ground application (larviciding) as compared with aerial application (larviciding and adulticiding) is discussed and it is concluded that groun

In 2022, the non-native longhorn beetle Anoplophora horsfieldii (Hope) was officially reported on Jeju Island, Korea, marking its first confirmed occurrence outside its native range. This insect damages living hackberry trees, a common species in Korea, posing a significant threat to tree health due to its high population levels on Jeju Island. This study aimed to estimate the climatic suitability and spread potential of A. horsfieldii to support its effective management in non-native regions, particularly on Jeju Island. We adopted a species distribution modeling (SDM) approach using global p

BACKGROUND: Tsetse control is considered an effective and sustainable tactic for the control of cyclically transmitted trypanosomosis in the absence of effective vaccines and inexpensive, effective drugs. The sterile insect technique (SIT) is currently used to eliminate tsetse fly populations in an area-wide integrated pest management (AW-IPM) context in Senegal. For SIT, tsetse mass rearing is a major milestone that associated microbes can influence. Tsetse flies can be infected with microorganisms, including the primary and obligate Wigglesworthia glossinidia, the commensal Sodalis glossinid

Yeasts from all immature life stages of Mexican fruit fly Anastrepha ludens (Loew) (Diptera: Tephritidae) from diet, insectary air, and rearing materials were isolated, identified and evaluated for pathogenicity. Fifteen species of yeasts with one to genus level were identified from 72 yeast cultures obtained. Zygosaccharomyces bailii was the only yeast found to be highly pathogenic to Mexican fruit fly. Seventy-two hours post inoculation, the diet in bioassay cups with Z. bailii consistently showed signs of fermentation with gas bubbling causing the migration of larvae to the walls and lids o

Aedes aegypti is a vector of medically important viruses including those causing Zika, dengue, and chikungunya. During mating, males transfer a number of proteins and other molecules to the female and these components of the male ejaculate are essential in shifting female post-mating behaviors in a number of insect species. Because these molecules are highly variable by species, and female post-mating behavior by species is also varied, behavioral assays testing the function of the ejaculate are necessary before we can develop control strategies targeting the mating system to reduce mosquito p

Aenasius bambawalei Hayat (Encyrtidae: Hymenoptera) has been synonymized with Aenasius arizonensis (Girault) is a small, newly discovered endoparasitoid of the cotton mealybug Phenacoccuss solenopsis Tinsley (Pseudococcidae: Hemiptera), which completes its life cycle inside the body of its host and it is a potential insect control tool. Despite the acquired knowledge regarding host-parasitoid interaction, little information is available on the factors of parasitoid origin able to modulate mealybug physiology. The components of A. arizonensis venom have not been well studied but venom from othe…

An innovative approach to ticks and insect pests management is necessary to mitigate the challenges posed by the indiscriminate use of chemical pesticides, which can lead to resistance development and environmental pollution. Despite their great potential, biological control agents have significant manufacturing, application, and stability limitations. Currently, using phytochemicals, biosynthesized nanoparticles, and bioagents to get rid of arthropods might be a good alternative that would make farmers less worried about residues and resistance. The present investigation was carried out to de
