Autogenerating a Domain-Specific Question-Answering Data Set to Enable High-Performing Language Models for Magnetic Materials.

Domain-specific language models are attractive because they can be tailored to suit their users. However, the high-end computational resources needed to pretrain large language models (LLMs) by conventional methods tend to prohibit their development. Furthermore, there is a dearth of large, domain-specific, question-answering (QA) data sets to finetune LLMs for prompt engineering, even when computational resources can be found to pretrain LLMs. Our paper presents a method for autogenerating a data set of 168,080 domain-specific QA pairs relating to magnetic materials. We show how this can be e…

Sensory context improves language prediction in humans and LLMs.

Language is a fundamental human capacity. Large language models (LLMs) have presented the first viable model of language outside of humans, yet how these models learn and use language differs significantly from humans. Here, we compare LLMs and humans predicting language with varying levels of sensory information-from disembodied written text to audiovisual videos of speakers-to demonstrate that, in both humans and LLMs, sensory context is critical for optimal performance. We asked human participants to predict upcoming words within narratives presented as either audiovisual, audio-only, or wr…

Ensemble multi-retrieval methodologies with reasoning model decision in multi-step biomedical QA.

Robust and trustworthy biomedical question answering (QA) remains a critical challenge for large language models (LLMs), especially in complex domains such as rare diseases, where information is fragmented across multiple sources. MedHopQA 2025 benchmark introduces 10 000 multi-step reasoning questions curated from Wikipedia, requiring systems to extract, connect, and synthesize biomedical knowledge across interlinked documents. In this work, we present a retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) and decision-making framework that integrates diverse retrieval strategies, including Query2Doc-based, …

Real-time hallucination detection and intervention in medical LLMs via calibrated hidden-state probes.

OBJECTIVE: Most hallucination mitigation for large language models (LLMs) operates post-hoc, leaving safety-critical clinical deployment without real-time warning capability. We present a calibrated hidden-state probing pipeline that enables token-time hallucination detection under explicit false-positive-rate (FPR) constraints, making it suitable for streaming clinical deployment. METHODS: We formulate token-time hallucination detection as a constrained sequential decision problem separating non-circular supervision construction (using ROUGE-L, exact-choice, and exploratory NLI verifiers), F…

Quantifying noise complaint intensity via multi-LLM and revealing vertical greenery mitigation thresholds.

Urban noise pollution has become a critical environmental issue affecting residents' quality of life. Existing research struggles to capture heterogeneity in noise sensitivity across different populations and cannot precisely quantify the mitigation effects of green space on noise. First, this study proposes an LLM-based method to quantify noise complaint intensity. Using four large language models, we constructed a benchmark dataset of noise complaint intensity. By replacing direct scoring tasks (where LLMs underperform) with comparison tasks (where LLMs excel), the fine-tuned RoBERTa model (…

LLM-Generated Lay-Language Protocols for Molecular Tumor Board Patients: Evaluation of Quality and Clinical Usability.

BACKGROUND: Molecular Tumor Boards (MTBs) generate highly technical recommendations. The language used in their protocols is rarely accessible to patients. Lay-language patient protocols could support patient-clinician communication, yet manual production is difficult to sustain in high-volume oncology settings. Large language models (LLMs) may offer scalable drafting assistance, yet clinical usability remains largely uninvestigated under real-world deployment constraints. Existing evaluations rely predominantly on synthetic data or closed-source models that are incompatible with strict data p…

Illusion of competence: vision-language models provide confident but inaccurate explanations in cytological diagnostics.

Large vision-language models (LVLMs) have shown impressive image-understanding capabilities across domains. However, their suitability for cytomorphological diagnostics remains unclear. Here, we systematically evaluated four state-of-the-art generalist LVLMs, GPT-4o, Gemini-2.0, Llama-3.2, and DeepSeek-VL2, and three biomedical LVLMs, LLaVA-Med, CONCH, and BiomedCLIP, across key cytomorphology benchmarks, including peripheral blood cell classification, morphology assessment, bone marrow cell classification, and cervical smear malignancy detection. Performance was assessed under zero-shot, few-

The error theory of LLM consciousness: there is no evidence that standard LLMs are conscious.

Are chatbots AI zombies or conscious minds? I suspect they are AI zombies, at least when implemented on today's standard hardware. I argue that today's Large Language Mode's (LLM's) consciousness-like behaviors do not suggest they are conscious, because there is an error theory - a theory explaining why they behave as if they are conscious in absence of actual felt experience. LLMs function as "crowdsourced neocortices" - as they scale up, they come to mirror human conceptual structures, leading to human-like behaviors, including those involving consciousness. By contrast, bio-computers, quant

AI-generated language remains systematically distinguishable from human communication.

Large language models (LLMs) are increasingly used in the social sciences to simulate human behavior and communication, yet validation methods for these applications remain limited. Existing evaluations often rely on human judgments of plausibility, a coarse, difficult-to-scale, and often unreliable benchmark for distinguishing AI-generated from human text. As a result, researchers lack robust tools for assessing the realism of LLM-generated language and for calibrating models to real-world data. We address this gap in two ways. First, we introduce the Conversational Human Authenticity Test (C…

What is AI? An introduction for clinicians.

BACKGROUND: Artificial intelligence (AI) is thought by many to likely underpin the next revolution in clinical medicine. The rapidly evolving terminology in AI - including terms such as 'generative AI', 'machine learning' and 'natural language processing' - can present a barrier to clinical adoption. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this article is to give a non-technical overview of AI and its medical applications, with particular emphasis on large language models. DISCUSSION: The term 'AI' suggests semantic understanding. This impression is reinforced by text output eerily similar to human writing. H…

Benchmarking Prompting Strategies for Open-Source Language Models in ICHD-3 Headache Classification.

We benchmarked five open-source LLMs (12-24B parameters) on ICHD-3 headache classification using 305 synthetic vignettes from the HeadAI dataset. Five standard prompting techniques achieved 56-61% top-1 accuracy with no significant pairwise differences. A three-tier oracle ablation that progressively provided the correct diagnosis reached 81-94%, revealing a 36-percentage-point gap attributable to retrieval quality. When the retriever placed the correct diagnosis at rank 1 (Hit@1 = 23%), accuracy reached 94.9%. The gap decomposed into retrieval quality (∼24 pp), noise (∼6 pp), and intra-catego

The 42 problem in AI-assisted research.

Large language models are very good at providing concise answers. But if we only see the answer without knowing the original question or the context behind it, that answer may not be very useful. The important issue is not simply how much information an AI summary removes but whether we can still recover the missing context. Thus, AI literature tools should also report how much information was removed and how recoverable their omissions are.

Fine-tuning and structured prompting strategies for question answering over full-text biomedical research articles.

OBJECTIVES: The ability of large language models (LLMs) to answer targeted scientific questions by synthesizing information from research articles remains an open research challenge. METHODS: We evaluated the effects of fine-tuning and a question-specific prompting strategy to answer 16 pre-defined questions about HIV drug resistance studies, including whether viral genetic sequences were reported and the demographics and antiviral treatments of the individuals from whom sequences were obtained. For fine-tuning, we constructed an instruction set comprising 250 HIV drug resistance studies, wit…

MedHopQA: a disease-centred multi-hop reasoning benchmark and evaluation framework for LLM-based biomedical question answering.

Evaluating large language models (LLMs) in the biomedical domain requires benchmarks that can distinguish genuine reasoning from pattern matching and that remain discriminative as model capabilities improve. Existing biomedical question answering (QA) benchmarks are limited in this respect: multiple-choice formats allow models to succeed by answer elimination rather than inference, and widely circulated exam-style datasets are subject to performance saturation and training data contamination. Multi-hop reasoning, i.e. the ability to integrate information across multiple sources to derive an an…

MAS4SysML: A Multi-Agent Framework for SysML v2 Model Generation from Natural Language.

Automatically generating accurate SysML models from natural-language requirements can substantially accelerate the adoption of Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) in complex system development. However, using large language models (LLMs) to generate model code often fails to meet the strict syntactic constraints of formal modeling languages, and consistently ensuring semantic alignment between generated models and requirements remains challenging. To address these challenges, this paper presents MAS4SysML, a multi-agent collaborative framework for SysML v2 code generation that improves synt…

Communication, Embodiment, and Coordination in an El Farol Bar-Inspired LLM Society.

We study the social dynamics of Large Language Model (LLM) agents in a spatial environment with a bar, inspired by the El Farol Bar problem. In contrast to the classical formulation, our model reintroduces local communication, embodied movement, and temporal delay: agents interact only with nearby others, must physically move to enter or leave the bar, and cannot immediately realize intended actions. Across 10 independent simulations, the system consistently regulated occupancy near the 60% crowding threshold, typically settling slightly above it. This collective pattern emerged not from expli

Adaptive Data Splitting Strategy to Enhance Knowledge Learning for Phosphorescence Lifetime Prediction.

Room-temperature phosphorescence (RTP) lifetime is a critical property for optoelectronic and bioimaging applications, yet its experimental measurement is labor-intensive and datasets remain scarce. Herein, we construct RTPLD, a curated dataset of 681 RTP molecules collected from extensive literature with the assistance of large language models (LLMs), providing a standardized foundation for data-driven modeling of RTP systems. To enable reliable learning from this limited but chemically diverse dataset, we propose DMFsplit, an adaptive data splitting strategy that integrates the global molecu…
