Combining different metal artifact reduction levels with sharpening filters and slice thickness for the visualization of mandibular canals perforated by implants.

OBJECTIVES: To investigate the influence of combining levels of metal artifact reduction (MAR) tool with different filters and slice-thickness in the detection of mandibular canals perforated by implants on CBCT scans and to objectively assess the impact of the aforementioned combinations. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Implants were placed above (8 implants) and inside (10 implants) mandibular canals of dried-mandibles. CBCT scans were obtained with the Eagle 3D unit (85 kVp, 8 mA, 5 × 5 cm FOV, 130 μm voxel size, and off/medium/high MAR levels). Examiners evaluated the scans under each MAR level an

Descriptions of the dynamic joint space of the temporomandibular joint.

BACKGROUND: Clinical diagnosis and treatment depended heavily on the motion analysis of the human joints. Although the dynamic joint space (DJS) of other organs was widely used in academic investigations, they were not universally used in the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) field, which was also important for the motion evaluation of the TMJ. The objectives of this study are to introduce the DJS of the TMJ and characterize the DJS regulars of mandibular movements. METHODS: Ten asymptomatic subjects were selected to instruct this application. The mouth opening and closing, mandibular protrusion,

Mechanism of transverse fracture of the skull base caused by blunt force to the mandible.

Transverse fracture of the skull base is common both in the crushing of temporal regions of the skull and in the case of force acting on one temporal region. However, the mechanism of transverse skull base fracture caused by maxillofacial force has not been fully clarified. To provide an injury identification basis for forensic pathologists and clinicians, this paper combines accident reconstruction and finite element analysis methods to study the injury mechanism of an incomplete transverse fracture of skull base after the injured individual's mandible was subjected to violence in a traffic a

Mandibular arteriovenous malformation in pregnancy.

Benign vascular lesions, such as hemangiomas of childhood, arteriovenous malformations (AVMs) and venous malformations, are uncommon and have been found in a variety of organs throughout the body. Vascular lesions of bone are found most often in the vertebral column. Vascular tumors of the mandible are rare. We report a case of a mandibular AVM found in a pregnant woman at 35 weeks' gestation. A pregnant woman presented at 35 weeks' gestation with right-sided jaw pain and was found to have a pulsatile mass on the internal surface of the right mandible in the area of the premolars. Orthodontic treatment of adult occlusal traumatic periodontitis using a twin block appliance: a case report.

Malocclusion may lead to the development of occlusal trauma, which can exacerbate periodontal disease. Here, we present a skeletal Class II adult patient with occlusal traumatic periodontitis of upper incisors, who was treated with a two-phased orthodontic treatment. In the first phase, a Twin Block appliance (TBA) was used to increase the vertical dimension of the posterior teeth, to eliminate the anterior occlusal trauma. In addition, TBA also improved mandibular retrusion by forwarding the mandible. In the second phase of fixed orthodontics, occlusion was fine-tuned with infrazygomatic cres

Association between craniofacial asymmetry and unilateral temporomandibular joint sounds in adult patients using 3D-computed tomography.

OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study was to investigate the possible relationship between unilateral temporomandibular joint (TMJ) sounds and craniofacial asymmetry, using 3D-computed tomography (CT) measurements. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: Forty-one reconstructed 3D-CT models of adult subjects were measured to analyze craniofacial asymmetry. Subjects were divided into two groups depending on the presence (n = 20) or absence (n = 21) of unilateral joint sounds, and the results compared using the Mann-Whitney U-test. To investigate the association between these parameters, the Pearson correlation

Ewing sarcoma of the mandible in a child-reconstruction using a chondrocostal graft.

Ewing sarcoma is a rare malignant bone tumour that predominantly affects long and flat bones; mandibular involvement is exceptional. We report the case of a 14-year-old boy presenting with a firm, painless right cheek mass that progressively enlarged over 7 months. Clinical examination revealed a mass extending ~9 cm intraorally. The patient underwent surgical excision via vestibular hemimandibulectomy, followed by immediate reconstruction using a chondrocostal graft fixed to a titanium plate, alongside neoadjuvant and adjuvant chemotherapy. Histopathological and immunohistochemical analyses c

Treatment of zygomatic fractures: a follow-up study of 105 patients.

One hundred and five patients with zygomatic fractures are presented. The main cause of the fracture was violence, followed by traffic accidents, fall and sport. In more than 25% of the cases, the fractures were accompanied by another fracture of the facial skeleton, viz maxillary, mandibular and nasal fractures. In severe cases of traffic accidents there were associated fractures in more than half of the cases. The follow-up study showed visible asymmetry of the face in 17 patients and sensory disturbances in 37 patients. We did not find the X-ray subdivision by Knight & North useful in the e

Early findings of morphological changes in the temporomandibular joint after orthognathic surgery in mandibular prognathism with facial asymmetry.

This study was performed to investigate early morphological changes in the temporomandibular joint (TMJ), after patients with mandibular prognathism with facial asymmetry (MPA) received orthognathic surgery. The morphological changes in the TMJ were analyzed on computed tomography multi-sectional reconstructed images first taken before preoperative orthodontic treatment and then again 6 months after orthognathic surgery, in 39 patients with MPA. A combination of Le Fort I osteotomy and bilateral sagittal split osteotomy (BSSO) was performed in 22 patients and BSSO alone was performed in 17 pat

Computed Tomography Analysis of Craniofacial Features in Japanese Patients With Cleidocranial Dysplasia.

Cleidocranial dysplasia is a congenital malformation syndrome characterized by skeletal and dental abnormalities as well as distinctive craniofacial features. Most previous reports have relied on two-dimensional radiographs, and no comprehensive three-dimensional investigations have been conducted. This study aimed to provide a detailed overview of craniofacial features in patients with cleidocranial dysplasia using computed tomography. Craniofacial characteristics of 11 Japanese patients were assessed using three-dimensional computed tomography reconstructions. Qualitative evaluations were pe
