OBJECTIVE: Antithyroid drugs such as propylthiouracil (PTU) and methimazole (MMI) are common medications in Chinese patients with hyperthyroidism and PTU-induced antineutrophil cytoplasmic antibody (ANCA) positive vasculitis has been reported. Here we report three cases of hyperthyroid Graves' disease that occurred after partial thyroidectomy for papillary carcinoma. In Case 1, the patient first developed hyperthyroidism 2 years after resection of left thyroid lobe, was treated for 2 years with antithyroid drug which was then discontinued, and relapsed with periodic paralysis after 8 years of remission. Clinical evaluation was conducted to ascertain whether thyrotropin receptor antibody (TRAb) in the normal range may still be involved in the regulation of thyroid function after prolonged treatment for Graves' disease. All patients (n = 33) were treated with antithyroid drugs for an average of 10.6 years and were under euthyroid conditions in which normal blood levels of tri-iodothyronine (T3) were significantly correlated with blood thyrotropin (TSH) levels, but not with titers of TRAb. A significant correlation was observed between TRAb titer and thyroid-stimulating antibody (TSAb) activity.

We report here a case of a paediatric hyperthyroidism due to a micro-macro-follicular thyroid adenoma in the presence of heterozygous point mutation of TSH receptor (TSHr). We describe the case from the initial diagnosis, through laboratoristic examinations and imaging techniques, until the radical surgical treatment made by a mini-cervicotomic videoassisted technique. Interleukin-2 is a lymphokine which is believed to play a central role in the regulation of the immune response. In 28 patients with Graves' disease showing a wide range of thyroid function between the extremes of hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism, the following parameters of peripheral thyroid function were measured: serum thyroxine concentration, serum-free thyroxine concentration, serum triiodothyronine concentration, and serum-free triiodothyronine concentration.
