Exploring the importance of predisposing, enabling, and need factors for promoting Veteran engagement in mental health therapy for post-traumatic stress: a multiple methods study.

PURPOSE: This study explored Veteran and family member perspectives on factors that drive post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) therapy engagement within constructs of the Andersen model of behavioral health service utilization. Despite efforts by the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) to increase mental health care access, the proportion of Veterans with PTSD who engage in PTSD therapy remains low. Support for therapy from family members and friends could improve Veteran therapy use. METHODS: We applied a multiple methods approach using data from VA administrative data and semi-structured i

The impact of variation in out-of-hours doctors' referral practices: a Norwegian registry-based observational study.

BACKGROUND: In a gatekeeping system, the individual doctor's referral practice is an important factor for hospital activity and patient safety. OBJECTIVE: The aim of the study was to investigate the variation in out-of-hours (OOH) doctors' referral practice, and to explore these variations' impact on admissions for selected diagnoses reflecting severity, and 30-day mortality. METHODS: National data from the doctors' claims database were linked with hospital data in the Norwegian Patient Registry. Based on the doctor's individual referral rate adjusted for local organizational factors, the do

Catalyst for change: Lessons learned from overcoming barriers to providing safe abortion care in Médecins Sans Frontières projects.

CONTEXT: Despite instituting a policy in 2004, Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) continuously struggled to routinely provide safe abortion care (SAC). In 2016, the organization launched an initiative aimed at increasing availability of SAC in MSF projects and increasing understanding of abortion-related dynamics in humanitarian settings. METHODOLOGY: From March 2017 to April 2018, MSF staff conducted support visits to 10 projects in a country in sub-Saharan Africa. Each visit followed a systematic approach with six key components and related tools that were later shared with teams worldwide. Dat

Sources of social support for postpartum women with a history of childhood maltreatment: Consequences for perceived stress and general mental health in the first year after birth.

BACKGROUND: Women with a history of childhood maltreatment (CM) experience the postpartum period as particularly stressful and may benefit less from social support, implicating a higher risk for mental health problems and higher stress levels in mothers with CM. OBJECTIVE: Thus, we investigated the complex relationship of CM and social support provided by different sources (intimate partner, parents, parents-in-law, friends) in predicting stress perception and mental health over the course of the first year postpartum. PARTICIPANTS: In N = 295 postpartum women we assessed CM experiences, str

Shelter Bans Among People Experiencing Homelessness: an Exploratory Study of Predictors in Two Large Canadian Datasets.

Emergency shelters are a core component of homeless service systems that address immediate basic needs. Service bans, which refer to temporary or permanent disallowances from a program or organization, are an underresearched phenomenon that can leave people experiencing homelessness without needed supports. This exploratory study examined the factors associated with shelter bans among people experiencing homelessness using secondary data from two Canadian studies: (1) a multisite randomized controlled trial of Housing First (At Home/Chez Soi Demonstration Project) and (2) a cross-sectional sur

Puberty is a Critical Period for Vomeronasal Organ Mediation of Socio-sexual Behavior in Mice.

Genetic disruption of the vomeronasal organ (VNO), an organ responsible for pheromone processing, drastically alters socio-sexual behavior in mice. However, it is not known whether the VNO has a role during the pubertal organizational period when sex-typical socio-sexual behaviors emerge, or if disruption of the organ in adulthood is sufficient to alter socio-sexual behavior. To bypass the lifelong VNO disruption of genetic knockout models, we surgically ablated the VNO of male and female mice either during the peripubertal period [postnatal day (PND) 28-30] or adulthood (PND 58-60), with sham

Neurocognitive predictors of adaptive functioning trajectories among youth with spina bifida.

Little is known about how youth with spina bifida (SB) acquire adaptive functioning skills across development. Therefore, the current study examined: (1) trajectories of adaptive functioning in youth with SB as they transitioned from childhood into adolescence, and (2) neuropsychological functioning as a potential risk factor for long-term adaptive functioning difficulties. Participants (n = 131 youth with SB) were recruited as part of a larger ongoing longitudinal study. Growth curves were used to examine changes over time across six adaptive functioning skills: communication, self-direction,

Health and Service-related Impact of Sexual and Stalking Victimization During United States Military Service on LGBT Service Members.

Prior research among military personnel has indicated that sexual harassment, stalking, and sexual assault during military service are related to negative health sequelae. However, research specific to LGBT U.S. service members is limited. The current study aimed to explore the health, service utilization, and service-related impact of stalking and sexual victimization experiences in a sample of active-duty LGBT U.S. service members (N = 248). Respondent-driven sampling was used to recruit study participants. U.S. service members were eligible to participate if they were 18 years or older and

Hanging on for the ride: adhesion to the extracellular matrix mediates cellular responses in skeletal muscle morphogenesis and disease.

Skeletal muscle specification and morphogenesis during early development are critical for normal physiology. In addition to mediating locomotion, skeletal muscle is a secretory organ that contributes to metabolic homeostasis. Muscle is a highly adaptable tissue, as evidenced by the ability to increase muscle cell size and/or number in response to weight bearing exercise. Conversely, muscle wasting can occur during aging (sarcopenia), cancer (cancer cachexia), extended hospital stays (disuse atrophy), and in many genetic diseases collectively known as the muscular dystrophies and myopathies. Development of a techno-humanist model for e-health adoption of innovative technology.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: After investing billions of dollars in an integrated Electronic Medical Records (physicians) and Personal Health Records (patients) system to allow both parties to manage and communicate through e-health innovative technologies, Canada is still making slow adoption progress. In an attempt to bridge the human and technological perspectives by developing and testing a holistic model, this study purports to predict patients' behavioral intentions to use e-health applications. METHODS: An interdisciplinary approach labelled as a techno-humanism model (THM) is testing twelv

"Do you guys tell anybody?": Exploring allocation and implementation of opioid settlement funds and reduced access to health vending machines for people who use drugs.

OBJECTIVE: This study examined how county-level decision-making shaped implementation and accessibility of an opioid-settlement-funded health vending machine (HVM) in California. METHOD: We conducted approximately 250 hours of ethnographic fieldwork and qualitative interviews with 17 HVM users. Using constructivist grounded theory, we analyzed the data to explore how structural and political dynamics influenced program awareness and engagement. RESULTS: Three themes emerged: (1) county leadership placed the HVM in a low-visibility location to minimize anticipated political and organizational
