The effect of stressful life events on adolescents with depression: the chain mediating role of basic psychological needs and self-esteem.

PURPOSE: Adolescent depression has emerged as a critical global public health concern, with stressful life events identified as key environmental risk factors. However, the underlying psychological mechanisms in clinically diagnosed adolescents remain insufficiently explored. This study aims to examine whether basic psychological needs and self-esteem serve as sequential mediators in the relationship between stressful life events and depressive symptoms. PATIENTS AND METHODS: A total of 312 adolescents (aged 12–19 years; 68.8% female) diagnosed with depressive disorder were recruited from a ps

Rail Transport Delay and Its Effects on the Perceived Importance of a Real-Time Information.

Various psychological feelings that commuters might experience due to the shortcomings of a public transport are a major concern for transport policy makers. Those shortcomings would be translated into various negative psychological feelings, which would consequently tarnish the perceived quality of the public transport system in terms of its characteristics, e.g., the perceived quality of the passengers' information system (PIS). A delay has often been defined as the difference between the real arrival of a transport and the scheduled arrival of based on the PIS. The main question this study

Participation motivation and athletes' competitive anxiety, mediating role of psychological resilience and moderating role of sport commitment.

BACKGROUND: As competitive demands in sport increase, competitive anxiety has become an important concern for athletes. Such anxiety may interfere with athletes' performance during a specific competitive event and may also be associated with longer-term mental health difficulties. While existing research has focused on athletes' competitive anxiety, the understanding of its underlying psychological mechanisms remains insufficient. Based on the conservation of resources theory, this study intends to explore the relationship between participation motivation and athletes' competitive anxiety, wit

Longitudinal Association Between Depressive Symptoms and Sleep Problems in Adolescents Following a Natural Disaster: Understanding the Role of Psychological Inflexibility.

Previous studies have investigated the temporal associations between depressive symptoms and sleep problems in traumatized adolescents. However, controversy remains regarding the directionality and underlying mechanisms of these associations, because within- and between-individual effects have not been differentiated. To examine this issue, the current study used the random-intercept cross lagged panel model (RI-CLPM) to assess the temporal associations between depressive symptoms, sleep problems and psychological inflexibility in adolescents following Typhoon Lekima. A sample of 1,341 adolesc

Child behavior problems and parental psychological distress in Chinese families of children with autism: The putative moderating role of parental social support and cultural values.

The wellbeing of parents of children with autism residing in mainland China remains understudied. We aimed to examine whether and how parental perceived social support, individualism, and collectivism acted together to moderate the relationships between child behavior problems and parental psychological distress in Chinese parents of children with autism. With convenience and snowball sampling, data on 268 primary caregiver parents of children with autism were collected from an online cross-sectional survey. Linear regression analysis indicated that child behavior problems were significantly a

Single-cell transcriptome profiling implicates the psychological stress-induced disruption of spermatogenesis.

Male infertility has emerged as a global issue, partly attributed to psychological stress. However, the cellular and molecular mechanisms underlying the adverse effects of psychological stress on male reproductive function remain elusive. We created a psychologically stressed model using terrified-sound and profiled the testes from stressed and control rats using single-cell RNA sequencing. Comparative and comprehensive transcriptome analyses of 11,744 testicular cells depicted the cellular landscape of spermatogenesis and revealed significant molecular alterations of spermatogenesis suffering

Do psychological assessment tools predict spinal cord stimulation treatment outcomes?

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether psychological variables independently predict spinal cord stimulation success or instead moderate pain-response dynamics over time. METHODS: This retrospective cohort included 217 patients undergoing SCS implantation, with available follow-up in 153 at 6 months and 155 at 12 months. Treatment success was defined as a ≥30% reduction in Numeric Rating Scale (NRS) pain from baseline. Baseline psychological measures included Beck Depression Inventory (BDI) categories (Minimal/Mild/Moderate/Severe), Pain Disability Index (PDI) categories (Low/High), and 10 binary Pe

Impacts of gender disparities in mental health and quality of life: A cross-sectional study of Brazilian physicians.

BACKGROUND: Physicians are a professional group at high risk of impaired quality of life (QoL) and mental health due to heavy workloads, exposure to suffering, and structural inequalities. In Brazil, rapid feminisation of the medical workforce has not eliminated gender and regional disparities, and nationwide evidence on physicians' QoL remains scarce. METHODS: This is a nationwide, cross-sectional, web-based survey of licensed physicians in Brazil between July and August 2024. Eligibility required active registration with a Regional Medical Council and prior use of a digital health platform.

The relationship between residential proximity to outdoor play spaces and children's mental and behavioral health: The importance of neighborhood socio-economic characteristics.

Urban outdoor play spaces are reported to improve children's health. However, there is little empirical evidence on the impact of outdoor play spaces on childhood mental and behavioral health. To fill this gap, we investigated the associations between residential proximity to outdoor play spaces and the prevalence of diagnosed mental and behavioral disorders. We explored whether these associations differ by individual and area-level socio-economic status (SES). This cross-sectional study included 151 110 children who were 0-12 years old in 2014 and were visited in public primary health care ce

The role of psychological care in the treatment of gynecological disorders in girls and young women - an interdisciplinary perspective.

This review article explores the psychological dimension of gynecological disorders in girls and young women, emphasizing the need for interdisciplinary approaches in medical care. Gynecological conditions such as endometriosis, polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), and disorders of sex development (DSD) often co-occur with psychological challenges including depression, anxiety, body image issues, and identity-related stress. The chronic nature of symptoms, delayed diagnosis, and potential implications for fertility intensify the emotional burden, particularly during adolescence - a developmental

Key Factors of Adherence in Cardiological Follow-Up of Adults with Congenital Heart Disease.

Approximately 50% of adults with congenital heart defects (ACHD) lack specialised CHD care, increasing the risk of preventable complications and mortality. While there is evidence that psychological factors significantly influence adherence, predictors of attending cardiological routine examinations in ACHD remain understudied. This is the first German study to examine psychological and sociodemographic predictors of adherence in ACHD using the Common-Sense Model of Self-Regulation as a framework. A total of N = 1136 participants from the National Register for Congenital Heart Defects were ana
