The filtration performance of soft colloid suspensions suffers from the agglomeration of the colloids on the membrane surface as filter cakes. Backflushing of fluid through the membrane and cross-flow flushing across the membrane are widely used methods to temporally remove the filter cake and restore the flux through the membrane. However, the phenomena occurring during the recovery of the filtration performance are not yet fully described. In this study, we filtrate poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) microgels and analyze the filter cake in terms of its composition and its dynamic mobility during r

OBJECTIVE: Associations between dysphonia and paradoxical vocal fold motion (PVFM) have been previously reported in adults, but it is unclear whether similar associations exist for adolescents. The goals of this study were to identify the prevalence and severity of voice disorders in adolescent patients with PVFM, identify differences between those with and without clinician-identified dysphonia, and investigate what factors were associated with voice handicap in this population.
METHODS: A retrospective review of eligible adolescent patients diagnosed with PVFM over a 1-year period at a sing…

State monitoring of the complex system needs a large number of sensors. Especially, studies in soft electronics aim to attain complete measurement of the body, mapping various stimulations like temperature, electrophysiological signals, and mechanical strains. However, conventional approach requires many sensor networks that cover the entire curvilinear surfaces of the target area. We introduce a new measuring system, a novel electronic skin integrated with a deep neural network that captures dynamic motions from a distance without creating a sensor network. The device detects minute deformati…

We propose a novel approach to the analysis of synchronized three-dimensional motion in dyads. Motion recorded at high time resolution, as with a gaming device, is preprocessed in each of the three spatial dimensions by spline smoothing. Synchrony is then defined, at each time point, as the cosine between the two individuals' estimated velocity vectors. The approach is extended to allow a time lag, allowing for the analysis of leader-follower dynamics. Mean square cosine over the time range is proposed as a scalar summary of dyadic synchrony, and this measure is found to be positively associat…

BACKGROUND: Migraine is a common disorder most typically presenting as headache and often associated with vertigo and motion sickness. It is a genetically complex condition with multiple genes ultimately contributing to the predisposition and development of this episodic neurological disorder. We identified a large American family of 29 individuals of which 17 members suffered from at least one of these disorders, migraine, vertigo, or motion sickness. Many of these individuals suffered from several simultaneously. We hypothesized that vertigo and motion sickness may involve genes that are ind…

INTRODUCTION: Lumbar pain syndrome is one of the most common conditions in clinical practice, more common than 290 other pathological conditions, which affect up to 84% of adults in a certain period of their life. The origin of the lower back pain can be classified as mechanical, neuropathic and secondary due to another illness. Patient education and information, muscle strengthening exercises, maintenance of routine daily physical activity and pain therapy are the basis of acute non-specific pain syndrome therapy.
AIM: To determine the success of the motion therapy procedure in the preventio…

HtrA2 (high-temperature requirement 2) is a human mitochondrial protease that has a role in apoptosis and Parkinson's disease. The structure … behavior of the enzymatic activity, which together with MD calculations supports the importance of motion in the regulation of the activity of HtrA2. HtrA2 is an unusually thermostable enzyme (TM=97.3 °C), a trait often associated with structural rigidity, not dynamic motion. We suggest that this thermostability functions to provide a stable scaffold fo …

The human visual system has specialised mechanisms for encoding mirror-symmetry and for detecting symmetric motion-directions for objects that loom or recede from the observers. The contribution of motion to mirror-symmetry perception has never been investigated. Here we examine symmetry detection thresholds for stationary (static and dynamic flicker) and symmetrically moving patterns (inwards, outwards, random directions) with and without positional symmetry. We also measured motion detection and direction-discrimination thresholds for horizontal (left, right) and symmetrically moving pattern…

In interocular masking, a stimulus presented to one eye (the mask) is made stronger in order to suppress from awareness the target stimulus presented to the other eye. We investigated whether matching the features of the target and the mask would lead to more effective suppression (feature-selective suppression), or not (i.e., non-selective suppression). To control the temporal characteristics of the stimuli, we used a dynamic interocular mask to suppress a moving target, and found that neither matching speed nor pattern of motion led to more effective suppression. Instead, a faster target was…

Individuals with dyslexia are purported to have a selective dorsal stream impairment that manifests as a deficit in perceiving visual global motion relative to global form. However, the underlying nature of the visual deficit in readers with dyslexia remains unclear. It may be indicative of a difficulty with motion detection, temporal processing, or any task that necessitates integration of local visual information across multiple dimensions (i.e. both across space and over time). To disentangle these possibilities we administered four diagnostic global motion and global form tasks to a large …

The motion of ships can cause discomfort and stress in humans, but little is known about the impact on sheep welfare, despite many sheep traveling long distances by ship during live export. We tested whether exposing sheep to roll (side to side movement), heave (up and down movement), and pitch (front to back movement) with similar amplitude and period conditions to a commercial livestock transport vessel would affect their behavior and physiology. Specifically, we tested the effects of these motions and a control treatment on behavior, heart rate variability, rumination, body posture, and bal…

We continually move our body and our eyes when exploring the world, causing our sensory surfaces, the skin and the retina, to move relative to external objects. In order to estimate object motion consistently, an ideal observer would transform estimates of motion acquired from the sensory surface into fixed, world-centered estimates, by taking the motion of the sensor into account. This ability is referred to as spatial constancy. Human vision does not follow this rule strictly and is therefore subject to perceptual illusions during eye movements, where immobile objects can appear to move. Her…

OBJECT The degenerative process of the spinal column results in instability followed by a progressive loss of segmental motion. Segmental degeneration is associated with intervertebral disc and facet changes, which can be quantified. Correlating this degeneration with clinical segmental motion has not been investigated in the thoracic spine. The authors sought to determine if imaging-determined degeneration would correlate with native range of motion (ROM) or the change in ROM after decompressive procedures, potentially guiding clinical decision making in the setting of spine trauma or followi…

The term "functional" in burn rehabilitation has gained widespread use to describe a patient's recovery after burn injury. But what truly is "functional" when applied to a patient recovering from burn injury? A literature search was performed for information defining "functional" range of motion (ROM). Maximum upper and lower ROM values to perform a variety of daily activities were abstracted and compared with published outcomes of patient groups recovered from burn injury. Seventy references were reviewed leading to categorizing 11 activities and 26 joint motions. Seven burn outcome articles …

OBJECTIVE: Systolic anterior motion (SAM) can occur after mitral valve repair (MVr), most frequently in patients with degenerative valve disease. Our initial observations (1981-1990) revealed that most patients with SAM can be successfully treated medically. Here the authors review the last 16 years of their experience with SAM after MVr.
METHODS: Between January 1996 and October 2011, 1918 patients with degenerative mitral valve disease underwent MVr at our institution. We performed a retrospective analysis of SAM in this patient population.
RESULTS: The incidence of SAM was 4.6% (89 of 191…
