The experimental investigation of foot slip-turning motion of the musculoskeletal robot on toe joints.

Owing to their complex structural design and control system, musculoskeletal robots struggle to execute complicated tasks such as turning with their limited range of motion. This study investigates the utilization of passive toe joints in the foot slip-turning motion of a musculoskeletal robot to turn on its toes with minimum movements to reach the desired angle while increasing the turning angle and its range of mobility. The different conditions of plantar intrinsic muscles (PIM) were also studied in the experiment to investigate the effect of actively controlling the stiffness of toe joints

Self-Healing: A Concept for Musculoskeletal Body Pain Management - Scientific Evidence and Mode of Action.

Traditionally, musculoskeletal pain management has focused on the use of conventional treatments to relieve pain. However, multi-modal integrative medicine including alternative/complementary treatments is becoming more widely used and integrated into treatment guidelines around the world. The uptake of this approach varies according to country, with generally a higher uptake in developed countries and in females aged more than 40 years. Integral to the concept described here, is that the body has an innate ability to self-heal, which can be optimized by the use of integrative medical strategi

Recurrent diabetic ketoacidosis: a rare presenting manifestation of primary hyperparathyroidism.

Hydatidosis is a zoonotic disease; human infection occurs through the consumption of food and water contaminated with the eggs of parasites of the Echinococcus type. While the liver is the most common site of infection, involvement of the musculoskeletal system is extremely rare. In the context of musculoskeletal involvement, the spine is the most commonly infected site, while the muscles are rarely infected and account for approximately <1% of cases. It has been suggested that muscles provide an unsuitable environment for the parasite, because of the presence of lactic acid. The cysts appear …

Common sports-related musculoskeletal injuries presenting to the emergency department.

Young athletes are specialising in sports at a younger age, placing the developing musculoskeletal system under considerable stress. Overuse injuries such as apophysitis are chronic in nature and account for a large proportion of musculoskeletal injuries suffered by young athletes; however, with an increased emphasis on success in sport, tendinopathy and fatigue fractures are now being reported with increasing frequency, in the adolescent population. Correct diagnosis and early protection, rest, ice, compression and elevation therapy is critical, along with supervised rehabilitation an expert …

Orthopaedic surgery in haemophilia patients with inhibitors as the last resort.

Haemophilia patients with inhibitors commonly present much more severe musculoskeletal problems than patients without inhibitors. With haematological advances using recombinant activated factor VII (rFVIIa) and activated prothrombin complex concentrate (aPCC), it is now possible to perform orthopaedic procedures in these patients with a high rate of success. In Spain, the healthcare system sets no financial limits for the treatment of haemophilia, and children with haemophilia today have a much better musculoskeletal status than 30 years ago. However, the children of 30 years ago are now adult

Non-invasive distal femoral expandable endoprosthesis for limb-salvage surgery in paediatric tumours.

We report our early experience with the use of a non-invasive distal femoral expandable endoprosthesis in seven skeletally immature patients with osteosarcoma of the distal femur. The patients had a mean age of 12.1 years (9 to 15) at the time of surgery. The prosthesis was lengthened at appropriate intervals in outpatient clinics, without anaesthesia, using the principle of electromagnetic induction. The patients were functionally evaluated using the Musculoskeletal Tumour Society scoring system. The mean follow-up was 20.2 months (14 to 30). The prostheses were lengthened by a mean of 25 mm

The Emerging Role of Exosomal Non-coding RNAs in Musculoskeletal Diseases.

Exosomes are phospholipid bilayer-enclosed membrane vesicles derived and constitutively secreted by various metabolically active cells. They are capable of mediating hetero- and homotypic intercellular communication by transferring multiple cargos from donor cells to recipient cells. Nowadays, non-coding RNAs (ncRNAs) have emerged as novel potential biomarkers or disease-targeting agents in a variety of diseases. However, the lack of effective delivery systems may impair their clinical application. Recently, accumulating evidence demonstrated that ncRNAs could be efficiently delivered to recip

Autonomic responses to aerobic and resistance exercise in patients with chronic musculoskeletal pain: A systematic review.

BACKGROUND: It is unknown whether patients with chronic musculoskeletal pain (CMP) show autonomic dysregulation after exercise, and the interventional effects of exercise on the autonomic dysregulation have not been elucidated. The objectives of this study were to reveal acute autonomic responses after aerobic and resistance exercises and the interventional effects of both exercises on autonomic dysregulation in patients with CMP. METHODS: A systematic search using nine electronic databases was performed based on three key search terms: "chronic musculoskeletal pain," "autonomic nervous syste

Vitamin B9 derivatives as carriers of bioactive cations for musculoskeletal regeneration applications: Synthesis, characterization and biological evaluation.

The development of new drugs for musculoskeletal regeneration purposes has attracted much attention in the last decades. In this work, we present three novel vitamin B9 (folic acid)-derivatives bearing divalent cations (ZnFO, MgFO and MnFO), providing their synthesis mechanism and physicochemical characterization. In addition, a strong emphasis has been placed on evaluating their biological properties (along with our previously reported SrFO) using human mesenchymal stem cells (hMSC). In all the cases, pure folate derivatives (MFOs) with a bidentate coordination mode between the metal and the

Congenital pelvic skeletal anomalies: Clinical and radiographic evaluation of newborns with gastrointestinal malformation.

BACKGROUND: Congenital pelvic skeletal anomalies (CPSA) may appear as isolated defects or in association with other anomalies like congenital malformations of the digestive system (CMDS). Minor CPSA in non-syndromic patients are often overlooked. We aimed to assess the frequency of CPSA in newborns with CMDS to review the diagnostic approaches. STUDY DESIGN: A retrospective review of medical records of 201 newborns who underwent X-rays for different neonatal indications was conducted. In 122 patients CMDS were diagnosed and classified according to the ICD-10 classification; 79 non-CMDS patien

The impact of musculoskeletal injuries sustained in road traffic crashes on work-related outcomes: a protocol for a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Musculoskeletal injuries (strains/sprains, contusions, dislocations, and fractures) are the most common injury sustained in a road traffic crash. They can have a long-term impact upon the ability to engage in work. Persisting symptoms as well as poor physical and psychological recovery may reduce the ability to return to or remain at work necessitating the use of sick leave or alternate duties to enable a gradual return to full duties. There is also a need to investigate rates of return to work, along with other work-related outcomes in this population so that interventions designe

New biotechnologies for musculoskeletal injuries.

The practice of any sport is inherently associated with the risk of musculoskeletal lesions. We describe regenerative medicine technologies, including cellular therapies, gene therapies and multimolecular preparations of growth factors and cytokines, which are expected to advance the field of orthopaedics and sports medicine. Gene therapy involves the introduction of genetic information in the injured tissue to help that tissue to heal and, possibly, regenerate. Cell therapies used in clinical practice are based on the transplantation of adult human cells, which can be at different stages of d

Thromboembolic Disease After Orthopedic Trauma.

Orthopedic trauma results in systemic physiologic changes that predispose patients to venous thromboembolism (VTE). In the absence of prophylaxis, VTE incidence may be as high as 60%. Mechanical and pharmacologic thromboprophylaxis are effective in decreasing rates of VTE. Combined mechanical and pharmacologic thromboprophylaxis is more efficacious for decreasing VTE incidence than either regimen independently. If pharmacologic thromboprophylaxis is contraindicated, mechanical prophylaxis should be used. Patients with isolated lower extremity fractures who are ambulatory, or those with isolate

Cost and effectiveness issues in care of injured patients.

Injury remains the leading public health problem in the United States in terms of cost and years of life lost. It is the number 1 cause of death and disability from birth to 44 years old, which is the most economically productive segment of our population. In the current environment of rapid-pace health care system reform at the state and national levels, trauma care systems have evolved at the forefront; regionalization, continuous quality improvement systems, designation/accreditation systems, registry databases, and cost-effectiveness evaluations are being implemented in many states.
