A novel graph neural network method for Alzheimer's disease classification.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a chronic neurodegenerative disease. Early diagnosis are very important to timely treatment and delay the progression of the disease. In the past decade, many computer-aided diagnostic (CAD) algorithms have been proposed for classification of AD. In this paper, we propose a novel graph neural network method, termed Brain Graph Attention Network (BGAN) for classification of AD. First, brain graph data are used to model classification of AD as a graph classification task. Second, a local attention layer is designed to capture and aggregate messages of interactions bet

Cycle contrastive adversarial learning with structural consistency for unsupervised high-quality image deraining transformer.

In overcoming the challenges faced in adapting to paired real-world data, recent unsupervised single image deraining (SID) methods have proven capable of accomplishing notably acceptable deraining performance. However, the previous methods usually fail to produce a high quality rain-free image due to neglecting sufficient attention to semantic representation and the image content, which results in the inability to completely separate the content from the rain layer. In this paper, we develop a novel cycle contrastive adversarial framework for unsupervised SID, which mainly consists of cycle co

Comparative study of respiratory sounds classification methods based on cepstral analysis and artificial neural networks.

In this paper, we investigated and evaluated various machine learning-based approaches for automatically detecting wheezing sounds. We conducted a comprehensive comparison of these proposed systems, assessing their classification performance through metrics such as Sensitivity, Specificity, and Accuracy. The main approach to developing a machine learning-based system for classifying respiratory sounds involved the combination of a technique for extracting features from an unknown input sound with a classification method to determine its belonging class. The characterization techniques used in

Exploring Wav2vec 2.0 Model for Heart Sound Analysis.

This study investigates the utilization of the wav2vec 2.0 framework for heart sound analysis, with the intention to reduce the reliance on supervised data provided by cardiologists. Leveraging the self-supervised learning concept, wav2vec learns audio context representations by solving pretext tasks, thus diminishing the need for labeled data in downstream tasks. The model was pre-trained on heart sounds, lung sounds, and hospital ambient noise to sufficiently grasp the acoustic features of biological sounds. To tailor this pre-trained model for heart sound analysis, we employ either freezing

Photonic neuromorphic accelerators for event-based imaging flow cytometry.

In this work, we present experimental results of a high-speed label-free imaging cytometry system that seamlessly merges the high-capturing rate and data sparsity of an event-based CMOS camera with lightweight photonic neuromorphic processing. This combination offers high classification accuracy and a massive reduction in the number of trainable parameters of the digital machine-learning back-end. The event-based camera is capable of capturing 1 Gevents/sec, where events correspond to pixel contrast changes, similar to the retina's ganglion cell function. The photonic neuromorphic accelerator

microT-CNN: an avant-garde deep convolutional neural network unravels functional miRNA targets beyond canonical sites.

microRNAs (miRNAs) are central post-transcriptional gene expression regulators in healthy and diseased states. Despite decades of effort, deciphering miRNA targets remains challenging, leading to an incomplete miRNA interactome and partially elucidated miRNA functions. Here, we introduce microT-CNN, an avant-garde deep convolutional neural network model that moves the needle by integrating hundreds of tissue-matched (in-)direct experiments from 26 distinct cell types, corresponding to a unique training and evaluation set of >60 000 miRNA binding events and ~30 000 unique miRNA-gene target pair

A deep learning based dual encoder-decoder framework for anatomical structure segmentation in chest X-ray images.

Automated multi-organ segmentation plays an essential part in the computer-aided diagnostic (CAD) of chest X-ray fluoroscopy. However, developing a CAD system for the anatomical structure segmentation remains challenging due to several indistinct structures, variations in the anatomical structure shape among different individuals, the presence of medical tools, such as pacemakers and catheters, and various artifacts in the chest radiographic images. In this paper, we propose a robust deep learning segmentation framework for the anatomical structure in chest radiographs that utilizes a dual enc

A new dataset of oral panoramic x-ray images and parallel network using transformers for medical image segmentation.

INTRODUCTION: Accurate segmentation of the key mandibular region in the oral panoramic X-ray image is crucial for the diagnosis of the mandibular region and the planning of implant surgery. Because the oral panoramic X-ray image contains many important anatomical information for implant treatment evaluation. However, the fuzzy boundary between each region in the image makes the segmentation task very challenging. In data-driven segmentation methods, corresponding datasets are often required. Due to the limited oral data set at present, there is a bottleneck in clinical application. MATERIALS

Automatic diagnosis of retention pseudocyst in the maxillary sinus on panoramic radiographs using a convolutional neural network algorithm.

The evaluation of the maxillary sinus is very important in dental practice such as tooth extraction and implantation because of its proximity to the teeth, but it is not easy to evaluate because of the overlapping structures such as the maxilla and the zygoma on panoramic radiographs. When doom-shaped retention pseudocysts are observed in sinus on panoramic radiographs, they are often misdiagnosed as cysts or tumors, and additional computed tomography is performed, resulting in unnecessary radiation exposure and cost. The purpose of this study was to develop a deep learning model that automati

Dual center validation of deep learning for automated multi-label segmentation of thoracic anatomy in bedside chest radiographs.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Bedside chest radiographs (CXRs) are challenging to interpret but important for monitoring cardiothoracic disease and invasive therapy devices in critical care and emergency medicine. Taking surrounding anatomy into account is likely to improve the diagnostic accuracy of artificial intelligence and bring its performance closer to that of a radiologist. Therefore, we aimed to develop a deep convolutional neural network for efficient automatic anatomy segmentation of bedside CXRs. METHODS: To improve the efficiency of the segmentation process, we introduced a "human-i

Real-time estimation of lung deformation from body surface using a general CoordConv CNN.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Estimating the three-dimensional (3D) deformation of the lung is important for accurate dose delivery in radiotherapy and precise surgical guidance in lung surgery navigation. Additional 4D-CT information is often required to eliminate the effect of individual variations and obtain a more accurate estimation of lung deformation. However, this results in increased radiation dose. Therefore, we propose a novel method that estimates lung tissue deformation from depth maps and two CT phases per patient. METHODS: The method models the 3D motion of each voxel as a linear d

BACKGROUND: White-light endoscopy (WLE) is a main and standard modality for detection of early gastric cancer (EGC). The detection rate of EGC is not satisfactory so far. In this single-center retrospective study we developed a convolutional neural network (CNN)-based system to automatically detect EGC in WLE images. METHODS: An EGC detecting system was constructed based on the CNN architecture EfficientDet. We trained our system with a data set including 4527 images from 130 cases (cancerous images, 1737; noncancerous images, 2790). Then we tested its performance with a data set including 12

BUS-Net: Breast Tumour Detection Network for Ultrasound Images Using Bi-directional ConvLSTM and Dense Residual Connections.

Breast ultrasound (BUS) imaging has become one of the key imaging modalities for medical image diagnosis and prognosis. However, the manual process of lesion delineation from ultrasound images can incur various challenges concerning variable shape, size, intensity, curvature, or other medical priors of the lesion in the image. Therefore, computer-aided diagnostic (CADx) techniques incorporating deep learning-based neural networks are automatically used to segment the lesion from BUS images. This paper proposes an encoder-decoder-based architecture to recognize and accurately segment the lesion
