There has been a consensus that a large granular lymphocyte (LGL) population with natural killer (NK) function is nonadherent and nonphagocytic. However, a significant proportion of the nonadherent cells purified by the two-step depletion of adherent cells with a plastic surface and nylon wool columns engulfed Sta. aureus into their cytoplasm. An epithelial cell line (MDCK) was used to prepare monolayers which, in vitro, develop properties of transporting epithelia. Monolayers were formed by plating cells at high densities (10(6) cells/cm2) on collagen-coated nylon cloth disks to saturate the area available for attachment, thus avoiding the need for cell division. PURPOSE: To report the results and complications of scleral fixation of intraocular lens (SF-IOL) in traumatized eyes of children with iris defects and inadequate capsular support with technique customized to the condition of the eye.
METHODS: Retrospective review of pediatric eyes with a history of open globe injury and SF-IOLs. All eyes had undergone pars plana vitrectomy and lensectomy after primary repair of the laceration. Site of scleral fixation and limbal incision were selected according to the site of traumatic scar, remaining capsular support, and keratometry.

BACKGROUND & OBJECTIVE: Insecticide treated mosquito nets are increasingly being used in malaria control programmes. One of the problems with the treatment of bed nets with conventional formulations of insecticides was that regular washing of treated nets diminish insecticidal effect. Lambdacyhalothrin 2.5 capsule suspension (CS) (2.5% a.i., w/v), a new water-based microencapsulated formulation is reported to have wash-resistant property and longer persistence on the netting material than other formulations. PURPOSE: We examined the cytoprotective influences of the mucoadhesive polymer, poly(DMAEMA), on human mucus-producing intestinal epithelial monolayers against two bacterial exotoxins and S. typhimurium. Direct anti-bacterial effects were also assessed against S. typhimurium.
METHODS: In the presence and absence of mucus, untreated or poly(DMAEMA)-exposed monolayers were challenged with S. typhimurium or supernatants containing either cholera (CTx) or C. difficile toxins. Assays included LDH, cytokine secretion, cyclic AMP (cAMP) and microscopy to visualise bacterial adherence by monolayers.

PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to determine the long-term treatment efficacy of glycerine-preserved human amniotic membrane transplantation in patients suffering from corneal ulcers.
METHODS: This was a retrospective, non-controlled, monocentric analysis. Included were patients with corneal ulcers that were non-responsive to ointment or contact lenses and had been treated by amniotic membrane transplantation with either the overlay or sandwich procedure. Analysis parameters were visual acuity before and following treatment, recurrence rate and subjective comfort at the last follow-up.
