Forty-eight pathologic and impending pathologic fractures of the proximal femur were surgically treated in 38 patients averaging 70 years of age. The most common tumors were breast (45%), multiple myeloma (24%), and lung (11%). Tumor size, aggressiveness, and location influenced the type of fixation. Sixty-four percent of the lesions were treated by flexible intramedullary nails. Vasoregression is a common phenomenon underlying physiological vessel development as well as pathological microvascular diseases leading to peripheral neuropathy, nephropathy, and vascular oculopathies. In this review, we describe the hallmarks and pathways of vasoregression. We argue here that there is a parallel between characteristic features of vasoregression in the ocular microvessels and atherosclerosis in the larger vessels. Histologic variants of idiopathic focal segmental glomerulosclerosis (FSGS) may have prognostic value. A recent working classification system has distinguished five FSGS variants. We evaluated a cohort of adult patients with biopsy-proven FSGS diagnosed between March 1982 and July 2001 to determine if subtypes were associated with renal outcome. OBJECTIVES: To assess the spectrum of hepatic disorders in AIDS, liver specimens from 171 patients (155 autopsies and 16 biopsies) were reviewed.
