The luminance contrast needed to discern various test types was measured with monochromatic and achromatic light to detect discrete functional deficiencies of the retina and optic nerve in cases of normal visual acuity. Landolt rings corresponding to visual acuity levels from 0.04 to 1.0 were used as test types. A significant increase in the necessary minimum contrast was detectable with blue test light on large Landolt rings in patients with diabetic retinopathy, ocular hypertension and glaucoma and with green or yellow test light on medium-sized and small Landolt rings in patients with centr

BACKGROUND: We recently developed the Amblyopia & Strabismus Questionnaire (A&SQ) to assess the quality of life in amblyopia and/or strabismus patients, and evaluated its content and criterion validity. The A&SQ was now validated clinically by correlating its outcome with past and current orthoptic parameters in a historic cohort of amblyopia and/or strabismus patients.
METHODS: The cohort was derived from all 471 patients who were treated by occlusion therapy in the Waterland Hospital in Purmerend between 1968 and 1974 and born between 1962 and 1972. All children with insufficient visual acu

Among 173 patients who had rhegmatogenous retinal detachment with spared maculas, high percentage achieved anatomic and functional success. We reattached 171 (99%) of the retinas; 150 (76%) of the eyes had final visual acuities of 6/15 (20/50) or better. Eighteen eyes (10%) had final postoperative visual acuities reduced more than two lines from the preoperative level. This reduced visual acuity was primarily related to postoperative changes occurring in the macula. The prognosis both for anatomic reattachment and visual acuity after scleral buckling for rhegmatogenous retinal detachment is si

BACKGROUND: Amyloidosis is caused by misfolding of proteins and is characterized by formation of extracellular aggregates of insoluble fibrin. The primary effects in the eye include sharp deterioration of visual acuity as a result of vitreous opacity. According to the local and systemic distribution characteristics of amyloid deposits and their fibrin components, amyloidosis can be classified as primary, secondary or familial. Therefore, we report a typical case of vitreous amyloidosis in hereditary transthyretin amyloidosis (hATTR) to improve ophthalmologists' understanding of the disease and

BACKGROUND: Central retinal artery occlusion (CRAO) is a rare ocular-ischemic syndrome causing irreversible blindness. Its pathophysiology has not been clarified, and no targeted therapies are available yet. Hyperbaric oxygen (HBO2) therapy is already an approved therapy for CRAO and has been shown to improve the visual acuity of CRAO patients safely. However, further clinical data are required to classify HBO2 therapy as a type-I general agreement for CRAO.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Eleven patients with non-arteritic CRAO were enrolled. Patient demographics, medical history, detailed eye examin
