Measurement of interocular delays with dynamic random-dot stereograms.

A psychophysical method of measuring interocular delay based on dynamic random-dot stereograms is presented. The measurement requires only about 2 min. The sensitivity of this method to detect differences in the transmission times of the two optic nerves is demonstrated in patients with multiple sclerosis and in healthy subjects in whom interocular delays were produced by using different luminance levels for each eye. This new method may be a useful and economic method for monitoring the time course of optic neuritis.

[Are the lesions responsible for prosopagnosia always bilateral?].

To localize the lesions responsible for prosopagnosia one must first consider how recent anatomico-physiological data have modified our view of the visual system: the visual cortex has been parceled into a mosaic of visual areas, each of them processing preferentially a particular feature (form, colour, movement); there is evidence of a face area in the monkey temporal lobe, and a new model of the inferior longitudinal fasciculus has been offered. It is currently accepted that face recognition deficits are due to bilateral occipito-temporal lesions, but in view of several recent reports in whi

Pure agraphia and Gerstmann's syndrome as a visuospatial-language dissociation: an experimental case study.

A right-handed man suffered a left parieto-occipital cerebral infarction, causing agraphia with Gerstmann's syndrome but without major aphasia, alexia, or apraxia. Oral spelling was superior to written spelling. Experiments were performed involving (1) analysis of errors in writing, (2) tasks of visual imagery, and (3) identifying letters drawn without leaving a visual trace. The results suggest that the agraphia and Gerstmann's syndrome are due to a dissociation of language skills and visuospatial skills caused by a dominant parieto-occipital lesion.

Fingerprints of Learned Object Recognition Seen in the fMRI Activation Patterns of Lateral Occipital Complex.

One feature of visual processing in the ventral stream is that cortical responses gradually depart from the physical aspects of the visual stimulus and become correlated with perceptual experience. Thus, unlike early retinotopic areas, the responses in the object-related lateral occipital complex (LOC) are typically immune to parameter changes (e.g., contrast, location, etc.) when these do not affect recognition. Here, we use a complementary approach to highlight changes in brain activity following a shift in the perceptual state (in the absence of any alteration in the physical image). Specif

[A case of reflex epilepsy with binasal visual field defects attack induced by family computer game].

A 12-year-old male case of reflex epilepsy with visual field defects attack induced by a family computer game was reported. This patient showed binasal visual field defects attack when he was playing a family computer game. Neurological findings and ophthalmological examinations were normal. EEG showed spike and slow wave complex distributed on right occipital region. These paroxysmal waves were activated by checkerboard pattern reversal stimuli. Stimulus intensity was closely related with these activations, but not stimulus ratio was. Examinations of brain CT and brain MRI were normal. This p

The effect of mild traumatic brain injury on the visual processing of global form and motion.

Cortical visual processing involves the ventral stream (form perception) and the dorsal stream (motion perception). We assessed whether mild traumatic brain injury (TBI) differentially affects these two streams. Eleven adults with mild TBI (28 ± 9 yrs, 17 ± 5 months post injury) and 25 controls (25 ± 5 yrs) participated. Participants completed tests of global processing involving Glass patterns (form) and random dot kinematograms (motion), measurement of contrast thresholds for motion direction discrimination, a comprehensive vision screening and the Post-Concussion Symptom Inventory (PCSI). Evoked potentials in the evaluation of visual field defects due to chiasmal or retrochiasmal lesions.

We used monocular full-field and hemifield pattern reversal stimulation to study visual evoked potentials (VEPs) in 20 patients with confirmed defects of the visual pathways. In 10 of 12 patients with homonymous field defects, it was possible to lateralize the brain lesion but not to predict the site of the lesion within the hemisphere. In four of eight patients with bitemporal field defects, VEPs suggested involvement at the chiasmal level. In the remaining cases, VEPs provided no correlation with perimetric and radiologic findings. We found that VEPs usually corroborated other diagnostic stu

Individual face- and house-related eye movement patterns distinctively activate FFA and PPA.

We investigated if the fusiform face area (FFA) and the parahippocampal place area (PPA) contain a representation of fixation sequences that are typically used when looking at faces or houses. Here, we instructed observers to follow a dot presented on a uniform background. The dot's movements represented gaze paths acquired separately from observers looking at face or house pictures. Even when gaze dispersion differences were controlled, face- and house-associated gaze patterns could be discriminated by fMRI multivariate pattern analysis in FFA and PPA, more so for the current observer's own g

Decoding the content of visual short-term memory under distraction in occipital and parietal areas.

Recent studies have provided conflicting accounts regarding where in the human brain visual short-term memory (VSTM) content is stored, with strong univariate fMRI responses being reported in superior intraparietal sulcus (IPS), but robust multivariate decoding being reported in occipital cortex. Given the continuous influx of information in everyday vision, VSTM storage under distraction is often required. We found that neither distractor presence nor predictability during the memory delay affected behavioral performance. Similarly, superior IPS exhibited consistent decoding of VSTM content a

Measuring the face-sensitive N170 with a gaming EEG system: A validation study.

BACKGROUND: The N170 is a "face-sensitive" event-related potential (ERP) that occurs at around 170ms over occipito-temporal brain regions. The N170's potential to provide insight into the neural processing of faces in certain populations (e.g., children and adults with cognitive impairments) is limited by its measurement in scientific laboratories that can appear threatening to some people. NEW METHOD: The advent of cheap, easy-to-use portable gaming EEG systems provides an opportunity to record EEG in new contexts and populations. This study tested the validity of the face-sensitive N170 ERP

[Neurophysiological Features of Perception of Emotional Stimuli in Health and in Patients with Paranoid Schizophrenia].

Cognitive and emotional disorders, as far as is known, are the main syndromes of schizophrenia. Disorders of these functions are mainly determined by the clinical picture, as well as by psychophysiological correlates. The purpose of our study was to identify some psychophysiological factors which cause perceptual and emotional disturbances in patients with schizophrenia. These disorders of mental functions form the first rank (top) syndrome in patients with schizophrenia [1]. The studied patients had acute psychosis with a predominance of paranoid hallucinatory syndrome and did not receive ant

[Sensory analysis of the words with different occurrence frequency in the norm and in patients with schizophrenia and schizophrenic spectrum disorders].

The paper introduces the study of the early stages of verbal information processing in the brain during the passive reading of single words with different occurrence frequency in Russian and of pseudo-words in healthy subjects and in patients with schizophrenia and schizophrenic spectrum disorders using evoked potentials method. It is shown that the latency of P100 and N170 in healthy subjects increased during visual perception of rare words compared to frequent ones and pseudo-words that apparently reflected the necessity to involve large quantity of brain resources during sensory stages of t

Functional subdomains within human FFA.

The fusiform face area (FFA) is a well-studied human brain region that shows strong activation for faces. In functional MRI studies, FFA is often assumed to be a homogeneous collection of voxels with similar visual tuning. To test this assumption, we used natural movies and a quantitative voxelwise modeling and decoding framework to estimate category tuning profiles for individual voxels within FFA. We find that the responses in most FFA voxels are strongly enhanced by faces, as reported in previous studies. However, we also find that responses of individual voxels are selectively enhanced or

Effect of adaptation on object representation accuracy in macaque inferior temporal cortex.

Stimulus repetition produces a decrease of the response in many cortical areas and different modalities. This adaptation is highly prominent in macaque inferior temporal (IT) neurons. Here we ask how these repetition-induced changes in IT responses affect the accuracy by which IT neurons encode objects. This question bears on the functional consequences of adaptation, which are still unclear. We recorded the responses of single IT neurons to sequences of familiar shapes, each shown for 300 msec with an ISI of the same duration. The difference in shape between the two successively presented sti

Age-related differences in event-related potentials for early visual processing of emotional faces.

With advancing age, processing resources are shifted away from negative emotional stimuli and toward positive ones. Here, we explored this 'positivity effect' using event-related potentials (ERPs). Participants identified the presence or absence of a visual probe that appeared over photographs of emotional faces. The ERPs elicited by the onsets of angry, sad, happy and neutral faces were recorded. We examined the frontocentral emotional positivity (FcEP), which is defined as a positive deflection in the waveforms elicited by emotional expressions relative to neutral faces early on in the time

Parieto-occipital cortex shows early target selection to faces in a reflexive orienting task.

It is well established that human faces induce stronger involuntary orienting responses than other visual objects. Yet, the timing of this preferential orienting response at the neural level is still unknown. Here, we used an antisaccade paradigm to investigate the neural dynamics preceding the onset of reflexive and voluntary saccades elicited by human faces and nonface visual objects, normalized for their global low-level visual properties. High-density event-related potentials (ERPs) were recorded in observers as they performed interleaved pro- and antisaccades toward a lateralized target.
