An Association Between Serotonin 1A Receptor, Gray Matter Volume, and Sociability in Healthy Subjects and in Autism Spectrum Disorder.

Central serotonin is an important molecular pathway, involved in the regulation of social behavior and gray matter volume (GMV). In men with autism spectrum disorders (ASD), the serotonergic system and the GMV have been found disrupted. Here, we investigated the relation between serotonin, GMV, and social personality in men with typical development (TD) and in men with ASD. We combined anatomical magnetic resonance imaging, Positron emission tomography scan with 2'-methoxyphenyl-(N-2'-pyridinyl)-p-18F-fluoro-benzamidoethylpiperazine radioligand and revised NEO personality inventory personality

Callous-unemotional traits and the emotional processing of distress cues in detained boys: testing the moderating role of aggression, exposure to community violence, and histories of abuse.

Callous-unemotional (CU) traits in antisocial youth have been associated with deficits in the processing of emotionally distressing stimuli in a number of past studies. In the current study, we investigated moderators of this association in a sample of 88 ethnically diverse detained boys (mean age = 15.57, SD = 1.28). Overall, emotional processing of distressing stimuli using a dot-probe task was not related to CU traits and there was no moderating effect of ethnicity. However, CU traits were related to deficits in emotional processing in youth high on aggression and youth high on exposure to

[Self-injury in hospitalized patients: Concerning 19 cases].

INTRODUCTION: Self-mutilating behaviour is expanding, especially among adolescents and patients with a psychiatric disorder. CLINICAL MATERIAL: We have tried to describe the self-mutilating behaviour in Moroccan inpatients of the psychiatric department of Mohammed V Military Hospital of Rabat, through a prospective and descriptive longitudinal study over a period of four months, based on a questionnaire prepared according to the literature data to allow discussing its results. RESULTS: The rate of participation was 90.4%, or 19 patients. All patients were male. The age of onset of self-injur

How useful are clinical reports concerning the consequences of therapist-patient sex?

The harmfulness and prevalence of sex between therapist and patient are difficult to research. One reason for this is the difficult of establishing a rate of harm; general population trends cannot be established within reasonable limits. A second problem involves determining the cause of observed harm. Therapists who treat patients who have had sex with a therapist may incorrectly conclude that symptoms resulted from that inappropriate relationship, while another therapist might attribute them to childhood sexual abuse or other causes. Patients with borderline or histrionic personality disorde

Adjustment issues with adult children of alcoholics.

The current study assessed locus of control, general level of life satisfaction, and self-reported grade-point averages among adults who had experienced either alcoholism within the family of origin, traumatic life events other than alcoholism, or who indicated neither problem during their childhood. Results indicated that both the adult children of alcoholics (ACOA) and traumatic experience (TE) groups had lower life satisfaction scores than the control group. Significantly lower levels of locus of control also were found for the ACOA group in comparison to the control group. There were no si

Behavioural and cognitive characteristics of conduct disordered-hyperactive boys from age 6 to 11: a multiple informant perspective.

Three subgroups of kindergarten boys (stable conduct disordered-hyperactive (SCDH), stable conduct disordered (SCD), stable non-deviant control (SC)) were defined and followed up three, four and five years later in primary school. Using assessments from multiple informants (teachers, mothers, peers, self), the results showed that SCDH boys were more hyperactive (i.e. overactive/inattentive) and displayed a greater diversity of conduct problems in school and home at follow-up compared to the other groups. These results and the fact that during early adolescence SCDH boys tend to develop a worse

[Personality self-actualization: an independent additional risk factor of myocardial infarction and unstable angina].

It is shown for the first time that changes of self-actualization (SA) in patients with CHD are the main risk factor of myocardial infarction (MI) and unstable angina (UA). The clinical course and prognosis of MI correlate with SA prior to the development of an acute coronary event. Isolated correlations exist between CHD risk factors and results of SA questionnaire studies. SA personality peculiarities in patients with MI and UA account for more than 50% dispersion of the results of linear factor analysis.

Musical hallucinations: a statistical analysis of 46 cases.

Musical hallucinations remain rare, are more common in women, and their onset is often related to ear pathology, particularly deafness. When brain disease is involved, pathology of the right or non-dominant hemisphere seems overrepresented. Psychosis and personality traits play a minimal role in their development. A discriminant function was constructed that correctly predicted the presence of brain disease (89%) and included the following clinical variables: being male, having acute onset musical hallucinations, and absence of deafness, psychiatric disease, and other forms of hallucination.

Temperament-based treatment for anorexia nervosa.

Anorexia nervosa (AN) tends to be a chronic and deadly disorder with no proven treatments that reverse core symptoms in adults. New insight into neurobiological mechanisms that contribute to symptoms may support development of more effective interventions. We describe the development of a temperament-based treatment for AN on the basis of empirically supported models. It uses a systemized approach and takes into consideration an understanding of how neurobiological mechanisms are expressed through behaviour and personality and contribute to specific AN symptomatology. This model integrates the

Development and Validation of the Scale for Understanding Life-Oriented Expression and Dispositions.

OBJECTIVE: This study developed and validated the Scale for Understanding Life-Oriented Expression and Dispositions (SULEDIS), a self-report tool designed to assess adult dispositional orientations across multiple life domains. The SULEDIS addresses limitations in existing temperament and personality measures by capturing both motivational drives and relational context. METHODS: Researchers created the SULEDIS through theoretical review, expert consultation, and iterative item refinement. Grounded in a dual-axis framework, the scale evaluates four orientations-health and wellness, relationshi

Through a Dark Lens: A Longitudinal Study on Dark Triad Traits, Future Negative Insight, and Antisocial Attitudes.

Life history framework underscores the importance of time perspective in studies on dark personality development and its outcomes. This study aims to examine the potential role of future negative insight between Dark Triad and antisocial attitudes through a temporal process. Data were collected from 245 participants (120 boys, 125 girls; mean age = 15.58, SD = 1.76) across three time points in a longitudinal design. Study 1 used structural equation modeling (SEM) with baseline data (T1) to examine the mediating role of future negative insight in the relationship between Dark Triad traits and a…

Substance Addiction in Adolescents: Influence of Parenting and Personality Traits.

BACKGROUND: Substance use in adolescents has been separately related to personality traits and parental socialization styles; in this study, our objective was to study these variables in an integrated way. METHODS: A cross-sectional observational study was conducted in five institutes in a final sample of 331 students, excluding those with gaming disorder. The sample was stratified into three subgroups: 'no addiction', 'low risk', and 'high risk' of Substance Use Disorders (SUD). RESULTS: 12.9% of the adolescents presented a low risk of SUD, while 18.3% showed a high risk, with both being ol

Emotion Dysregulation in Personality Disorders.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: This manuscript aims to take stock of emotion dysregulation and personality disorder (PD) research, review key findings, and highlight future directions. RECENT FINDINGS: Most emotion dysregulation research in PDs has focused on borderline personality disorder (BPD). BPD is characterized by high baseline negative emotion and the use of maladaptive emotion regulation strategies, but several other emotion dysregulation components may not be pervasively evident in the disorder. Trends in the BPD field that add nuance to the study of emotion dysregulation suggest that BPD may i

Development of a measure of aggressive behavior expectancies in adults: The Aggression Expectancy Questionnaire.

According to sociocognitive theories, aggression is learned and elicited through a series of cognitive processes, such as expectancies, or the various consequences that an individual considers more or less likely following aggressive behavior. The current manuscript describes a measurement development project that ultimately yielded a 16-item measure of positive and negative aggression expectancies suitable for use in adult populations. Across two content generation surveys, two preliminary item refinement studies, and three full studies, we took an iterative approach and administered large it

[Complex posttraumatic stress disorder in adults].

The term "complex posttraumatic stress disorder" (cPTSD) appeared in the scientific literature 30 years ago and has now been included in a diagnostic catalogue for the first time, namely in the International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems 11 (ICD-11) which was officially published at the beginning of 2022. This usually severely debilitating disorder often poses great challenges to treating physicians and psychotherapists in everyday clinical practice. Due to the much-debated overlap of cPTSD with borderline personality disorder (BPD), which is very high in c

Disentangle the neural correlates of attachment style in healthy individuals.

Since its development and theorisation in the 60s, attachment theory has greatly influenced both clinical and developmental psychology suggesting the existence of complex dynamics based on the relationship between an infant and its caregiver, that affects personality traits and interpersonal relationships in adulthood. Many studies have been conducted to explore the association between attachment styles and psychosocial functioning and mental health. By contrast, only a few studies have investigated the neurobiological underpinnings of attachment style, showing mixed results. Therefore, in thi

Associations of Neuroticism and Impulsivity with Binge Eating in a Nationally Representative Sample of Adolescents in the United States.

Binge eating behavior is a public health concern with serious physical and mental health consequences. Certain personality traits have been found to contribute to the development of eating disorders in clinical samples of youth, but little is known about associations between personality traits and binge eating in the general adolescent population. We examined the associations of neuroticism and impulsivity-both independently and in combination-with lifetime prevalence of binge eating, using nationally representative, cross-sectional data from the National Comorbidity Survey: Adolescent Supplem

Child maltreatment and adult psychopathology in an Irish context.

One-hundred-ninety-nine adult mental health service users were interviewed with a protocol that included the Childhood Trauma Questionnaire, the Structured Clinical Interviews for Axis I and II DSM-IV disorders, the Global Assessment of Functioning scale, the SCORE family assessment measure, the Camberwell Assessment of Need Short Appraisal Schedule, and the Readiness for Psychotherapy Index. Compared to a U.S. normative sample, Irish clinical cases had higher levels of maltreatment. Cases with comorbid axis I and II disorders reported more child maltreatment than those with axis I disorders o
