Chronic impairments of static postural stability associated with history of concussion.

Postural stability deficits are commonly observed in cases of concussion. However, the objective duration in which impairments of standing postural stability remain following a concussion is often inconclusive. The present study was conducted to determine if prior history of concussion is associated with deficits in postural stability beyond the clinical determination of recovery. It was hypothesized that concussion history would be associated with decreases in static stability compared to individuals that have never sustained a concussion. Fifty-four healthy adults were recruited based on whe

Integrative Dance for Adults with Down Syndrome: Effects on Postural Stability.

Postural stability, one's ability to maintain an upright stable position, is a crucial aspect of functional mobility and independent living. The purpose of this study was to examine if integrative dance classes have the potential to improve the postural stability in individuals with Down syndrome (DS). Utilizing a one group design, seven participants with DS were evaluated before and after a 12-week integrative dance class (ClinicalTrials.gov#NCT03660423). Postural stability was evaluated in uni- and bilateral quiet standing using a Wii Balance Board. Stability levels were measured based on ch

Two cases with postural axial tremor: Consider a genetic origin.

We present two cases with postural axial tremor predominantly involving the head, trunk, and shoulders. In the first patient, the postural tremor occurred in multiple attacks a day lasting approximately 10 min. The second patient developed a progressive tremor of his head and arms, worsened during sitting and standing. Electrophysiological supported the postural axial tremor in both patients with a varying 3-10 Hz tremor frequency between different muscles and within the same muscles at different times. Postural axial tremor is a rare and complex movement disorder. The majority of cases are ca

Electroencephalographic Study on Sensory Integration in Visually Induced Postural Sway.

A periodically reversing optic flow animation, experienced while standing, induces an involuntary sway termed visually induced postural sway (VIPS). Interestingly, VIPS is suppressed during light finger touch to a stationary object. Here, we explored whether VIPS is mediated by parietal field activity in the dorsal visual stream as well as by activity in early visual areas, as has been suggested. We performed a mobile brain/body imaging study using high-density electroencephalographic recording from human participants (11 men and 3 women) standing during exposure to periodically reversing opti

The trunk's contribution to postural control under challenging balance conditions.

BACKGROUND: The double inverted pendulum model is imprecise when applied to studies of postural control. Although multijoint analyses have improved our understanding of how balance is maintained, the exact role of the trunk remains unclear. RESEARCH QUESTIONS: What is the trunk's contribution in postural control with respect to the other joints and how do trunk muscles control trunk kinematics? METHODS: Thirty-six healthy athletes (handball, karate, long jump) performed a highly challenging balance task while the ground support was dynamically tilted in the sagittal plane. The center of forc

Management and experience of postural placement in postoperative mechanical ventilation of newborns.

BACKGROUND: Congenital diaphragmatic hernia (CDH) is a neonatal condition that mainly occurs when the abdominal organs herniate into the thorax, obstructing the development of the lungs. Postoperative neonatal breathing disorder is one of the main causes of neonatal death. This study summarizes the postoperative nursing status of 30 cases of neonatal CDH in our hospital, and explores the effect of body position in mechanical ventilation care following CDH surgery. METHODS: A total of 30 CHD children admitted in our hospital between June, 2018 and October, 2019 were included. The neonates were

Family history of associated disorders in patients with postural tachycardia syndrome.

INTRODUCTION: Postural tachycardia syndrome is more frequently being recognised in adolescents and adults. However, its pathophysiology remains undefined. We evaluated our database for patterns in family history of clinical symptoms and associated disorders in these patients. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Patients with postural tachycardia syndrome diagnosed in our clinic between 2014 and 2018 and who were less than 19 years at diagnosis were included. The history was reviewed for family members with postural tachycardia syndrome, dizziness and/or syncope, joint hypermobility with or without hypermo

Postural responses to sinusoidal modulations of viewpoint position in a virtual environment.

Visual self-motion information is known to contribute to postural control, but it is unclear precisely which aspects of visual motion information drive changes in posture. We report here results for standing humans which suggest that there is a speed of movement threshold that must be exceeded by a visual stimulus if a posture response is to be generated. We use signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) methods to measure the strength of steady-state visually evoked posture responses (SSVEPRs) to sinusoidal modulations of visual viewpoint position in a virtual environment (VE). Using threshold estimates fou…

Evaluation of postural balance in patients with obstructive sleep apnoea syndrome.

INTRODUCTION: Patients with obstructive sleep apnoea syndrome (OSAS) can be more prone to accidents due to excessive daytime sleepiness which can lead to attention deficits and thereby cause balance problems. One of the tests evaluating postural balance is static posturography (SPG). In this study, we aimed to evaluate postural balance with SPG in OSAS patients. METHODS: Patients who were referred to a sleep disorders outpatient clinic of a tertiary health care centre with snoring, daytime sleepiness or witnessed apnoea were enrolled consecutively in this cross-sectional study. They were grou

Postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome (POTS): a common but unfamiliar syndrome.

Postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome (POTS) is a condition in which a change from a supine to an upright position causes an abnormally large increase in heart rate which may be accompanied by a variety of physical complaints. We report two cases illustrating the heterogeneity of this syndrome. We give an update on the etiology of POTS, which is still poorly understood, and its overlap with other syndromes such as chronic fatigue syndrome. Clinicians should be aware of POTS, a fairly common clinical entity, that can result in significant impairments to a patient's quality of life. Lifestyl

Monitoring of cerebral oximetry in patients with postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome.

AIMS: Postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome (POTS) is a disorder of unknown aetiology characterized by orthostatic intolerance and tachycardia with diverse other symptoms, including neurocognitive deficits. Cerebral oximetry non-invasively measures cerebral tissue saturation (SctO2) and has been shown to be informative in syncope evaluation. We aimed to assess SctO2 in POTS patients and those with normal response to orthostatic provocation, relative to haemodynamic parameters and symptoms. METHODS AND RESULTS: Thirty-four patients with POTS (29.1 ± 9.5 years; 26 females) and 34 age-/sex-m

Assessing Postural Instability and Cybersickness Through Linear and Angular Displacement.

OBJECTIVE: To examine the hypothesis that constant speed is more comfortable than variable speed profiles and may minimize cybersickness. BACKGROUND: Current best practices for virtual reality (VR) content creation suggest keeping any form of acceleration as short and infrequent as possible to mitigate cybersickness. METHODS: In Experiment 1, participants experienced repetitions of simulated linear motion, and in Experiment 2, they experienced repetitions of a circular motion. Three speed profiles were tested in each experiment. Each trial lasted 2 min while standing. Cybersickness was measu

Geometric Model for the Postural Characterization in the Sagital Plane of Lumbar Raquis.

The individual's posture is the physical expression of his body. It is modified throughout life and it is determined by the particular anatomical characteristics that directly affect the biomechanics of the spine. The typing of the spinal curvature is important for the knowledge of body posture. The possibility of having a method for the systematic postural characterization of the spine is an essential objective resource in order to obtain normal or control patterns of the spinal morphology of the population. A widely accepted methodology of morphological characterization of the spine is a nec…

Postural Tachycardia Syndrome (POTS) and the GI Tract: A Primer for the Gastroenterologist.

Postural tachycardia syndrome (POTS) is one of the most common causes of orthostatic intolerance and is being increasingly recognized in clinical practice. Gastrointestinal (GI) symptoms are reported commonly in patients with POTS and pose a considerable management challenge, making it imperative that gastroenterologists be aware of this condition and its GI comorbidities. Although the evidence presented herein does not prove causation, it does support an association between GI symptoms, GI dysmotility, and POTS. At present, the evaluation and treatment of GI symptoms in patients with POTS rem

Postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome: clinical presentation, aetiology and management.

Postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome (POTS) is a variant of cardiovascular autonomic disorder characterized by an excessive heart rate increase on standing and orthostatic intolerance. POTS affects younger individuals 15-45 years old with a distinct female predominance (≈80%). The prevalence ranges between 0.2% and 1.0% in developed countries. The onset of POTS is typically precipitated by immunological stressors such as viral infection, vaccination, trauma, pregnancy, surgery or psychosocial stress. The most common complaints are dizziness, weakness, rapid heartbeat and palpitation on st
