BACKGROUND: Pemphigus vulgaris (PV) is an antibody-mediated autoimmune blistering disease of the skin and mucous membrane recognized in humans and several domestic animals, including dogs. The autoimmune target in human PV has been identified as desmoglein (Dsg) 3, a desmosomal cell-cell adhesion molecule, whereas the autoimmune target in canine PV has not yet been identified clearly.
OBJECTIVE: To obtain and sequence the mRNA for the entire coding region of canine Dsg3, and to investigate whether the serum antibodies in human and canine PV recognize the extracellular domains of canine Dsg3.

Farmer's lung disease (FLD) is common in the east of France. In the absence of the primary recognized FLD agent, Saccharopolyspora rectivirgula, its etiology remains unknown. A prospective case-control study was performed to find the etiology of FLD in this area. Eleven patients were matched with 11 healthy control farmers. OBJECTIVE: To study the association of maternal antibodies to Ro(SSA) and/or La(SSB) with isolated complete congenital heart block (CCHB) in children according to the child's age at detection.

One hundred and six asthma patients were studied in Zaria in the Nigerian savanna region. This group resembled hospital attenders in general in containing a disproportionately large number of immigrants from southern Nigeria and students undergoing higher education.
