Predictors of risky sex of young men after release from prison.

A longitudinal study of demographic and behavioural characteristics associated with risky sexual behaviours of young men after release from prison. One hundred and six men were interviewed in prison and at one week and six months after release. Overall, 37% reported a previous sexually transmitted disease (STD) diagnosis. In the 30 days before incarceration, 33% had had sex with a risky partner, and 59% had had multiple female sex partners. After release, 38 (36%) men reported having had risky sex (>or=2 female sex partners and unprotected vaginal sex): 12 (13%) at one week and 31 (34%) at six

Serious mental disorder in 23000 prisoners: a systematic review of 62 surveys.

BACKGROUND: About 9 million people are imprisoned worldwide, but the number with serious mental disorders (psychosis, major depression, and antisocial personality disorder) is unknown. We did a systematic review of surveys on such disorders in general prison populations in western countries. METHODS: We searched for psychiatric surveys that were based on interviews of unselected prison populations and included diagnoses of psychotic illnesses or major depression within the previous 6 months, or a history of any personality disorder. We did computer-assisted searches, scanned reference lists,

Measuring level of function in mentally III prison inmates: a preliminary study.

The need to portray accurately the level of functioning and severity of psychiatric symptoms among mentally ill offenders (MIOs) is paramount from several perspectives. The prison environment may cast aspersions on the reliability and validity of commonly used functional assessment tools. In addition, these tools do not capture environment-specific areas that may be of interest to the courts, clinicians, community mental health centers, and other correctional facilities. Male MIOs (n = 61) who had been treated for at least three months in a (male) Washington state prison mental health program

Random mandatory drugs testing of prisoners: a biassed means of gathering information.

BACKGROUND: Our objective was to develop and test a methodology for inferring the percentage of prisoners currently using opiates from the percentage of prisoners testing positive for opiates in random mandatory drugs testing (rMDT). METHODS: The study used results from Willing Anonymous Salivary HIV (WASH) studies (1994-6) in six adult Scottish prisons, and surveys (1994-5 and 1997) in 14 prisons in England and Wales. For Scottish prisons, the percentage of prisoners currently using opiates was determined by assuming, with varying empirical support, that: current users of opiates in prison w…

Seroprevalence of HIV, HCV and syphilis in Brazilian prisoners: preponderance of parenteral transmission.

Between November 1993 and April 1994, our physicians' team interviewed and took blood samples of 631 prisoners randomly drawn from the largest prison of South America, which counted about 4700 inmates at that time. The interview consisted of questions related to risk behaviour for HIV infection, and the subjects were asked to provide blood for serological tests for HIV, hepatitis C and syphilis. Our main purpose was to investigate the relationship between HCV and injecting drug use as related to HIV seropositivity. Participation in the study was voluntary and confidentiality was guaranteed. Comorbidity and course of psychiatric disorders in a community sample of former prisoners of war.

OBJECTIVE: The authors assessed DSM-III-R disorders among American former prisoners of war. Comorbidity, time of onset, and the relationship of trauma severity to complicated versus uncomplicated posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) were examined. METHOD: A community sample (N=262) of men exposed to combat and imprisonment was assessed by clinicians using the Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-III-R. RESULTS: The rates of comorbidity among the men with PTSD were lower than rates from community samples assessed by lay interviewers. Over one-third of the cases of lifetime PTSD were uncompli

[The Stockholm project: drunken drivers are given supervision instead of prison sentences].

There is a need to compile a national database on drunken driving, since experience from other countries is not necessarily applicable to Swedish conditions. Legislation, drinking habits, and public attitudes to drinking and driving differ markedly from country to country. Since 1990, the driving licence unit of the Magnus Huss Clinic has been collaborating with a probation office unit of the National Prisons and Probation Administration and the Offender Aid Society on a non-institutional drunk driving program of at least one year's duration, often linked with several years' follow-up. The art…

The effects of peer education on STD and AIDS knowledge among prisoners in Mozambique.

The study was designed to evaluate the impact of education on AIDS knowledge among prison inmates in Maputo, Mozambique. A 6-month follow-up study was carried out in 1993 among 300 prisoners. A knowledge, attitudes, and practices questionnaire regarding AIDS and STD was administered to each subject as part of the intake medical examination and after an educational intervention provided by 30 prisoner 'activists'. A large proportion of prisoners had high risk behaviours (65% had 2 or more sexual partners per month and 39% had a history of STD) and low AIDS knowledge at incarceration. Statistica

'Prisoners of their own feebleness': women, nerves and Western medicine--a historical overview.

The medical conceptualization, diagnosis and treatment of nervous disorders has been greatly affected by gender ideologies. A survey of recent scholarship reveals that gender ideologies still largely inform the illness-labeling, medical diagnosis and management of woman's physiology and, in particular, her nerves. Historically the names of the specific 'diseases' have evolved from demonic possession, tarantism, hysteralgia, hystero-epilepsy, neurasthenia, hypochondriasis and nervousness to neurosis, but several key features remain static. The overriding common features of these ailments are th

[Treatment of opiate weaning by clonidine in prison (evaluation based on 36 patients)].

The authors have used Clonidine for withdrawal from opiates of prisoners. About detoxification of 36 men entering into prison and published studies, they show that Clonidine is an efficacy and safe treatment. Clonidine induced hypotensia is not considered problematic.

Clinical and subclinical nutritional neurological damage in former war prisoners of the Japanese.

Five former war prisoners of the Japanese were clinically evaluated and intensively investigated for evidence of neurological disease. On release from imprisonment 36 years previously they were known to have a single neurological problem each, attributable to nutritional damage to the nervous system (four had optic atrophy and one a peripheral neuropathy). The present assessment confirmed these persisting neurological problems; but in addition two patients were found to have extrapyramidal and one pyramidal disease, one was demented, and two had evidence of non-dominant hemisphere damage on ps

Structural violence, decolonization and harm reduction in prisons: a critical perspective on opioid use disorders, gender and race.

Substance use remains highly prevalent among prison populations. The war on drugs represents an ethical failure that has not achieved its in … ality by lowering the risk of overdose after release. Combating corruption, both inside and outside prisons, must be considered a priority. If the prevalence of drug use among incarcerated populations continues to rise, why has there been no reform of a policy long recognized as ineffective and profoundly harmful to prisoners? Who benefits from this?

Systemic readiness and policy gaps for metabolic syndrome care in botswana prisons: A national WHO building blocks evaluation.

BACKGROUND: Metabolic syndrome is a growing global health challenge, affecting one in four adults worldwide, with prevalence in sub-Saharan Africa estimated at 20-30%. In Botswana, urban prevalence is 27%, reflecting a high burden of NCDs. Prisoners are particularly vulnerable due to overcrowding, poor nutrition, sedentary confinement, and limited access to health services. OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the systemic capacity, effectiveness, and readiness of Botswana's prison health care delivery mechanisms in managing metabolic syndrome, focusing on diagnostic, treatment, and continuity-of-care pro
