Large-bowel obstruction caused by cancer: a prospective study.

Patients with obstructing large-bowel cancer may be treated by primary tumour resection or the conventional staged tumour resection, and a prospective study comparing these two treatments was carried out. The post-operative outcome in 174 patients (of whom 90 underwent primary and 47 staged tumour resection) showed that the overall mortality was similar in both groups but that the duration of hospital stay in patients who underwent primary tumour resection was half that of those who underwent staged tumour resection. The mortality for primary tumour resection, however, was unexpectedly high fo

Prospective study on streptococcal pharyngitis among a town population.

A one-year-round study on pharyngitis incidence among the general population of a town (24,300 inhabitants) was carried out. All patients, with pharyngitis who visited health centres were examined clinically and mcirobiologically. The overall pharyngitis incidence rate and the streptococcal pharyngitis incidence rate were, respectively, 8.3 and 3.9 cases per 100 population. Age-related incidence was highest in the group of 5-10 years, seasonal incidence was highest in autumn. Clinical diagnoses made preliminary to bacteriological examination were correct in only a half of the streptococcal pha

A prospective study of mitral valvular prolapse in young men.

A cardiac history, a physical examination, an electrocardiogram, phonocardiograms in the supine and standing positions, and an M-mode echocardiogram were obtained in 100 randomly selected, presumably healthy, male medical students (mean age, 26 years). Four percent met standard echocardiographic criteria for mitral valvular prolapse. No midsystolic clicks or late systolic murmurs were appreciated in this group, and none complained of chest pain or palpitations. To elucidate further the clinical implication of the echocardiographic pattern of mitral valvular prolapse, 24-hour ambulatory ECGs, m

Coxsackie and mumpsvirus infection in a prospective study of acute pancreatitis.

A prospective study of 116 patients with acute pancreatitis included routine screening for evidence of viral infection. Five patients (all female) exhibited significant rising antibody titres to Coxsackie B or mumpsvirus, while none of the remaining 111 patients did. Diarrhoea was a prodromal feature of the pancreatitis in those patients with evidence of viral disease. Screening patients with acute pancreatitis for Coxsackie B and mumpsvirus infections is worthwhile in the identification of aetiological factors and may minimise protracted biliary investigations. The incidence of "idiopathic" a

Urinary infection in boys.A three-year prospective study.

73 boys who presented to their general practitioners over the course of one year with symptoms of urinary-tract infection and were found to have bacteriuria were referred to a three-year prospective study. This included clinical and radiological investigations and monitoring of the preputial flora and midstream-urine culture at monthyl intervals. 22 (30%) of the boys had radiological abnormalities of the urinary tract; 6 had pyelonephritic changes. Only 2 required urinary-tract surgery. Several findings of the study suggest that the natural history of the disease in boys is different from that

A prospective study to determine the efficacy of antibiotics in acute pancreatitis.

This study is a double "blind" prospective evaluation of the efficacy of antibiotics (Ampicillin) in the treatment of acute alcohol-induced and idiopathic pancreatitis. Fifty-eight patients with acute pancreatitis were randomly divided into antibiotic and non-antibiotic treatment groups. The two groups were comparable clinically at the onset of the study and other than for antibiotics received identical therapy. The patients without antibiotics had a clinical course equal or slightly more favorable than the antibiotic treatment group in all parameters examined. These data indicate that prophyl

A prospective study of drugs and pregnancy. 4. Miscellaneous drugs.

The results are presented of a prospective study on drug use during pregnancy involving antibiotics, analgesic drugs and iron and vitamin preparations. The study was conducted in Malmö between 1963 and 1965. No unfavourable effect of the use of antibiotics, mainly penicillin and sulphonamides, could be demonstrated. Among 15 women who had an infant with hypospadias, three had used penicillin during the first trimester, but this may well be coincidental. Analgesic drug use shows a variability which resembles that previously described for psychopharmaca. No effect on the malformation rate or inf

Painful Sexual poSiTions in endometriosis patients (the PSST! Study): a prospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Dyspareunia is a common symptom in women with endometriosis, yet its positional dependency is not routinely assessed in clinical practice. AIM: To investigate the relationship between endometriosis and positional dyspareunia, identifying the most painful sexual positions and correlating them with lesion location. METHODS: In this prospective monocentric study, women with dyspareunia aged 18 or older undergoing laparoscopic surgery for endometriosis were recruited. Participants completed a preoperative questionnaire assessing dyspareunia and positional dependency. Intraoperative f

Psychiatric symptoms in children and adolescents with Graves' disease: A retrospective study and a prospective study.

BACKGROUND: The relationship between Grave's disease (GD) and psychiatric symptoms is unclear in children and adolescents. Assessment of psychiatric symptoms in GD is important, especially when they occur in the absence of classic symptoms such as sweating and diffuse goiter. The present two studies aimed to assess the frequency and clinical characteristics of psychiatric symptoms in children and adolescents with GD. METHODS: Study 1 was a multicentric, retrospective study while Study 2 was a monocentric, prospective, observational study. In Study 1, the participants were 135 children and ado

Depression in patients with severe somatic disease - study protocol of the prospective DESIE-study.

BACKGROUND: Depression is a big health concern and a leading cause of disability worldwide that is inadequately addressed. Severe somatic illnesses are often associated with psychological distress that can reach the level of a depressive disorder requiring treatment. Depression as a comorbidity is linked with a poor quality of life and noncompliance to treatment in these patients, which may lead to increased use of health services. Information on the frequency and the disease course of depression in patients with severe somatic diseases and the need for inpatient treatment and subsequent treat

Study of pediatric appendicitis scores and management strategies: A prospective observational feasibility study.

OBJECTIVE: The objective was to investigate the feasibility of prospectively validating multiple clinical prediction scores (CPSs) for pediatric appendicitis in an Australian pediatric emergency department (ED). METHODS: A literature search was conducted to identify potential CPSs and a single-center prospective observational feasibility study was performed between November 2022 and May 2023 to evaluate the performance of identified CPSs. Children 5-15 years presenting with acute right-sided or generalized abdominal pain and clinician suspicion of appendicitis were included. CPSs were calcula
