Racial disparities in Black men with prostate cancer: A literature review.

Black men are disproportionately affected by prostate cancer (PCa), with earlier presentation, more aggressive disease, and higher mortality rates versus White men. Furthermore, Black men have less access to PCa treatment and experience longer delays between diagnosis and treatment. In this review, the authors discuss the factors contributing to racial disparities and present solutions to improve access to care and increase clinical trial participation among Black men with PCa. Racial disparities observed among Black men with PCa are multifaceted, evolving from institutional racism. Cultural f…

Rural Indigenous Experiences of Healthcare Services: A Scoping Review.

INTRODUCTION: Indigenous peoples experience significant health inequities compared to non-Indigenous peoples. The reasons for this are multi … ng impacted the healthcare experiences of Indigenous peoples: distance to care; quality of care and racism; support from and impact on, whānau (family); health professional communication and knowledge sharing; and Indigenous solutions and holistic care. Comfort in a cross-sector care delivery model to address birth inequities: Learnings from San Francisco's Pregnancy Village.

INTRODUCTION: Comfort is a key factor in physical and mental health, influencing overall well-being. Though once seen as peripheral to the patient care experience, it is now recognized as a critical outcome. For Black and other historically minoritized birthing individuals-who face racism, disproportionally higher morbidities, and unequal care-comfort is key to a safe, positive pregnancy experience. Innovative, community-driven models designed to improve comfort are therefore needed. San Francisco's Pregnancy Village (PV) is a novel, cross-sector care delivery model providing a one-stop shop f…

St. Louis enhancing engagement and retention (STEER) in HIV/AIDS care: a participatory intersectional needs assessment for intervention and implementation planning.

BACKGROUND: Missouri is one of seven priority states identified by the Ending the HIV Epidemic Initiative, and St. Louis contains almost half of the people living with HIV (PLWH) in Missouri. As St. Louis has a marked history of structural racism and economic inequities, we utilized the Intersectionality Based Policy Analysis (IBPA) framework to guide a participatory needs assessment for planning and program development. METHODS: The planning team included researchers, the lead implementer from our community partner, and two community representatives, and had biweekly 60-90 min meetings for 1…

Yoga and Mindfulness for Social-Emotional Development and Resilience in 3-5 Year-Old Children: Non-Randomized, Controlled Intervention.

BACKGROUND: Early childhood is the key life course period for development of social-emotional skills, providing the foundation for school readiness and resilience in later life. Age-appropriate yoga and mindfulness programs may contribute to the development of critical skills in children. Young children from minoritized communities that face structural racism and health disparities may benefit from programs that support social-emotional development and contribute to future academic success. Systematic reviews of yoga interventions for young children have indicated the potential for effectivene…

Lessons learned from community engagement regarding phylodynamic research with molecular HIV surveillance data.

INTRODUCTION: The widespread implementation of molecular HIV surveillance (MHS) has resulted in an increased discussion about the ethical, h … ty by race/ethnicity and the importance of considering the broader context of stigma and structural racism. We ultimately decided the potential harms of publishing our study-perpetuating racialized stigma about men who have sex with men and eroding the trust between phylogenetics researchers and communities of people living with HIV-outweighed the potent …

BACKGROUND: Preceded by a national media campaign, in May 2020, England switched to a soft opt-out system of organ donation which rests on t … liefs and end of life cultural norms, understanding and acceptance of brain-stem death and systemic racism. There is a growing recognition in the fields of public health and medicine that social determinants of health (SDOH) play a key role in driv … of colour who already experience structural challenges including discrimination, disinvestment, and racism. The U.S. war on drugs has subjected millions to criminalisation, incarceration, and lifelong criminal records, disrupting or altogether eliminating their access to adequate resources and supports to live healthy lives. Management of bleeding from gastric fundal varices.

INTRODUCTION: This article describes the use and effectiveness of the participatory action research (PAR) framework to better understand community members' perceptions and risks of pandemic influenza. In 2009, the H1N1 influenza pandemic affected Indigenous populations more than non-Indigenous populations in Oceania and the Americas. Higher prevalence of comorbidities (diabetes, obesity, asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease) as well as pregnancy in Indigenous communities may have contributed to the higher risks of severe disease. Social disparity, institutionalised racism within he…

Testing the effectiveness of Family Spirit Strengths (FSS) - a culturally informed intervention designed to prevent mental health and substance misuse for indigenous families through home visiting.

BACKGROUND: Families represent the foundation of health for many Indigenous communities. Yet, Indigenous women, particularly women of the age who are starting families, face profound challenges related to mental health and substance use. These challenges are rooted in historical trauma, ongoing discrimination, systemic racism, and chronic underfunding of mental health and substance use services, and result in significant gaps in access to care. Family-based home visiting has the potential to address multiple types of mental health and substance use concerns in a way that is more accessible and…

Racial/Ethnic and Nativity Disparities in Gestational Diabetes Mellitus, United States 2018-2021.

BACKGROUND: Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) is associated with adverse pregnancy and birth complications. Asian populations have the highest risk of GDM, with even greater risk among foreign-born (FB) residents. Socio-political factors, such as heightened anti-Asian racism and travel restrictions during COVID19 may have further increased their risk of GDM. Our study sought to examine the associations between race/ethnicity, nativity status, and GDM rate and changes during COVID19. METHODS: We used the US National Center for Health Statistics natality administrative data (N = 14,219,719). …

An epigenome-wide analysis of DNA methylation, racialized and economic inequities, and air pollution.

BACKGROUND: DNA methylation (DNAm) provides a plausible mechanism by which adverse exposures become embodied and contribute to health inequi … NCLUSIONS: Overall, this work suggests that DNAm is a biological mechanism through which structural racism and air pollution (of which distribution of exposure is inequitable) become embodied and may lead to health inequities. Due to the extensive range of exposures we tested, further replication in additional studies and other tissues is warranted.
