Does the interval between fractions matter in the range of 4-8 h in radiotherapy? A study of acute and late human skin reactions.

Accelerated radiotherapy has the potential to increase local control of rapidly growing tumours. To determine the necessary time interval for complete repair of sublethal damage in normal tissue in a clinical situation, we have compared the acute and late skin reactions with 8 and 24 h between fractions, using the same dose per fraction and total dose. Forty-nine breast cancer patients participated in this study, and received bilateral parasternal irradiation to 50 Gy with 2 Gy per fraction as part of their adjuvant postoperative radiotherapy. The time interval between daily fractions was alwa

Factors affecting the development of skin cancer after scalp irradiation.

A nested case control study of persons who developed skin cancer after scalp irradiation in childhood revealed two risk factors for the appearance of radiation-induced skin cancer: (a) an apparently higher radiation dose delivered inadvertently, manifested by a higher prevalence of alopecia and radiation dermatitis (RR = 3.4; CI 1.3-8.8); (b) a more frequent exposure to the sun, manifested by summer sunbathing (RR = 2.6; CI 1.1-6.1). These findings may have certain implications with regard to the understanding of radiation-induced cancer, after low-dose radiation exposure, in general.

[Myocutaneous island flap of the lower trapezius. Its value in facial oncology practice].

Among the numerous musculo-cutaneous flaps, the lower trapezius island appears an interesting procedure for punctual indications. The authors report their experience in utilisation of this flap for reconstruction of defects in auricular area, and in the buccal cavity. They point out some practical problems encountered when raising the flap.

Radiation effects on the external auditory canal.

Radiation is used to treat many head and neck tumors, and of necessity the temporal bone is sometimes included in the paths of radiation. We studied the histopathology of the external auditory canal in 13 temporal bones from 10 patients who had undergone irradiation for head and neck tumors. The pathologic changes noted could be divided into: bony changes, and soft tissue changes. Bony changes manifested were those of resorption, fibrosis, empty lacunae, and sequestration. There were five soft tissue changes: the formation of a secondary cholesteatoma, ulceration of the lining epithelium with

Residual radiation damage in the mouse foot after exposure to argon ions and retreatment with X rays.

The results of radiation treatment as visible residual damage are reported for acute skin reaction and foot deformity in mice exposed to argon ions. Two groups of 40 mice each were exposed to argon ions at the plateau and peak center of a 10-cm-wide Bragg peak to a fixed dose of 1200 and 1300 rad, respectively. A third group of 40 mice was exposed to 1750 rad of 250-kVp X rays while the fourth group was kept as controls. The acute skin reactions were scored for 60 days and foot deformity at 8 months after exposure. These mice were reexposed 8 months after the first exposure to graded doses of

Acute Toxicity and Cosmesis Following a Tumor Bed Boost After Whole Breast Moderate Dose Hypofractionation.

PURPOSE: Randomized evidence suggests that tumor bed boost improves local control following whole breast radiation therapy (WBRT) but may lead to more acute and late toxicity. However, little data are available about toxicity in real world practice from a tumor bed boost delivered after WBRT, particularly following moderate dose hypofractionation (MH). We evaluated acute toxicity and cosmesis effects associated with use of a boost after MH-WBRT in a large prospective cohort. METHODS AND MATERIALS: This analysis includes women undergoing adjuvant MH-WBRT without regional nodal irradiation, pro

Efficacy of Esomeprazole Cream in Preventing Radiation-Induced Dermatitis in Cancer Patients.

CONTEXT: Prevention of radiation-induced dermatitis (RID) and reduction of its severity can improve outcomes for cancer patients undergoing radiotherapy. OBJECTIVES: This randomized, placebo-controlled clinical trial investigated the efficacy and safety of 2% esomeprazole cream in preventing acute RID in patients with head and neck cancer. METHODS: In the first phase, 2% esomeprazole cream was developed and its physical, sensory, and chemical properties were evaluated. In the second phase, 36 patients with head and neck cancer meeting the inclusion and exclusion criteria were randomly assign

Exosomes derived from adipose-derived stem cells alleviate acute radiation-induced dermatitis through up-regulating hyaluronic acid synthase 1 expression.

BACKGROUND: Acute radiation-induced dermatitis refers to skin lesions that usually appear within 90 days of the start of radiotherapy. Although various treatments are available, none have proven fully effective. Exosomes produced by adipose-derived stem cells play crucial roles in enhancing cell regeneration, promoting angiogenesis, regulating inflammation and remodeling the extracellular matrix. Hyaluronic acid, a major extracellular matrix component, is synthesized by hyaluronic acid synthase, with hyaluronic acid synthase 1 being particularly critical for skin repair. This study aimed to in
