Surgery for rectal cancer has advanced greatly over the past decade. Our knowledge of total mesorectal excision has led to improved oncologic outcomes. The concept of extralevator abdomino-perineal resection shows promise for reducing recurrence rates in tumors of the low rectum and anal canal. Once popular, local excision of rectal tumors has now been shown to have largely unacceptable recurrence rates. Primary mucinous adenocarcinoma is a rare malignancy of the anus (3% of anal cancers), the pathogenesis of which is better understood by immunohistochemistry. We reviewed cases of primary mucinous adenocarcinoma of the anus from 2000 to 2009 in the Hepatogastroenterology Department of the University Hospital Centre of Marrakech. Malignant lymphoma in colorectal location represents a rare involvement and very exceptional reason for elective surgery. The case of mantle cell lymphoma--mantle cell lymphoma-MCL, even with caecal and rectal involvement has been described and progressed on despite several previous chemotherapy regiments. Rectal lesion caused rectal syndrome and was the reason for surgery. All intestinal symptoms disappeared at once after resection of rectum (and right colectomy). The case report reminds of important aspects of multimodal treatment and stress the role of surgery in special cases.

An 11-year-old female American Cocker Spaniel was presented with a rectal mass that protruded through the anus. Cytologically, the mass was composed of neoplastic round cells consistent with an extramedullary plasmacytoma. OBJECTIVE: To clarify anatomical basis of autonomic nerve-preserving radical resection for rectal cancer.

We present a case of villous adenoma of the rectum, associated with severe fluid imbalance in a 69 year-old, previously healthy woman. Severe dehydration with hyponatraemia, hypokalaemia, acidosis/alkalosis and watery diarrhoea is typical. Clinical presentation may include fatigue, confusion, convulsions or coma. Intensive rehydration is the primary intervention, and causal treatment is always surgery. Normally full recovery is achieved.

Two cases of submucosal colonic lipomas presenting as rectal prolapse are described. Both of them required resection by laparotomy. Colonic lipomas are a uncommon entity and they have not been documented as a cause of rectal prolapse.

Micronucleus frequencies were analysed in an X-irradiated human melanoma cell line and in untreated rectal carcinoma cells. A 37-year-old man with a 30-year history of recurrent anorectal ulceration developed a hemangiosarcoma of the rectum. This diagnosis was made based on histology and immunocytochemistry. We believe this is the fifth reported case of hemangiosarcoma of the rectum and is another example of a rare granulation tissue sarcoma.

An adaptation of the Papillon technique was developed in which a superficial x-ray machine was used for treatment of small superficially invasive rectal carcinomas. Modification of the proctoscope-treatment cone apparatus, including addition of a fiberoptic scope, allows confirmation of accurate cone placement throughout the entire treatment. There is no personnel exposure to radiation. Measured physics beam characteristics are clinically comparable to those reported for the Papillon treatment beam.
