A Rare Case of Sequential Contralateral Tubal Pregnancies.

Bilateral tubal ectopic pregnancies are the rarest form of extrauterine pregnancy, with an incidence higher in women who are undergoing ovulation induction or assisted reproductive techniques. With an unpredictable clinical course and similar presentation to unilateral ectopic pregnancies, it is important to explore the possibility of bilateral tubal pregnancies with known risk factors. Early recognition is essential to prevent morbidity. We report a case of a 26-year-old gravida 3 para 2 female patient who presented to the emergency department with right lower pelvic pain and vaginal bleeding

"Civil unrest does not stop ovulation": women's prenatal and family planning services in a 1960s Detroit neighborhood clinic.

In 1965, Nancy Milio established a prenatal and family planning clinic in Detroit, Michigan, to address health disparities and limited access to care among low-income, African American, urban women. Women's health disparities persist today nationally and internationally. Using historical methods, this research analyzes how Milio provided women's health services in the context of the social and political environment. Milio empowered neighborhood women to direct, plan, and participate in the care they received. Successful methods to address disparities in access to family and planning and prenat

A novel mathematical model of seasonality in Oropouche virus transmission in Amazonas, Brazil.

Oropouche virus (OROV) is a vector-borne arbovirus that has caused more than 500,000 infections across South America, Central America, and the Caribbean. Its primary vector, the midge species Culicoides paraensis, acquires the virus from wild reservoir hosts and transmits it to humans during blood feeding. As outbreaks within the Amazon basin continue to occur and confirmed cases steadily increase, a proper understanding of the interplay between climatic variables, vector behavior, and OROV transmission is needed to develop effective public health interventions. In this paper, we develop a nov

A Rare Massive Seromucinous Cystadenoma of the Ovary in a 26-Year-Old Female Persisting for 9 Years: A Case Report.

Giant ovarian tumors (GOTs) are uncommon ovary neoplasms with no universally accepted definition. They are typically noncancerous, with a mucinous subtype being the most common characteristic. Epithelial ovarian tumors are classified by cell type into serous, endometrioid, clear cell, mucinous, seromucinous, or transitional. Seromucinous cystadenomas are largely asymptomatic and can present with massive dimensions in late diagnoses, especially in low-to-middle-income regions. In this case, a 26-year-old nulliparous Arab woman presented with a giant ovarian cyst in her reproductive age, undiagn

Triple-negative ovarian apocrine carcinoma arising in a giant mature cystic teratoma: Case Report and Case Review.

BACKGROUND: Mature cystic teratoma (MCT) of the ovary is one of the most common benign ovarian neoplasms in women of reproductive age. Malignant transformation is rare, occurring in approximately 1-2% of cases, and transformation into apocrine carcinoma is exceptionally uncommon. To date, only four such cases have been reported. CASE PRESENTATION: We describe a 68-year-old woman with a giant ovarian tumor that had been slowly growing for over 40 years. Imaging revealed a 35 cm cystic mass, consistent with malignant degeneration and serum CA-125 was elevated (559 U/mL). The patient underwent e

Update on Management of Incidental Findings Seen on Imaging Studies of the Abdomen and Pelvis.

Incidental findings (IFs) are findings on imaging studies obtained for indications unrelated to the IF. IFs may represent clinically important lesions such as malignancy. However, the vast majority are benign with no clinical relevance. IFs can lead to unnecessary follow-up imaging, procedures, and iatrogenic complications, resulting in significant financial and psychologic burden to patients and the health care system. To address this, the American College of Radiology released a series of white papers that provide management guidelines for a variety of IFs in different organs. Since the orig

Swyer syndrome complicated by rapidly progressive invasive ovarian dysgerminoma with bladder and rectal direct invasion: a rare case report.

A 16-year-old patient with a female social gender was admitted because of "a pelvic mass detected for one year", accompanied by primary amenorrhea and poorly developed secondary sexual characteristics. Laboratory tests after admission showed elevated levels of follicle-stimulating hormone and luteinizing hormone, decreased estradiol level, and increased levels of β-human chorionic gonadotropin and carbohydrate antigen 125. Imaging examinations suggested multiple masses in the bilateral adnexal regions and abdominopelvic cavity. Karyotype analysis showed 46, XY. Exploratory laparotomy was perfo

The role of cannabinoid agonists and antagonists on folliculogenesis and evolutionary events in the mouse ovary.

OBJECTIVES: Cannabinoids, derivatives of Cannabis sativa L., can activate the endocannabinoid system via two endogenous receptors, CB1 and CB2. This system is crucial in regulating folliculogenesis, fertility, and reproductive function. This study investigated the potential effects of cannabinoid agonists and antagonists on ovarian health and function in female mice. MATERIALS AND METHODS: 80 NMRI mice were divided into 10 groups. Treatment groups received CB1 or CB2 agonists, antagonists, or their combinations for five days. The animals were then sacrificed, the ovaries were excised and weig

"She was totally desperate": understanding the pathway to abortion in Germany through a qualitative study among service providers in Berlin and Brandenburg.

Access to abortion is recognised as a key component of the right to healthcare. Yet, to this day, abortion in Germany without medical or criminal indication is illegal and treated under the penal code, although not punished if taking place in the first 12 gestational weeks and following a formalised process including mandatory counselling. Our study aimed to critically examine the pathway to abortion necessitated by the current criminalising legal framework in Germany. We conducted a qualitative study between November 2023 and July 2024, using 17 interviews to capture views of abortion-related

Evaluation of multiple ventricular septal defects using three-dimensional reconstruction models†.

OBJECTIVES: Although there has been rapid development in the field of three-dimensional morphological analyses of congenital heart disease, with the three-dimensional volume-rendered images providing visualization of the external vascular anatomy, the precise reproduction of 'Swiss-cheese' ventricular septum is not well established. We created three-dimensional printed models and computer graphics based on multi-slice computed tomography of patients with complex multiple ventricular septal defects for surgical decision planning of this difficult cardiac defect. METHODS: Seven patients with co

"I can't help them like I used to": Evolving prenatal genetic counseling practices in a post-Roe U.S.

This exploratory empirical study documents how prenatal genetic counseling practice was evolving one year after the 2022 Supreme Court decision overturning the constitutional right to abortion in Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health Organization. This study captures a moment when prenatal genetic counselors, clinicians who provide education and counseling about genetic and other fetal health issues before and during pregnancy, were navigating new state abortion restrictions. Qualitative interviews were conducted with 27 genetic counselors in 15 states representing a range of abortion regulations. T

Peritoneal Inclusion Cyst Mimicking Adrenal Pathology in a Young Man: A Rare Case Report.

Peritoneal inclusion cysts (PICs) are rare, benign, and fluid-filled lesions most commonly seen in women of reproductive age, typically associated with a history of abdominal surgery, trauma, or inflammatory conditions. Occurrence in males, especially without predisposing factors, is exceedingly uncommon and can pose significant diagnostic challenges due to their nonspecific clinical and radiological features. We report the case of a 19-year-old male who presented with chronic right lower quadrant abdominal pain persisting for 4 months. Initial sonography revealed an 80 × 50 mm cystic lesion b

Post-Roe v Wade psychiatry: legal, clinical, and ethical challenges in psychiatry under abortion bans.

In recent history, the world has witnessed a trend towards liberalization of abortion laws driven by an increasing understanding of the negative personal and public health consequences of criminalizing abortion. By contrast, several countries have recently implemented restrictive reproductive laws, joining the 112 countries where access to abortion care is banned completely or with narrow exceptions. On June 24, 2022, the US Supreme Court ruling in Dobbs v Jackson Women's Health Organization overturned its landmark decisions in Roe v Wade that established abortion until the point of viability
