Retinal degeneration induced by N-methyl-N-nitrosourea in Syrian golden hamsters.

BACKGROUND: The sequential retinal changes in Syrian golden hamsters induced by N-methyl-N-nitrosourea (MNU) have not been studied. METHODS: Female hamsters received a single intraperitoneal injection of 90 mg/kg MNU at 50 days of age, and the retina was examined light and electron microscopically, immunohistochemically and by the TdT-mediated dUTP-digoxigenin nick end labeling (TUNEL) method until 20 weeks after the treatment. RESULTS: The retinal changes were as follows: (1) Photoreceptor apoptosis occurred 1 day after the treatment and resulted in photoreceptor loss at day 7. During the d

Myopia Alters the Structural Organization of the Retinal Vasculature, GFAP-Positive Glia, and Ganglion Cell Layer Thickness.

To describe the effect of myopic eye growth on the structure and distribution of astrocytes, vasculature, and retinal nerve fiber layer thickness, which are critical for inner retinal tissue homeostasis and survival. Astrocyte and capillary distribution, retinal nerve fiber (RNFL), and ganglion cell layer (GCL) thicknesses were assessed using immunochemistry and spectral domain optical coherence tomography on eleven retinas of juvenile common marmosets (Callithrix Jacchus), six of which were induced with lens-induced myopia (refraction, Rx: -7.01 ± 1.8D). Five untreated age-matched juvenile ma

Research Progress of the Application of Hypothermia in the Eye.

Hypothermia is widely used in the medical field to protect organs or tissues from damage. Different research fields have different explanations of the protection mechanism of hypothermia. Hypothermia is also widely used in the field of ophthalmology, for example, in the eye bank, the preservation of corneal tissue and the preservation of the eyeball. Low temperature can also be applied to some ophthalmic diseases, such as allergic conjunctivitis, retinal ischemia, and retinal hypoxia. It is used to relieve eye symptoms or reduce tissue damage. Hypothermic techniques have important applications

Microvasculature of the rat eye: scanning electron microscopy of vascular corrosion casts.

Methylmethacrylate castings of the eye microvasculature were prepared from 10 Spargue-Dawley rats and studied by electron microscopy. The choroidal arterioles are larger in diameter than retinal arterioles, and have a shorter course to choroidal capillaries than retinal arterioles to retinal capillaries. Retinal capillaries are extremely thin in diameter and form a sparse retinal capillary network. The choriocapillaris is large and sinusoid-like, forming a compactly arranged network in the choroid. These differences in the microvasculature between the choroid and retina help explain the differ

The pathogenesis of retinopathy of prematurity as it relates to surgical treatment.

Our current surgical treatment for threshold retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) is based upon three concepts which emerged from morphologic and biochemical study of 250 pairs of whole eye donations obtained over a ten year period. 1) Spindle cells normally migrate and canalize to form inner retinal vessels, but when stressed, spindle cells secrete angiogenic factors. The clinical implication is that transretinal cryotherapy to the avascular retina is efficacious because it obliterates spindle cells. The number and timing of cryosessions are determined by the migration and kinetics of spindle cel…

Schisis contributes to necrosis in experimental HSV-1 retinitis.

Injection of the KOS strain of herpes simplex virus type 1 into the anterior chamber of one eye of a BALB/c mouse produces bilateral retinal … underlying ganglion cell layer. This separation resulted in avulsion of Mueller cell footplates and retinal vessels, hemorrhage into the schisis cavity and disruption of the underlying retinal architecture. The schisis began focally on day 8 or 9 post-inoculation, and the entire retina of most animals was involved by day 10 or 11. These results suggest that retin …

Depth position of spontaneous venous pulsations in ocular hypertensives and control-group discs.

Spontaneous venous pulsation can be observed at the site of entry of retinal veins into the physiological cup of the optic disc. Although it has been speculated that spontaneous vessel pulsation is related to primary open-angle glaucoma, no evaluation has been done on the depth position of such a pulsation inside the cup and its relationship to the intraocular pressure. Using laser scanning tomography, we measured the depth position of the maximal spontaneous vessel pulsation inside the optic cup in 24 discs of 24 patients, including 15 ocular hypertensives and 9 controls. The two groups did n

An update on techniques of photocoagulation treatment of proliferative sickle cell retinopathy.

Proliferative sickle cell retinopathy (PSR) can lead to visual loss from vitreous haemorrhage and traction or rhegmatogenous retinal detachment. We review two techniques of photocoagulation for PSR, feeder vessel photocoagulation and scatter photocoagulation. A prospective randomised trial of feeder vessel photocoagulation for PSR demonstrated that the incidence of vitreous haemorrhage and visual loss was diminished in eyes which were treated. Since this technique of treatment is difficult and can be associated with choroidal neovascularisation and retinal tears, scatter photocoagulation has a

Solitary silent venous papillary loops and ocular hypertension.

A series of 24 eyes in 23 patients is described showing solitary silent venous papillary loops. These loops are usually associated with a considerable degree of ocular hypertension, presenting when this hypertension is being investigated. They are silent, usually with no previous ocular history, single with a large diameter, affecting veins at the optic disc and not extending into the vitreous. The optic disc is cupped, but usually not more than 0.6 disc diameter, there is good central vision and either a full visual field or only early field loss. Fluorescein angiography shows the loops to be

Ocular pathology in multiple sclerosis: retinal atrophy and inflammation irrespective of disease duration.

There has been growing interest in the use of retinal imaging for tracking disease progression in multiple sclerosis. However, systematic and detailed pathological descriptions of retinal tissue in multiple sclerosis are lacking. Graded, histological evaluations on eyes from 82 patients with multiple sclerosis and 10 subjects with other neurological diseases, with immunohistochemistry on a subset, were performed and correlated with clinical and pathological findings. Multiple sclerosis cases demonstrated evidence of retinal atrophy and inflammation even in late-stage disease. Retinal ganglion
