Prevalence and molecular characterization of Giardia duodenalis in small ruminants of Shiraz, southwestern Iran: A zoonotic concern.

Livestock are commonly affected by gastrointestinal protozoan parasites, including Giardia duodenalis. In small ruminants, G. duodenalis infection may decrease carcass weight and dressing percentage. Current study was done to determine the prevalence, assemblage distribution, and zoonotic significance of Giardia infection in sheep and goats in Shiraz, southwestern Iran. In total, 200 fecal samples were randomly collected from 100 sheep and 100 goats in 10 farms in Shiraz, southwest of Iran (June 2021-February 2022) and directly examined for G. duodenalis cyst by saline/iodine wet mount examina…

Construction of Recombinant Rabies Virus Vectors Expressing H or F Protein of Peste des Petits Ruminants Virus.

Peste des petits ruminants (PPR) is one of the most contagious and fatal diseases of small ruminants in the world and is classified as a category A epidemic disease. It is the target of a global eradication campaign led by the Office International des Epizooties (OIE) and Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO). The PPR live attenuated vaccine is currently the most widely used and approved vaccine, but the use of this vaccine interferes with the serological testing of the PPR elimination program, and there is a potential safety risk. Viral vector vaccines are one of the m…

Diversity and Antimicrobial Resistance in the Streptococcus bovis/Streptococcus equinus Complex (SBSEC) Isolated from Korean Domestic Ruminants.

S. bovis/S. equinus complex (SBSEC) includes lactic acid-producing bacteria considered as the causative agent associated with acute rumen lactic acidosis in intensive ruminants. Considering the limited information on the detailed characteristics and diversity of SBSEC in Korea and the emergence of antimicrobial resistance (AMR), we investigated the diversity of SBSEC from domestic ruminants and verified the presence of antimicrobial resistance genes (ARGs) against several antimicrobials with their phenotypic resistance. Among 51 SBSEC isolates collected, two SBSEC members (S. equinus and S. lu…

Virus distribution and early pathogenesis of highly pathogenic peste-des-petits-ruminants virus in experimentally infected goats.

INTRODUCTION: Despite causing one of the most dreaded diseases of small ruminants, relatively little is known about the pathogenic events, antigen distribution and the cells responsible for the uptake and transmission of peste-des-petits-ruminants virus (PPRV) during primitive stages of infection. OBJECTIVES: We aimed at deciphering the sequential tissue tropism, pathological events and putative role of M2c macrophages during incubatory, prodromal and invasive stages of PPRV infection. METHODOLOGY: A total of 10 goats were sequentially sacrificed at 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5 days post-infection (dpi…

Ongoing Assessment of the Molecular Evolution of Peste Des Petits Ruminants Virus Continues to Question Viral Origins.

Understanding the evolution of viral pathogens is critical to being able to define how viruses emerge within different landscapes. Host susceptibility, which is spread between different species and is a contributing factor to the subsequent epidemiology of a disease, is defined by virus detection and subsequent characterization. Peste des petits ruminants virus is a plague of small ruminant species that is a considerable burden to the development of sustainable agriculture across Africa and much of Asia. The virus has also had a significant impact on populations of endangered species in recent…

Fasciola hepatica and Fasciola gigantica coexistence in domestic ruminants in Nigeria: application of a PCR-based tool.

The distinction between Fasciola hepatica and Fasciola gigantica has been traditionally based on morphological criteria, although accurate recognition of the two flukes is usually difficult because of substantial variations in morphological features. The main aim of this study was to develop a PCR-based assay for discrimination between both species collected in sheep and cattle from Nigeria. A total of 47 animals, 33 cattle and 14 sheep, were sampled, and a single adult fluke was collected from each animal. DNA was extracted from flukes, and primers were designed based on mitochondrial DNA seq

Evolution of Attenuation and Risk of Reversal in Peste des Petits Ruminants Vaccine Strain Nigeria 75/1.

Peste des Petits Ruminants (PPR) is a highly infectious disease caused by a virus of the Morbillivirus genus. The current PPR eradication effort relies mainly on the implementation of massive vaccination campaigns. One of the most widely used PPR vaccines is the Nigeria 75/1 strain obtained after attenuation by 75 serial passages of the wild type isolate in cell cultures. Here we use high throughput deep sequencing of the historical passages that led to the Nigeria 75/1 attenuated strain to understand the evolution of PPRV attenuation and to assess the risk of reversal in different cell types.…

BREEDING AND GENETICS SYMPOSIUM: Breeding for resilience to heat stress effects in dairy ruminants. A comprehensive review.

Selection for heat tolerant (HT) animals in dairy production has been so far linked to estimation of declines in production using milk recording and meteorological information on the day of control using reaction norms. Results from these models show that there is a reasonable amount of genetic variability in the individual response to high heat loads, which makes feasible selection of HT animals at low costs. However, the antagonistic relationship between level of production and response to heat stress (HS) implies that selection for HT animals under this approach must be done with caution so
