Clear cell sarcoma (CCS) is a rare tumor classically associated with the tendons and aponeuroses of distal extremities of young adults. CCS and malignant melanoma (MM) share immunohistochemical profiles and ultrastructural features, but classic CCS has characteristic morphology with low mitotic activity and minimal pleomorphism. Occasional cases show pleomorphism, high mitotic index, and/or melanin pigmentation, making CCS indistinguishable from MM based on morphology. However, CCS is genetically distinct owing to its consistent association with a t(12;22)(q13;q12) chromosomal translocation, l

BACKGROUND: The prognosis of patients with advanced sarcoma remains poor. Whether high-dose chemotherapy with stem cell support improves the long-term outcome for these patients or not is controversial.
METHODS: We present a large institutional experience of sarcoma patients treated with this therapy option. Thirty-eight patients with bone (n = 17) and soft tissue sarcomas (n = 21) were included. Apart from haematological complications, no WHO grade III-IV complications were observed. One patient died due to cardiac arrest after transplantation.
RESULTS: Following chemotherapy and/or surgery

Uterine tumors resembling ovarian sex cord tumors (UTROSCT) are rare neoplasms that typically follow a benign course. However, metastasis occurs in rare cases and features associated with poor outcomes are only recently being described. These include: size >5 cm, at least moderate cytologic atypia, >3 mitosis per 10 high-powered fields, infiltrative borders, necrosis, GREB1 rearrangements, ESR1 rearrangements, and NCOA2/3 fusions. To our knowledge, prominent sclerosis has not been described in UTROSCT, nor has it been associated with an increased risk of metastasis. We present the case of a 51

INTRODUCTION: Ewing's extraosseous sarcoma of the genitourinary system is an extremely rare disease. There are sporadic publications about the genitourinary sarcomas. We present a case of a primitive neuroectodermal pelvic tumor with bladder invasion in a 58-year-old man. Initially, he was admitted with complaints of intense lower abdominal and right lumbar pain, severe dysuria, macrohematuria, weight loss (by 15 kg in 6 months) and general weakness. Previously, a nephrostomy tube was put due the right hydronephrosis. Nephrostomy output was up to 100-150 ml per day, and glomerular filtration r

Introduction The proximal femur is a common site for primary bone sarcomas, including Ewing's sarcoma, chondrosarcoma, osteosarcoma, and giant cell tumors (GCT). Extensive resections are challenging to reconstruct because the size of the tumor may necessitate an extensive resection of the femur to achieve adequate oncologic clearance. The resection of the proximal femur can result in hip joint instability due to the loss of the strong native hip capsule or hip abductor strength. With a wide range of reconstruction options, such as resection arthrodesis, allograft-prosthetic composite (APC), an

Phage therapy (PT) shows promising potential in managing biofilm infections, which include refractory orthopedic infections. We report the case of a 13-year-old girl who developed chronic polymicrobial biofilm infection of a pelvic bone allograft after Ewing's sarcoma resection surgery. Chronic infection by Clostridium hathewayi, Proteus mirabilis and Finegoldia magna was worsened by methicillin-susceptible Staphylococcus aureus exhibiting an inducible Macrolides-Lincosamides-Streptogramin B resistance phenotype (iMLSB). After failure of conventional conservative treatment, combination of in s

BackgroundZalypsis(®) is a marine compound in phase II clinical trials for multiple myeloma, cervical and endometrial cancer, and Ewing's sarcoma. However, the determinants of the response to Zalypsis are not well known. The identification of biomarkers for Zalypsis activity would also contribute to broaden the spectrum of tumors by selecting those patients more likely to respond to this therapy.MethodsUsing in vitro drug sensitivity data coupled with a set of molecular data from a panel of sarcoma cell lines, we developed molecular signatures that predict sensitivity to Zalypsis. We verified

INTRODUCTION: Modern reconstructive techniques can prevent amputation in most cases of malignant musculoskeletal tumours. The free fibula has emerged as the primary method of bridging long bone gaps during limb salvage.
METHODS: Limb salvage was attempted in 23 patients (15 males and eight females) aged 17-57 years. The tumour was located in the humerus in 18 patients, radius in four patients and the metacarpals in one patient. Osteogenic sarcoma was the most common tumour (11 cases) followed by Ewing's sarcoma in six patients. After neoadjuvant chemotherapy, MRI was repeated and resectabilit

Cancer therapy and supportive measures entail the risk of infection with hepatitis B (HBV), hepatitis C (HCV) or human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). The objective of this analysis was to establish the incidence of infections with these viruses during antineoplastic treatment in our paediatric sarcoma patients, who are being followed-up within the Late Effects Surveillance System (LESS), which prospectively registers sequelae of therapy for Ewing's-, soft tissue- and osteosarcoma in patients treated in Germany, Austria and Switzerland within the trials EICESS-92/EURO-E.W.I.N.G.-99, CWS-96/CWS-2

Fourteen cases of neoplasms metastatic to the ovaries in children 10 weeks to 15 years of age are reported. Eight tumors were neuroblastomas, 7 primary in the adrenal gland, and 1 primary in the posterior mediastinum. Three tumors were rhabdomyosarcomas primary in the ethmoid sinus, right occipital region, and left thigh, respectively. The final three tumors were a Ewing's sarcoma, a rhabdoid tumor, and a carcinoid tumor primary in the fibula, kidney, and lung, respectively. The ovarian involvement was an autopsy finding in nine of the patients. Three of the remaining five patients presented c

Twenty-nine consecutive patients 2-35 years old underwent serial thoracic CT evaluations for metastatic disease. Thymic volumes were determined for each patient during cycles of chemotherapy and were compared with the patient's clinical status. This group included patients with Hodgkin's disease (13 patients), osteogenic sarcoma (five), testicular neoplasm (four), Wilms' tumor (three), rhabdomyosarcoma (two), malignant fibrous histiocytoma (one), and Ewing's sarcoma (one). Seven patients with mediastinal lymphoma had tumor involvement of the thymus and therefore were excluded. The 22 remaining

Primitive neuroectodermal tumor (PNET)/Ewing's sarcoma tumors are a group of highly malignant tumors composed of small, round cells showing neuroectodermal differentiation that commonly affects soft tissue and bone. PNET involving the genitourinary system is rare and PNET of the penile urethra is rarer still. It exhibits a highly aggressive biological behavior with poor prognosis. We report a case of a 27-year-old male presenting with penile swelling and difficulty in passing urine. Examination revealed a firm penile urethral mass. Pathological and immunohistochemical results of the specimen o

BACKGROUND: Langerhans cell histiocytosis previously known as histiocytosis X is a rare disease of children and young adults with a very broad clinical spectrum. In children, its annual incidence is estimated between 0.2-0.5 per 100,000.
CASE REPRESENTATION: An 8-year-old Moroccan girl with no known personal or family history presented to our institution with painful swelling of both forearms. An X-ray and magnetic resonance imaging were inconclusive. We then performed a biopsy curettage (of her left forearm). Microscopic analysis followed by immunohistochemical analysis disclosed a diagnosis

Despite several reports of proximal arm ischemia due to radiation therapy, there are no reports of hand ischemia, presumably due to the rarity of radiation treatment of the distal upper extremity. We present a case of a 42-year-old male presenting with acute hand ischemia 36 years after being treated with forearm radiation for Ewing's sarcoma. Angiography demonstrated a patent brachial artery, occluded radial and ulnar arteries in the forearm, and a normal-caliber reconstituted radial artery at the anatomical snuffbox feeding a patent palmar arch. Transluminal balloon angioplasty was attempted

BACKGROUND: Hematopoetic stem cell transplantation may be complicated by genital graft-versus-host (GVH) disease and may uncommonly result in labial fusion.
CASE: A 22-year-old woman with a history of Ewing's sarcoma and acute myelogenous leukemia received chemotherapy and total-body irradiation followed by a matched, unrelated donor hematopoetic stem cell transplantation. After transplantation, she developed chronic GVH disease involving the skin, eyes, mouth, and joints. Concomitant vulvar pruritus was presumed to be a fungal infection but, in fact, was genital GVH disease manifesting as la

Hematogenous osteomyelitis (HOM) in adults is a very rare event in industrialised countries. However, in tropical regions the morbidity of HOM is more important, primarily due to the impact of sickle cell disease, thalassemia, HIV-infection and tuberculosis. HOM is most commonly caused by pyogenic bacteria and mycobacteria, but infections by fungi, viruses and parasites must also be considered. In spite of modern diagnostic procedures such as nuclear and magnetic resonance imaging, the histopathologic and microbiologic examination of bone remains the gold standard for diagnosing OM. Long-term survival of patients with a malignant bone tumor increased with a combined therapeutic approach using chemotherapy and possibly radiation therapy. Today up to 80% of patients with an osteosarcoma or Ewing's sarcoma survive. Therefore, it is important that the functional outcome and the quality of life are good after resection of the tumor. Before the era of endoprosthetic devices, rotationplasty, which was introduced in 1974 by Salzer for surgery of malignant bone tumors and modified by Winkelmann, protected many patients from an amputation. Although many authors favor limb-saving pr

A case of clear cell sarcoma (CCS) arising in the transverse colon is presented. The tumor consisted of sheets or small nests of epithelioid malignant cells possessing pleomorphic nuclei with one or more prominent nucleoli and ample clear or slightly eosinophilic cytoplasm. Some of the tumor cells contained various amounts of melanin pigments that were confirmed by histochemical and ultrastructural examinations. Immunohistochemical examination showed a positive immunoreactivity for HMB45 and S-100 protein. A metastatic nodule, which was found 9 months after surgery, showed similar histological

Since about 15 years intensive chemotherapy followed by autologous bone marrow transplantation has been used on the basis of "dose-response" principle to treat certain children with tumours of sombre prognosis. At present, the main indications for this method are metastatif neuroblastoma in less than one-year old children, non-Hodgkin's malignant lymphomas in partial remission or relapse, refractory or recurrent Hodgkin's disease and some peculiar forms of Wilms' tumour. In other tumours, such as rhabdomyosarcoma, Ewing's sarcoma or brain tumours, the indications have not yet been clearly dete…
