Background/Objectives: Diving exposure can cause auditory injury involving both the middle and inner ear structures. Inner ear barotrauma (IEB) and inner ear decompression sickness (IEDCS) are the major inner ear disorders and frequently present with auditory and vestibular symptoms. This study examined how diving characteristics relate to patterns of auditory trauma. Methods: A retrospective chart review of 30 patients, with 36 affected ears, was performed. Diving depth, clinical manifestations, and treatment responses were analyzed to identify factors influencing related prognosis. Results:

OBJECTIVES: We would assess the possible impact of a range of physical and psychosocial working conditions on early exit from paid employment (i.e., before retirement age) in a representative employee population in Germany.
METHODS: We analysed a cohort from the German Study on Mental Health at Work (S-MGA) with a baseline of 2351 employees in 2011/12, sampled randomly from the register of integrated employment biographies (IEB) at the Institute for Employment Research (IAB). Follow-up ended mid-2015. Early Exit comprised episodes of either pensioning, long-term sickness absence or unemployme

The diseases responsible for lymphadenopathies with autoimmune features were examined. Such features play a major role in a vast number of clinical conditions whose aetiology is for the most part unknown but which present several clinical, histological and laboratory aspects in common. The most significant of these conditions are serum sickness and similar pictures induced by drugs, iodised contrast media and hymenoptera venom, angioimmunoblastic lymphadenopathies, giant multicentric lymph node hyperplasia, diffuse connectivitis, Wegener's granulomatosis lymphoid granulomatosis, necrotic lymph

BACKGROUND: Flying foxes (megachiroptera) and insectivorous microbats (microchiroptera) are the known reservoirs for a range of recently emerged, highly pathogenic viruses. In Australia there is public health concern relating to bats' role as reservoirs of Australian Bat Lyssavirus (ABLV), which has clinical features identical to classical rabies. Three deaths from ABLV have occurred in Australia. A survey was conducted to determine the frequency of bat exposures amongst adults in Australia's most populous state, New South Wales; explore reasons for handling bats; examine reported practices up

BACKGROUND: Maintenance hemodialysis (HD) patients have altered levels of thyroid hormone (TH) in euthyroid sick syndrome, along with low T3 levels and several nutritional metabolic disturbances. Selenium (Se) is an essential trace element for living organisms, which has been shown to play a major role in thyroid hormone levels and the nutritional metabolism. The aims of the present study were to assess the changes in serum levels of selenium and their correlation with disorders of the endocrine and nutritional metabolism in HD patients.
METHODS: Fifty-three uremic patients with hemodialysis

BACKGROUND: This study of outpatients at a military medical center seeks to evaluate the extent that this population relies on religion and spirituality to cope with health-related stress. This study also assesses outpatients' desire for spiritual intervention in the context of their medical appointments.
METHODS: A cross-sectional survey was conducted using a convenience sample of 670 outpatients presenting at a military medical center.
RESULTS: The majority of respondents endorsed a Christian religious affiliation (87%), a belief in God (91%), and attendance at religious services at least

OBJECTIVE: To examine the initial feasibility and potential efficacy of a cognitive-behavioral intervention for youth with anxiety disorders and non-medical somatic symptoms.
BACKGROUND: Based on a strong relationship between somatic complaints and anxiety disorders, screening youngsters seeking medical care due to physical symptoms with no organic basis may enhance the recognition of anxiety disorders and facilitate access to appropriate services.
METHOD: Seven boys and girls, ages 8 through 15, with medically unexplained gastrointestinal complaints and anxiety disorders received a 12-sessi

The purpose of this study was to determine if providing men with information about screening for prostate cancer would enable them to assume a more active role in decision making with their family physician, and lower levels of anxiety and decisional conflict. Men were recruited from one family medical clinic in Winnipeg, Manitoba. One hundred men scheduled for a periodic health examination (PHE) were randomly assigned to receive verbal and written information either prior to the PHE, or following the second interview. Men completed measures of preferred decisional role and anxiety prior to th

There are few psychiatric studies of serious self-injury patients admitted to general hospitals. In order to better characterize patients whose overdoses are serious enough to require hospitalization on a toxicology service, we describe 207 consecutively admitted, serious overdose patients (OD), all of whom were psychiatrically evaluated. They were compared with 53 nonoverdose self-injury cases (NO) and 79 medical/surgical patients with suicidal ideation (SI) who were routinely referred for consultation during the same 2-year period. All data were contemporaneously compiled into a computerized

As more people become infected with HIV, Health Care Workers (HCWs) have a greater likelihood of being exposed at work. HIV exposure threatens the life of the HCW and can elicit a stress reaction. Although HCWs have reactions similar to those of people who have been exposed to other traumatic events, the nature of this stressor and the length of time it lasts is unique. This article presents counseling interventions that address the needs of the individual HCW during this event. These counseling guidelines promote the HCW's discussion of the event and any relevant past unresolved traumatic exp

Patients with right parietal lesions often deny their paralysis (anosognosia), but do they have "tacit" knowledge of their paralysis? I devised three novel tests to explore this. First, the patients were given a choice between a bimanual task (e.g., tying shoe laces) vs a unimanual one (e.g., threading a bolt). They chose the former on 17 of 18 trials and, surprisingly, showed no frustration or learning despite repeated failed attempts. I conclude that they have no tacit knowledge of paralysis (or, if such knowledge exists, it is not available for this particular task). Second, I used a "virtu

The relationship between social support and adjustment was investigated in children with a chronic physical illness or handicap. Mothers of 153 children with juvenile diabetes, juvenile rheumatoid arthritis, chronic obesity, spina bifida, or cerebral palsy reported on these children's family support, peer support, externalizing behavior problems, and internalizing behavior problems. Children reported as having high social support from both family and peers showed a significantly better adjustment than those with high social support from only one of these sources. Chronically ill or physically

Extracellular vesicles (EVs), including exosomes (EXOs) and microvesicles, are small particles surrounded by lipid bilayers that almost all cell types produce. They are essential for cell signaling because they transport bioactive molecules, including DNA, RNA, proteins, and lipids. The amount and make-up of EXOs are linked to several illnesses, including inflammatory diseases, cancer, metabolic diseases, and the one we're communicating about here, female infertility. Bacteria, fungi, viruses, and parasites are just a few of the organisms known to affect the reproductive system in both men and

DEAD-box RNA helicases are ubiquitous proteins found in all kingdoms of life and that are associated with all processes involving RNA. Their central roles in biology make these proteins potential targets for therapeutic or prophylactic drugs. The Ded1/DDX3 subfamily of DEAD-box proteins is of particular interest because of their important role(s) in translation. In this paper, we identified and aligned the protein sequences of 28 different DEAD-box proteins from the kinetoplast-protozoan parasite Leishmania infantum, which is the cause of the visceral form of leishmaniasis that is often lethal

There is undoubtedly growing interest in the role of scent in the design of multisensory experiences. However, to date, the majority of the research has focused on its use in the (static) built environment. As highlighted by this narrative review, somewhat different challenges and opportunities arise just as soon as one starts to consider olfaction in the case of transportation-what might be called "scent in motion." For instance, levels of anxiety/stress while traveling are often higher (especially in the case of air travel), while, at the same time, the passenger's personal space is frequent

Thioester-containing proteins (TEPs) are conserved proteins with a role in innate immune immunity. In the current study, we characterized the TEP family in the genome of six tsetse fly species (Glossina spp.). Tsetse flies are the biological vectors of several African trypanosomes, which cause sleeping sickness in humans or nagana in livestock. The analysis of the tsetse TEP sequences revealed information about their structure, evolutionary relationships and expression profiles under both normal and trypanosome infection conditions. Phylogenetic analysis of the family showed that tsetse flies

The oral microbiome can alter the balance between health and disease, locally and systemically. Within the oral cavity, bacteria, archaea, fungi, protozoa, and viruses may all be found, each having a particular role, but strongly interacting with each other and with the host, in sickness or in health. A description on how colonization occurs and how the oral microbiome dynamically evolves throughout the host's life is given. In this chapter the authors also address oral and nonoral conditions in which oral microorganisms may play a role in the etiology and progression, presenting the up-to-dat

Recent studies report that a conflict between information from the visual system and vestibular system is one of the main reasons for induction of motion sickness (MS). We may be able to clarify the integration mechanism of visual and vestibular information using an animal model with a visual defect, the retinal degeneration fast (rdf) mouse, and the role of vestibular information in the pathogenesis of MS. The rdf mice and wild-type Kunming mice were subjected to rotary stimulation to induce MS. Conditioned taste anorexia to saccharin solution and behavior score were used to observe the diffe

A prospective longitudinal study was designed to assess the role of pretreatment proneness to nausea and vomiting (NV) in the development of postchemotherapy NV in a group of Chinese breast cancer patients receiving moderately highly emetogenic chemotherapy. Seventy-one chemotherapy-naive subjects participated in the study. Patients were assessed the day before chemotherapy with measurements of their anxiety level, depression, fatigue and proneness to NV, motion sickness, NV experienced in past pregnancies, history of labyrinthitis, expectation of developing NV and expectation of developing pa

This review article aims to discuss neuroimmune interactions by emphasizing the role of central and peripheral immunities in central nervous system (CNS) protection and function, as well as how abnormalities in this relationship may be implicated in the genesis of neurodegenerative diseases (NDDs). Immune elements that play roles within the CNS both during stable and infectious states are described. Innate CNS immunity is explored as a distinct entity comprised of the brain blood barrier, CNS parenchyma, and resident immune cells-microglia and astrocytes, whose roles in antigen recognition and
