Evidence-based social skills training for adolescents with autism spectrum disorders: the UCLA PEERS program.

The present study examines the efficacy and durability of the PEERS Program, a parent-assisted social skills group intervention for high-functioning adolescents with ASD. Results indicate that teens receiving PEERS significantly improved their social skills knowledge, social responsiveness, and overall social skills in the areas of social communication, social cognition, social awareness, social motivation, assertion, cooperation, and responsibility, while decreasing autistic mannerisms and increasing the frequency of peer interactions. Independent teacher ratings revealed significant improvem

Development of Moral Judgments in Impersonal and Personal Dilemmas in Autistic Spectrum Disorders from Childhood to Late Adolescence.

A potential underlying mechanism associated with the difficulties in social interactions in Autistic Spectrum Disorders (ASD) concerns the abnormal development of moral reasoning. The present study examined utilitarian and deontological judgments in impersonal and personal moral dilemmas, comparing 66 individuals with ASD and 61 typically developing (TD) individuals between 6 and 18 years. Utilitarian judgments decreased with age. This decline was much more gradual for personal dilemmas in the ASD than in the TD group. ASD individuals rated utilitarian judgments as more appropriate but felt le…

Peer familiarity and lexical diversity in autistic and typically developing preschoolers during free play.

Differences in social communication may shape how autistic children use language with different interaction partners. This study examined lexical diversity during free play interactions with a friend and an acquaintance among 50 preschoolers (21 autistic and 29 typically developing). Each child participated in separate play sessions with the two partners. Overall, autistic children produced less lexically diverse language than TD children. TD children also demonstrated greater lexical diversity with friends than with acquaintances, whereas no systematic partner effect emerged for the autistic

[Interaction of sociodemographic factors in the association between psychosocial factors and active commuting to school].

The study aimed to analyze the interaction of sociodemographic factors in the association between psychosocial factors and active commuting to school. This was a cross-sectional study in 2018 with a sample of 1,984 students. The target sociodemographic factors were sex, age, parents' schooling, and socioeconomic status. Social support and self-efficacy were measured with questionnaires. Active commuting to school was defined as walking, bicycling, or skateboarding to and from school. Binary logistic regression was used to verify the association between psychosocial factors and active commuting

Interactive Effect of Negative Affectivity and Rumination in Terms of Mental Health Among Latinos in Primary Care.

The present investigation examined the interactive effects of rumination and negative affectivity in relation to anxiety and depressive symptoms and psychopathology among 245 Latino adults (M age = 39.7, SD = 11.4; 86.9 % female; 97.6 % reported Spanish as their first language) attending a community-based primary healthcare clinic. As expected, there was a significant interaction between rumination and negative affectivity for depressive, suicidal, social anxiety, anxious arousal symptoms, number of mood and anxiety disorders, and disability among the primary care Latino sample. Neurocomputational Mechanisms Linking Future Interaction Prospects to Reactive and Proactive Costly Punishment.

Costly punishment in social bonds includes reactive penalties for transgressions and proactive sanctions against fair behaviors; however, a unified neurocomputational framework is lacking. Using neuroimaging and computational modeling, we tested how future interaction prospects modulate both forms of punishment. Participants, acting as second- or third-party punishers, responded to offers from partners with or without future interactions, imposing harsher punishment on both fair and unfair offers from non-future-interacting individuals, consistent with lower self-reported closeness. Heightened

[Early mother-infant interaction and factors negatively affecting parenting].

The social information-processing model contributes to identifying the psychological processes underlying the construct "sensitivity" in early mother-child interaction. Negative emotional states associated with inadequate self-regulation in coping with stressors affect the mother's attention skills and the processing of the baby's signals. This leads to less synchronous parental practices, particularly unsatisfactory when the baby is unhappy, or crying because the required self-regulation is not provided. This micro-social research studies the sequential profile of maternal reactions to the ba

Chronic exposure to noise modifies the anxiogenic response, but not the hypoactivity, detected on withdrawal from chronic ethanol treatment.

Two groups of rats received chronic ethanol treatment in quiet or noisy housing conditions. Animals from both housing conditions were then withdrawn from ethanol for 12 h prior to testing in the social interaction and elevated plus-maze tests of anxiety. Both ethanol withdrawal groups showed marked hypoactivity (decreased motor activity and decreased closed arm entries in the plus-maze), but they differed in their anxiogenic response (decreased social interaction and percentage of time spent on the open arms), with only the group treated in quiet conditions showing a significant response. A si…

Children with physical handicaps and their mothers: the interrelation of social support, maternal adjustment, and child adjustment.

Examined the interrelation of maternal adjustment, mother-child interaction, and child adjustment in 29 families of children with spina bifida and without mental retardation and in 28 families of children without handicaps. A multivariate, ecological model proposed that adjustment of mother and child depends on the adaptiveness of maternal response to the stress of the physical handicap and on the ability of mothers to create an optimal caregiving environment through mother-child interaction. Analyses examining the relationships among maternal social support, maternal psychological adjustment,

Extraversion, neuroticism, and sexual behavior: interrelationships in a sample of young men.

In his theory on sexuality and personality Eysenck proposed a positive correlation between extraversion and intensified sexual behavior and between neuroticism and problems in sexual behavior. An earlier study with married persons did not show any of these correlations. It was hypothesized that this connection exists only for unmarried persons who are not engaged in long-lasting relationships, because in the latter the quality of the relationship determines the sexual interaction. Within a sample of young unmarried men there was a positive correlation between extraversion and items in which th

Chronic treatment with Ro 15-1788 distinguishes between its benzodiazepine antagonist, agonist and inverse agonist properties.

Ro 15-1788 (flumazepil) is an imidazodiazepine that is able to antagonise most of the behavioural actions of the benzodiazepines, as well as having some intrinsic effects. Acute administration of Ro 15-1788 (10 mg/kg) decreases social interaction between male rats and elevates exploratory head-dipping. After 5 days of pretreatment there was tolerance to the former effect, although Ro 15-1788 retained its ability to antagonise the effects on social interaction of the beta-carboline, FG 7142. Ro 15-1788 also retained its ability to elevate head-dipping: additionally, the chronically-treated rats…

Social support moderates quality of life outcomes during a mind-body intervention among adults with neurofibromatosis.

PURPOSE: Neurofibromatoses (NF; NF1, NF2-related schwannomatosis, and other forms) are incurable genetic disorders linked to poor quality of life (QoL). Limited research exists on social support as a protective factor for QoL in NF. This secondary analysis examined whether baseline social support moderates QoL outcomes in individuals with NF. METHODS: Participants (N = 228, Mage=41.5, 75% female) were randomized to 3RP-NF (a mind-body resiliency intervention) or HEP-NF (control). Measures of social support and QoL (environmental, social, physical, psychological) were collected at baseline, po

BALB/c mice: low sociability and other phenotypes that may be relevant to autism.

Low sociability is one of the most prominent and disabling symptoms of autism. The biology of sociability is not well understood, and there is no available treatment that adequately improves social functioning in most autistic patients. The development of animal models of reduced sociability can aid in the elucidation of the biology of social behaviors, and may ultimately shed light on the biology of autism. This paper will review evidence that mice of the BALB/c inbred strain show relatively low levels of social interaction in various settings and across various stages of development, includi…

Neural and cortisol responses during play with human and computer partners in children with autism.

Children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) exhibit impairment in reciprocal social interactions, including play, which can manifest as failure to show social preference or discrimination between social and nonsocial stimuli. To explore mechanisms underlying these deficits, we collected salivary cortisol from 42 children 8-12 years with ASD or typical development during a playground interaction with a confederate child. Participants underwent functional MRI during a prisoner's dilemma game requiring cooperation or defection with a human (confederate) or computer partner. Search region of inte…

[Neurological background of Asperger's disorder and other pervasive developmental disorders].

The core features of pervasive developmental disorder (PDD) are impairment in social interaction and restricted ranges of interest and activities with obsessive/compulsive traits. Clinical characteristics of PDD range across a variety of psychophysiological areas, from vigilance and autonomic arousal through attention to higher cognitive functions such as memory and language. The author reviewed hypotheses on the neurological background of PDD, which includes brainstem, cerebellum, prefrontal cortex, mirror neuron system, and amygdala and related circuit. Among them, the amygdala hypothesis ap…
