Development and External Validation of a Prognostic Prediction Model for Hospitalization in SARS-CoV-2-Infected Ambulatory Patients.

BACKGROUND: Accurately predicting hospitalization risk in severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) positive outpatients is critical for triage and resource planning. We developed and externally validated a clinical prediction model for 30-day COVID-19 hospitalization using data from symptomatic adults who tested positive in the outpatient setting. The derivation cohort included 22 859 patients from 185 outpatient clinics in a large Utah health care network between December 2021 and March 2023, during Omicron variant predominance. Among these patients, 281 (1.2%) were hospit

Perspectives of a mobile intervention for kidney transplant seekers: Post-intervention qualitative results from the KidneyTIME study.

OBJECTIVE: Mobile health education could expand accessibility, but limited research has explored attitudes about such products among kidney transplant (KT) seekers. This study aimed to assess KT-seeker's attitudes about the learning and donor search intervention in the KidneyTIME study, which examined the effectiveness of a web-based intervention leveraging animated video education, video viewing and sharing, and use-reminders compared to usual care video alone. METHODS: Among 56 unique intervention-arm patients (54% non-Hispanic White, 58% no college degree, 46% total annual household income

Increasing use of systems science in cardiovascular disease prevention to understand how to address geographic health disparities in communities with a disproportionate burden of risk.

OBJECTIVE: Marginalized communities shoulder a disproportionate burden of cardiovascular disease (CVD) driven by concentrated neighborhood social risk factors. We provide a case study of systems science application to address geographic CVD health disparities at the community level - informing the science of CVD health disparities research. METHODS: We conducted a two-phased, multi-methods needs assessment in the Denver, Colorado area. Phase I consisted of a social network analysis to map a two-mode network of existing CVD prevention interventions and their implementing organizations. In Phas…

Development of a Psychometric Tool to Measure Community Solidarity Among Sexual Minorities: Evidence From a Pay-it-Forward Randomized Controlled Trial.

BACKGROUND: Community solidarity is increasingly important in public health. However, few studies have examined solidarity in relation to health outcomes. The purpose of this study was to develop a psychometric tool to measure solidarity among Chinese men who have sex with men (MSM) and assess whether community solidarity relates to differences in sexually transmitted infection testing. METHODS: We used data from the pay-it-forward randomized controlled trial of 301 men from Beijing and Guangzhou, China. Men who have sex with men were randomized into pay-it-forward (participants receive free

Estimating the visibility rate of abortion: a case study of Kerman, Iran.

OBJECTIVES: Abortion is a sensitive issue; many cultures disapprove of it, which leads to under-reporting. This study sought to estimate the rate of abortion visibility in the city of Kerman, Iran-that is, the percentage of acquaintances who knew about a particular abortion. For estimating the visibility rate, it is crucial to use the network scale-up method, which is a new, indirect method of estimating sensitive behaviours more accurately. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This cross-sectional study was conducted in Kerman, Iran using various methods to ensure the cooperation of clinicians and women.

Modelling the Contribution of Metacognitions, Impulsiveness, and Thought Suppression to Behavioural Addictions in Adolescents.

The most common behavioral addictions in adolescents are Internet Gaming Disorder (IGD), Compulsive Sexual Behavior Disorder (CSBD), and Problematic Social Networks Use (PSNU). In the present study, we investigated whether thought suppression and impulsiveness mediate the relationship between metacognitions and these three behavioral addictions (IGD, CSBD and PSNU). In Study 1 (n = 471), we examined whether online gaming thought suppression and impulsiveness mediate the relationship between metacognitions and IGD. In Study 2 (n = 453), we examined whether sex thought suppression and impulsiven

The gendered impact of Buruli ulcer on the household production of health and social support networks: Why decentralization favors women.

BACKGROUND: Buruli ulcer [BU] is a chronic and debilitating neglected tropical skin disease caused by Mycobacterium ulcerans. The treatment of moderate to severe BU affects the well-being of entire households and places a strain on both gender relations within households and social relations with kin asked for various types of support. In this paper, we employ the conceptual lenses provided by the Household Production of Health approach to understanding the impact of illness on the household as a unit of analysis, gender studies, and social support related research to better understand BU heal

Biopsychosocial determinants of tuberculosis care and treatment outcomes: a scoping review and bibliometric analysis.

BACKGROUND: Tuberculosis (TB) remains the leading infectious-disease cause of death globally, with an estimated 10.7 million incident cases and 1.23 million deaths in 2024. Its persistence is driven not by microbial factors alone, but by a complex interplay of biological, psychological, and social determinants influencing exposure, vulnerability, and access to care. Despite growing recognition of these biopsychosocial dimensions, the available evidence remains fragmented across disciplines, and no previous review has comprehensively mapped their scope while simultaneously characterizing the st

Social Ecological Factors of Sexual Subjectivity and Contraceptive Use and Access Among Young Women in the Northwest Territories, Canada.

Adolescent women in the Northwest Territories (NWT), Canada, experience many sexual health challenges that are linked to a history of colonization and intergenerational effects of trauma. This study was informed by social ecological theory and explored how young women in the NWT develop sexual subjectivity within the context of contraception use and access during this time of decolonization. A total of 41 participants (aged 13 to 17 years) attended the Fostering Open eXpression among Youth (FOXY) body-mapping intervention in six NWT communities and then completed semistructured interviews. Correlates of subjective well-being in stroke patients.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Data on survival and functioning after stroke needs to be supplemented by measures emphasizing the patients' subjective perception. We studied (1) subjective well-being (SWB) as a latent variable in a common-factor model with four items, (2) the reliability of these four items, and (3) variables related to SWB in stroke patients. METHODS: Data on all stroke patients (n=1417) and a random subsample of stroke-free individuals of similar age (n=1439) were collected from the Nord-Trøndelag Health Survey, a cross-sectional study of 74977 persons. Based on a two-sample facto

Effectiveness of a community-level social mobilization intervention in achieving the outcomes of polio vaccination campaigns during the post-polio-endemic period: Evidence from CORE Group polio project in Uttar Pradesh, India.

BACKGROUND: A social mobilization (SM) initiative contributed to India's success in polio elimination. This was the CORE Group Polio Project (CGPP) India, a partner of the Uttar Pradesh (UP) SM Network and which continued its SM activities, even during the polio-free period through a network of multi-level social mobilizers. This paper assesses the effects of this community-level SM (CLSM) intervention on the extent of community engagement and performance of polio Supplementary Immunization Activity campaigns (SIAs) during the post-polio-endemic period (i.e., from March 2012 to September 2017)

Transdiagnostic behavioral and sociodemographic influences on the cognitive-adaptive functioning gap in neurodivergent children.

Adaptive functioning typically aligns with cognitive ability in the general population, but this relationship appears more complex in neurodivergent populations. Individuals with autism, attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) frequently show a discrepancy between cognitive ability and adaptive functioning. However, the behavioral and sociodemographic factors associated with this cognitive-adaptive functioning gap remain unclear. Data were collected from the Province of Ontario Neurodevelopmental Disorders Network (POND) and included 902 partici

Neural representations of perceived engagement during action observation.

Interpersonal motor interactions are central to social life, yet it remains unclear how social cues relevant to detecting engagement are encoded in the brain. Recent evidence suggests that regions traditionally associated with mentalizing, such as the dorsomedial prefrontal cortex (dmPFC) and temporo-parietal junction (TPJ), co-activate with nodes of the Action Observation Network (AON) during motor engagement with others, pointing to a synergistic role in the processing of action features during interaction. Using fMRI and Representational Similarity Analysis (RSA), we examined brain response

Social determinants and emergency department utilization: Findings from the Veterans Health Administration.

BACKGROUND: Social determinants of health (SDH) are strong predictors of morbidity and mortality but health care systems struggle to integrate documentation of SDH into health records in ways that can be used for health services research. Given the impact of social factors on health, it is important to examine the relationship with emergency department (ED) utilization. OBJECTIVE: To examine the association between seven indicators of SDH and ED utilization using electronic health record (EHR) data from the Veterans Health Administration (VHA). METHODS: This cross-sectional analysis included

Talca no es Santiago: Moral geography, rurality, and infrastructure of possibility in LGBTIQA+ violence and survival.

BACKGROUND: Violence against LGBTIQA+ individuals is not limited to discrete acts of aggression. It also constitutes a territorial ecology that unevenly distributes habitability, safety, and recognition. This study examines how the statement "Talca is not Santiago" works as more than a comment on city size: it names a moral geography where reputation, social surveillance, and uneven access to infrastructure produce distinct thresholds of visibility, risk, and agency. METHODS: We used Reflexive Thematic Analysis (RTA) following Braun and Clarke to analyze a subcorpus of seven individual interv
