Different cortex activation between young and middle-aged people during different type problem-solving: An EEG&fNIRS study.

Problem-solving strategies vary depending on the type of problem and aging. This study investigated the hemodynamic response measured by the changes in the oxyhemoglobin concentration (HbO), alpha frequency power, and their interrelation during problem-solving in healthy young and middle-aged individuals, employing combined electroencephalography (EEG) and functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) recordings. The study included 39 young and 30 middle-aged subjects. The brain activation that occurred while answering different questions was recorded using combined EEG and fNIRS. During the E

Positive resonance: Successful interpersonal emotion regulation facilitated relationship closeness by enhanced inter-brain synchronization.

Interpersonal emotion regulation (IER) refers to the dynamic process where a regulator employs specific strategies to alleviate a target's distress. It remains unclear whether successful IER could facilitate interpersonal relationship closeness (IRC). The present study aimed to explore whether successful IER, based on two typical strategies-cognitive reappraisal (CR) and expressive suppression (ES)-for down-regulating the target's negative emotions, could enhance IRC among friend dyads, and to identify the underlying neural correlates of this process using functional near-infrared spectroscopy

Love in the time of Zoom: how intimacy modulates brain and behaviour synchrony in face-to-face versus video communication.

This study explores how video-mediated communication (VMC) and face-to-face communication (FTF) affect social bonding in relationships of varying intimacy. Using hyperscanning fNIRS and dyadic behavioural analysis, data from 72 dyads (36 romantic couples and 36 friends) were analysed. Results revealed an intimacy-by-modality interaction: couples showed better behavioural coordination and higher interpersonal neural synchrony (INS) in the 0.081-0.09 Hz band during FTF, while friends had better synchrony in VMC. In the 0.038-0.046 Hz band, friends exhibited greater INS during FTF, and couples sh

Development of a novel label-free NIR aptasensor based on triphenylmethane dyes for rapid and sensitive detection of copper ions.

Heavy metal pollution, particularly from copper ions (Cu2+), poses a significant threat to both the ecological environment and human health. However, traditional copper ion analysis techniques are often hindered by the need for expensive equipment, labor-intensive sample preparation and skilled operation, which limits their effectiveness for field and real-time applications. In this work, we report a novel near-infrared aptamer sensor (NIRApt) that originates from the binding reaction between the DNA aptamer AptCu and the fluorescent small molecule crystal violet (CV), enabling rapid detection

Exploring the neural mechanisms of ADHD in children: a multifeature cross-task fNIRS analysis.

Children with attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder exhibit multidimensional abnormalities of brain function, and the identification of key brain regions is often inconsistent across studies due to the influence of specific cognitive demands and feature selection. We conducted multifeature cross-task analysis and correlation analysis of functional near-infrared spectroscopy-based functional activity and connectivity under both resting state and verbal fluency task. Results reveal that more pronounced brain activation differences were observed in the right hemisphere of attention-deficit hyp

Linking Connectivity Dynamics to Symptom Severity and Cognitive Abilities in Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder: An FNIRS Study.

Functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) has emerged as a valuable tool for investigating neurobiological markers in children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). While previous studies have identified abnormal functional connectivity in ASD children compared with typically developing (TD) peers, brain connectivity dynamics and their associations with autism symptoms and cognitive abilities remain underexplored. We analyzed fNIRS data from 44 children (30 boys, 21 ASD/23 TD) aged 2.08-6.67 years while they viewed a silent cartoon. Using sliding window correlation and k-means clustering, w

Dynamic Neural Mechanisms Underlying Sustained Motor Training Post-Stroke: An fNIRS Investigation Employing Time-Varying ALFF and Functional Connectivity Analysis.

Motor dysfunction of the upper limbs following a stroke predominantly arises from abnormal motor patterning caused by the disrupted balance of inter-cortical communication within motor-associated cortical regions. Temporal analysis offers a more precise reflection of the cortical functional state in affected patients. This study employed fNIRS to capture hemodynamic responses among 20 stroke patients and 19 healthy controls in both resting and Baduanjin task state. Including computing the coefficient of variation of fractional amplitude of low-frequency fluctuations (fALFF) for each channel, a

Leveraging Transfer Learning and Monte Carlo Dropout for Uncertainty Informed NIRS-based Detection of Systemic Sclerosis Hand Perfusion Patterns.

Early diagnosis of systemic sclerosis (SSc) is critical for early intervention and improved patient outcomes. This study explores the integration of near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) with deep learning for classification of SSc patients based on hand perfusion patterns. A probabilistic convolutional neural network (CNN) using MobileNetV2 with transfer learning was employed to analyze NIRS-derived oxygen saturation maps. The model achieved a test accuracy of 87.5%, demonstrating strong classification performance despite the limited data set. The Monte Carlo Dropout method was incorporated to ev

Altered functional connectivity subserving expressed emotion environments in schizophrenia: An fNIRS study.

Living in high-expressed emotion (EE) environments, characterized by critical, hostile, or over-involved family attitudes, has been linked to increased relapse rates among individuals with schizophrenia (SZ). In our previous work (Wang et al., 2023), we conducted the first feasibility study of using functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) with our developed EE stimuli to examine cortical hemodynamics in SZ. To better understand the neural mechanisms underlying EE environmental factors in SZ, we extended our investigation by employing functional connectivity (FC) analysis with a graph the

Can similarity of autistic traits promote neural synchronization?

People with similar levels of autistic traits are reported to exhibit better interactions than those with larger differences in autistic traits. However, whether this "similarity effect" exists at the neural level remains unclear. To address this gap, the present study employed functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) hyperscanning technology to assess inter-brain synchronization (IBS) during naturalistic conversations among dyads with three types of autistic trait combinations (20 high-high, 22 high-low, and 18 low-low dyads). The results revealed that the high-high dyads exhibited signi

Highly Sensitive In Vivo Imaging of Bacterial Infections with a Hydrophilicity-Switching, Self-Immobilizing, Near-Infrared Fluorogenic β-Lactamase Probe Enriched within Bacteria.

The emergence of antibiotic resistance, particularly bacterial resistance to β-lactam antibiotics, the most widely prescribed therapeutic agents for infectious diseases, poses a significant threat to public health worldwide. The discovery of effective therapies against antibiotic-resistant pathogens has become an urgent need, necessitating innovative approaches to accelerate the identification and development of novel antibacterial agents. On the other hand, the expression of the β-lactam-hydrolyzing enzyme (β-lactamase), the major cause of bacterial resistance to β-lactam antibiotics, provide

Cerebral oxygen saturation in neonates: a bedside comparison between neonatal and adult NIRS sensors.

BACKGROUND: The majority of neonatal NIRS literature recommends target ranges for cerebral saturation (rScO2) based on data using adult sensors. Neonatal sensors are now commonly used in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). However, there is limited clinical data correlating these two measurements of cerebral oxygenation. METHODS: A prospective observational study was conducted in two NICUs between November 2019 and May 2021. An adult sensor was placed on infants undergoing routine cerebral NIRS monitoring with a neonatal sensor. Time-synchronized rScO2 measurements from both sensors, hea

Towards a point-of-care multimodal spectroscopy instrument for the evaluation of human cardiac tissue.

To demonstrate that point-of-care multimodal spectroscopy using Near-Infrared (NIR) and Raman Spectroscopy (RS) can be used to diagnose human heart tissue. We generated 105 spectroscopic scans, which comprised 4 NIR and 3 RS scans per sample to generate a "multimodal spectroscopic scan" (MSS) for each heart, done across 15 patients, 5 each from the dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM), Ischaemic Heart Disease (IHD) and Normal pathologies. Each of the MSS scans was undertaken in 3 s. Data were entered into machine learning (ML) algorithms to assess accuracy of MSS in diagnosing tissue type. The median

Frontal cortical activation during emotional and non-emotional verbal fluency tests.

There has been growing recognition of the utility of combining the verbal fluency test and functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) to assess brain functioning and to screen for psychiatric disorders. Recently, an emotional analogue of the semantic fluency test (SFT) has been developed that taps partly different processes from conventional verbal fluency tests. Nevertheless, neural processing during the emotional SFT remains elusive. Here, fNIRS was used to compare frontal cortical activation during emotional and non-emotional SFTs. The goal was to determine whether the emotional SFT acti

Abnormally reduced frontal cortex activity during Trail-Making-Test in prodromal parkinson's disease-a fNIRS study.

Parkinson's Disease (PD) is a neurodegenerative disorder leading to typical motor as well as a range of non-motor symptoms, including cognitive decline mainly characterized by executive deficits. The latter are known to appear years before the typical motor signs, thus representing the prodromal phase of PD. However, appropriate methods for measuring executive dysfunction in this context are not well established yet. Traditionally, executive performance is associated with frontal structures. Here, we investigated prodromal, early PD patients and healthy controls regarding their executive funct

Motor Cortex Activation During Writing in Focal Upper-Limb Dystonia: An fNIRS Study.

BACKGROUND: Functional imaging studies have associated dystonia with abnormal activation in motor and sensory brain regions. Commonly used techniques such as functional magnetic resonance imaging impose physical constraints, limiting the experimental paradigms. Functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) offers a new noninvasive possibility for investigating cortical areas and the neural correlates of complex motor behaviors in unconstrained settings. METHODS: We compared the cortical brain activation of patients with focal upper-limb dystonia and controls during the writing task under natu

The long and winding road: Effects of exercise intensity and type upon sustained attention.

Aerobic exercise enhances the ability to sustain attention (peaking at moderate intensities) by stimulating noradrenergic activity, which affects the fronto-parietal attention network. Prior exercise studies examining attention have focused on the influence of exercise intensity, yet few studies have examined the influence of the type of exercise protocol administered. Here, we propose that sustained attention is greater during (a) moderate compared to low intensity exercise, and (b) moderate intensity exercise administered at a varied-load compared to a constant-load but the same overall inte
