Kinematic analysis of articulatory coupling in acquired apraxia of speech post-stroke.

PRIMARY OBJECTIVE: Electromagnetic articulography was employed to investigate the strength of articulatory coupling and hence the degree of functional movement independence between individual articulators in apraxia of speech (AOS). METHODS AND PROCEDURES: Tongue-tip, tongue-back and jaw movement was recorded from five speakers with AOS and a concomitant aphasia (M = 53.6 years; SD = 12.60) during /ta, sa, la, ka/ syllable repetitions, spoken at typical and fast rates of speech. Covariance values were calculated for each articulatory pair to gauge the strength of articulatory coupling. The re

The virtual doctor: An interactive clinical-decision-support system based on deep learning for non-invasive prediction of diabetes.

Artificial intelligence (AI) will pave the way to a new era in medicine. However, currently available AI systems do not interact with a patient, e.g., for anamnesis, and thus are only used by the physicians for predictions in diagnosis or prognosis. However, these systems are widely used, e.g., in diabetes or cancer prediction. In the current study, we developed an AI that is able to interact with a patient (virtual doctor) by using a speech recognition and speech synthesis system and thus can autonomously interact with the patient, which is particularly important for, e.g., rural areas, where

Long-term outcome of speech and language in children after corrective surgery for cyanotic or acyanotic cardiac defects in infancy.

The purpose of this prospective study was to assess whether outcome of speech and language in children 5-10 years after corrective surgery for tetralogy of Fallot (TOF) or ventricular septal defect (VSD) in infancy was influenced by the preoperative condition of hypoxemia or cardiac insufficiency and whether it was associated with perioperative risk factors and neurodevelopmental outcome. A total of 35 unselected children, 19 with TOF and hypoxemia and 16 with VSD and cardiac insufficiency, operated with combined deep hypothermic circulatory arrest and low-flow cardiopulmonary bypass at mean a

Restricted Boltzmann Machines Implemented by Spin-Orbit Torque Magnetic Tunnel Junctions.

Artificial intelligence has surged forward with the advent of generative models, which rely heavily on stochastic computing architectures enhanced by true random number generators with adjustable sampling probabilities. In this study, we develop spin-orbit torque magnetic tunnel junctions (SOT-MTJs), investigating their sigmoid-style switching probability as a function of the driving voltage. This feature proves to be ideally suited for stochastic computing algorithms such as the restricted Boltzmann machines (RBM) prevalent in pretraining processes. We exploit SOT-MTJs as both stochastic samp

Association of specific language impairment (SLI) to the region of 7q31.

FOXP2 (forkhead box P2) was the first gene characterized in which a mutation affects human speech and language abilities. A common developmental language disorder, specific language impairment (SLI), affects 6%-7% of children with normal nonverbal intelligence and has evidence of a genetic basis in familial and twin studies. FOXP2 is located on chromosome 7q31, and studies of other disorders with speech and language impairment, including autism, have found linkage to this region. In the present study, samples from children with SLI and their family members were used to study linkage and associ

Neural mechanisms of language-based learning impairments: insights from human populations and animal models.

The acquisition of speech perception and consequent expression of language represent fundamental aspects of human functioning. Yet roughly 7% to 8% of children who are otherwise healthy and of normal intelligence exhibit unexplained delays and impairments in acquiring these skills. Ongoing research has revealed several key features of language disability that may provide more direct insight into underlying anomalous neural functioning. For example, evidence supports a strong association between basic defects in processing rapidly changing acoustic information and emergent disruptions in speech

Evaluation of a modular palatal lift prosthesis with a silicone velar lamina for hypernasal patients.

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM: Speech bulbs and palatal lift prostheses are used to improve oral-nasal balance in speakers with hypernasality resulting from velopharyngeal dysfunction. Fabricating such speech prostheses is often a protracted process, and the nasopharyngeal impression can be uncomfortable for the client. PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to develop and test a modular palatal lift prosthesis with a silicone velar lamina that can be fabricated without a nasopharyngeal impression. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Six adult participants with different etiologies were treated with both a convent

Objectively Quantifying Pediatric Psychiatric Severity Using Artificial Intelligence, Voice Recognition Technology, and Universal Emotions: Pilot Study for Artificial Intelligence-Enabled Innovation to Address Youth Mental Health Crisis.

BACKGROUND: Providing Psychotherapy, particularly for youth, is a pressing challenge in the health care system. Traditional methods are resource-intensive, and there is a need for objective benchmarks to guide therapeutic interventions. Automated emotion detection from speech, using artificial intelligence, presents an emerging approach to address these challenges. Speech can carry vital information about emotional states, which can be used to improve mental health care services, especially when the person is suffering. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to develop and evaluate automated methods for

Influence of visual analogue of speech envelope, formants, and word onsets on word recognition is not pronounced.

In noisy environments, filtering out the relevant speech signal from the background noise is a major challenge. Visual cues, such as lip movements, can improve speech understanding. This suggests that lip movements carry information about speech features (e.g. speech envelope, formants, word onsets) that can be used to aid speech understanding. Moreover, the isolated visual or tactile presentation of the speech envelope can also aid word recognition. However, the evidence in this area is rather mixed, and formants and word onsets have not been studied in this context. This online study investi

Application of the ICF and ICF-children and youth in children with speech impairment.

Children with speech impairment form a significant part of many speech language pathology caseloads. Traditionally, assessment and intervention with these children has focused on the level of the impairment. However, the World Health Organization's International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF) and ICF- version for Children and Youth provide a framework by which such children can be managed in an holistic manner, with due consideration given to the body structures and functions affected by their impairment, as well as the impact on children's activities and participat
