Radical surgical excision of extensive perianal melanomas on standing horses: Twenty cases.

OBJECTIVE: To report a radical surgical technique for perianal melanomas involving the anal margin in standing horses. STUDY DESIGN: Observational retrospective study. SAMPLE POPULATION: Twenty client-owned horses presented for surgical excision of extensive (≥4 cm) perianal melanomas. METHODS: Demographic data, surgical technique, intraoperative, immediate- and late-postoperative complications were reviewed. RESULTS: All horses (median age 15, Q1-Q3 12 to 17.3 years) were operated under standing sedation and epidural anesthesia. Median hospitalization period was 6.5 days (Q1-Q3 5 to 8.3 d

Prospective evaluation of the surgical stabilization and outcome of canine tibial plateau fractures in three cases.

OBJECTIVE: To report the surgical approaches and stabilization of lateral and medial tibial plateau fractures (TPF), as well as the long-term outcome following repair. STUDY DESIGN: Prospective series of three client-owned dogs. ANIMALS: Three dogs. METHODS: For the two lateral TPF cases (Unger type 41-B1), the surgical approach included separation of the lateral collateral ligament and long digital extensor tendon. The lateral meniscus was elevated to allow visualization of the tibial surface and assess fracture reduction. The first case was repaired using two 2.0 mm lag screws (with washe

Surgical treatment of headshaking by removal of a paracondylar process fragment via modified hyovertebrotomy approach: A detailed anatomical and surgical description in an adult horse.

OBJECTIVE: To describe, in detail, the relevant anatomy and surgical approach to access the paracondylar process (PCP) and report its application in a clinical case of headshaking. ANIMAL: A seven-year-old, mixed breed mare. STUDY DESIGN: Experimental study/case report. METHODS: A seven-year-old mixed breed mare was presented for investigation of acute onset progressing violent headshaking, resulting in the horse falling on multiple occasions. Dermoid cysts formation is a complication of wound pinch grafting in a horse: A case report.

OBJECTIVES: To describe dermoid cyst formation as an uncommon complication of the pinch grafting technique in horses. STUDY DESIGN: Case report. ANIMAL: A 8 year old Arabian gelding. METHODS: Clinical presentation, imaging, treatment, and histopathology records were reviewed. The horse originally presented due to delayed healing of a laceration to the distal aspect of the metatarsus. The wound was treated initially with debridement and it was allowed to fill with healthy granulation tissue prior to pinch grafting. Two months after grafting, the horse started to show self-mutilation behavior

Receiver operating characteristics of computed tomography (CT) compared to cystoscopy in diagnosis of canine ectopic ureters: Thirty-five cases.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of the study was to determine receiver operating characteristics (ROC) of computed tomographic excretory urography (CTEU) in predicting cystoscopic findings of ureteral anatomy. STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective cohort study. ANIMALS: Thirty-five client-owned dogs. METHODS: The medical records of dogs referred for suspected ectopic ureters were reviewed. Inclusion criteria included CTEU findings reported by board-certified radiologists, followed by rigid cystoscopy with or without ureteral cystoscopic laser ablation (CLA). Use of an autologous pericardial patch to repair a post-traumatic caudal vena cava cicatrix in a dog.

OBJECTIVE: To report the use of a pericardial patch graft to repair a post-traumatic caudal vena cava cicatrix in a dog. STUDY DESIGN: Case report. ANIMALS: A 1 year-old Rottweiler presenting with ascites following presumed blunt thoracic trauma. METHODS: Kinking of the caudal vena cava and resultant Budd-Chiari-like syndrome was diagnosed on echocardiography and computed tomographic angiography (CTA). Surgical exploration via right sixth intercostal thoracotomy was performed. Release of the cicatrix was unsuccessful in reducing the pressure gradient and a pericardial patch graft repair of

A novel transcoronal surgical technique for the treatment of cystic lesions of the distal phalanx: A cadaveric study.

OBJECTIVE: To assess the feasibility of a novel transcoronal approach for the treatment of axial type 3 cysts of the palmar/plantar aspect of the distal phalanx (P3). STUDY DESIGN: Ex vivo, experimental study. SAMPLE POPULATION: Ten cadaveric specimens, four forelimbs and six hindlimbs. METHODS: All cadaveric specimens underwent radiographically guided drilling, followed by cortical screw placement. The cartilage was macroscopically assessed after disarticulation of the distal interphalangeal joint. The entry point and trajectory were evaluated with computed tomography. Results were categor

Efficacy of virtual surgical planning and a three-dimensional-printed, patient-specific reduction system to facilitate alignment of diaphyseal tibial fractures stabilized by minimally invasive plate osteosynthesis in dogs: A prospective clinical study.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the efficacy of a three-dimensional (3D)-printed, patient-specific reduction system for aligning diaphyseal tibial fractures stabilized using minimally invasive plate osteosynthesis (MIPO). STUDY DESIGN: Prospective clinical trial. SAMPLE POPULATION: Fifteen client owned dogs. METHODS: Virtual 3D models of both pelvic limbs were created. Pin guides were designed to conform to the proximal and distal tibia. A reduction bridge was designed to align the pin guides based on the guides' spatial location. Guides were 3D printed, sterilized, and applied, in conjunction with

The association between gonadectomy and timing of gonadectomy, and the risk of canine cranial cruciate ligament disease: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

OBJECTIVE: To determine if gonadectomy in dogs is associated with the risk of cranial cruciate ligament disease (CrCLD) and to quantify the magnitude of the association. STUDY DESIGN: Systematic review and meta-analysis. SAMPLE POPULATION: Comparative studies with gonadectomized and entire dogs, with CrCLD as an outcome measure. METHODS: A systematic search of the primary and gray literature was performed. The effect size of the outcome measure was defined as the OR and 95% CI. Subgroup analysis was performed with sex, breed, and age at gonadectomy. A pooled OR (95% CI) was generated from m

OBJECTIVE: To report a case of unilateral lateral coronoid process fragmentation in a dog treated via lateral elbow arthroscopy portals. ANIMAL: A 9-month old male intact English Bulldog. STUDY DESIGN: Case report. METHODS: The dog presented with a history of intermittent right thoracic limb lameness. Orthopedic examination on presentation was unremarkable. Computed tomography of the right thoracic limb was pursued and revealed a mineralized focus along the lateral margin of the lateral coronoid process as well as sclerosis of the medial coronoid process and subtrochlear region of the ulna.

Use of a free proximal ulnar autograft for ipsilateral radial lengthening in a dog with a short radius and subsequent elbow incongruity.

OBJECTIVE: To report the technique and outcome of proximal ulnar autograft transplantation to achieve ipsilateral radial lengthening in a dog with premature closure of both proximal and distal radial physes. STUDY DESIGN: Case report. ANIMALS: An 8-month-old female spayed Border Collie. METHODS: The dog was presented for a grade III/IV left thoracic limb lameness localized to the elbow. Orthogonal radiographs of both forelimbs revealed a 7% length deficit of the left radius and elbow subluxation indices indicative of left elbow incongruity due to suspect premature closure of both radial phy
