Traumatic index extensor tendon attenuation mimicking closed tendon rupture: two case reports.

BACKGROUND: While some traumatic closed index extensor tendon ruptures at the musclotendinous junction have been previously reported, closed index extensor tendon pseudorupture due to intertendinous attenuation is exceedingly rare with only one case report of a gymnastics-related sports injury in the English literature. Herein, we report two non-sports injury related cases of traumatic index extensor tendon attenuation mimicking closed tendon rupture, including the pathological findings and intraoperative video of the attenuated extensor indicis proprius tendon. CASE PRESENTATION: A 28-year-o

Mechanisms and new advances in the efficacy of plant active ingredients in tendon-bone healing.

The tendon-bone interface, known as the tenosynovial union or attachment, can be easily damaged by excessive exercise or trauma. Tendon-bone healing is a significant research topic in orthopedics, encompassing various aspects of sports injuries and postoperative recovery. Surgery is the most common treatment; however, it has limited efficacy in promoting tendon-bone healing and carries a risk of postoperative recurrence, necessitating the search for more effective treatments. Recently, plant-active ingredients such as tanshinone IIA, astragaloside, ginsenoside Rb1, and resveratrol have garnere

Fingertip Injuries: A Review and Update on Management.

Fingertip injuries are among the most common injuries seen in the emergency department. Specific considerations in management include ensuring robust soft-tissue coverage over exposed bone or tendon, maximizing functional length, preserving nail function and appearance, and minimizing chronic pain. Bony injuries are generally managed non-operatively, although select operative indications exist-particularly for jersey finger injuries, unstable fractures, or those with significant translation. Nail bed injuries can be managed with trephination for subungual hematomas or formal nail plate removal

Secondary repair of digital flexor tendons in outpatient clinic.

A total of 32 digits, including 3 thumbs, were reconstructed in an outpatient clinic. The patients were allowed to go home 3-4 hours after the operation. The patients had injury to the flexor tendon in no man's land without other complications except for an injury to the digital nerve in 6 cases. The tendon was reconstructed secondarily using a free graft. The minimum follow-up time was 6 months. The results were classified in three ways. With all methods the results, which were deemed satisfactory in 79% and poor in 21%, reached the average standard for this type of repair. Increasing age of

Muscle strain injuries.

One of the most common injuries seen in the office of the practicing physician is the muscle strain. Until recently, little data were available on the basic science and clinical application of this basic science for the treatment and prevention of muscle strains. Studies in the last 10 years represent action taken on the direction of investigation into muscle strain injuries from the laboratory and clinical fronts. Findings from the laboratory indicate that certain muscles are susceptible to strain injury (muscles that cross multiple joints or have complex architecture). These muscles have a s

Optimized design of an enthesis-mimicking suture anchor-tendon hybrid graft for mechanically robust bone-tendon repair.

Repair of functionally graded biological interfaces requires joining dissimilar materials such as hard bone to soft tendon/ligament, with re-injuries/re-tears expected to be minimized by incorporating biomimicking, stress-reducing features within grafts. At bone-tendon interfaces (entheses), stress can be reduced via angled insertion, geometric flaring, mechanical gradation, and interdigitation of tissues. Here, we incorporated enthesis attributes into 3D in silico and physical models of a unique suture anchor-tendon hybrid graft (SATHG) and investigated their effects on stress reduction via f

Posttraumatic stenosing tendovaginitis of the fourth extensor tendon compartment: a case report.

INTRODUCTION: While stenosing tendovaginitis of the first extensor tendon compartment is frequently encountered in hand surgical practice, similar pathologies in other extensor tendon compartments are rare and can, thus, be overlooked or misdiagnosed. This case report aims to point out the relevance and intricacies of these pathologies. CASE: This report presents a case of posttraumatic stenosing tendovaginitis of the fourth extensor tendon compartment, developed five months after suffering a crush injury to his index finger with simultaneous stump trauma to the dorsal wrist. The patient's ma

Injury of the distal biceps at the musculotendinous junction.

Although complete rupture of the distal biceps tendon at the osseous insertion has been well documented in the literature, musculotendinous ruptures of the distal biceps remain exceedingly uncommon. In this report, we present a series of 6 distal biceps musculotendinous ruptures in 6 different patients, verified either with magnetic resonance imaging or by direct visualization at surgical exploration. In 5 of 6 patients, a single traumatic injury was reported, whereas the sixth reported 2 episodes of injury and pain occurring approximately 1 week apart. A common mechanism of injury seems to pr

Management of posterior interosseous nerve (PIN) palsies after distal biceps tendon repair using a single incision technique- a conclusive approach to diagnostics and therapy.

Complete distal ruptures of the biceps brachii tendon are rather rare and surgical reinsertion is the gold standard. Recently, one incision approaches for the refixation of the distal biceps tendon have been popularized with the introduction of a single-incision approach employing a trans-radial cortical button fixation. Since the introduction of this fixation technique we have seen more iatrogenic lesions to the posterior interosseous nerve (PIN) after not having seen any PIN lesions with 2 incision biceps refixation techniques over the last 5 years. Several patients with iatrogenic PIN affec

Mechanical Considerations for Electrospun Nanofibers in Tendon and Ligament Repair.

Electrospun nanofibers possess unique qualities such as nanodiameter, high surface area to volume ratio, biomimetic architecture, and tunable chemical and electrical properties. Numerous studies have demonstrated the potential of nanofibrous architecture to direct cell morphology, migration, and more complex biological processes such as differentiation and extracellular matrix (ECM) deposition through topographical guidance cues. These advantages have created great interest in electrospun fibers for biomedical applications, including tendon and ligament repair. Electrospun nanofibers, despite

Sonographic Overview of Usual and Unusual Disorders of the Rectus Femoris Tendon Origins.

Rectus femoris muscle proximal injuries are not rare conditions. The proximal rectus femoris tendinous anatomy is complex and may be affected by traumatic, microtraumatic, or nontraumatic disorders. A good knowledge of the proximal rectus femoris anatomy allows a better understanding of injury and disorder patterns. A new sonographic lateral approach was recently described to assess the indirect head of the proximal rectus femoris, hence allowing for a complete sonographic assessment of the proximal rectus femoris tendons. This article will review sonographic features of direct, indirect, and
