Violation of rhythmic expectancies can elicit late frontal gamma activity nested in theta oscillations.

Rhythm processing involves building expectations according to the hierarchical temporal structure of auditory events. Although rhythm processing has been addressed in the context of predictive coding, the properties of the oscillatory response in different cortical areas are still not clear. We explored the oscillatory properties of the neural response to rhythmic incongruence and the cross-frequency coupling between multiple frequencies to further investigate the mechanisms underlying rhythm perception. We designed an experiment to investigate the neural response to rhythmic deviations in whi

Somatosensory Temporal Discrimination Threshold in Patients with Cognitive Disorders.

BACKGROUND: The temporal processing of sensory information can be evaluated by testing the somatosensory temporal discrimination threshold (STDT), which is defined as the shortest interstimulus interval needed to recognize two sequential sensory stimuli as separate in time. The STDT requires the functional integrity of the basal ganglia and of the somatosensory cortex (S1). Although there is evidence that time processing is impaired in patients with Alzheimer's disease (AD), no study has yet investigated STDT in patients with various degree of cognitive impairment. OBJECTIVE: The aim of our s

The buzz-lag effect.

In the flash-lag illusion, a brief visual flash and a moving object presented at the same location appear to be offset with the flash trailing the moving object. A considerable amount of studies investigated the visual flash-lag effect, and flash-lag-like effects have also been observed in audition, and cross-modally between vision and audition. In the present study, we investigate whether a similar effect can also be observed when using only haptic stimuli. A fast vibration (or buzz, lasting less than 20 ms) was applied to the moving finger of the observers and employed as a "haptic flash." P

Neurophysiological correlates of abnormal somatosensory temporal discrimination in dystonia.

BACKGROUND: Somatosensory temporal discrimination threshold is often prolonged in patients with dystonia. Previous evidence suggested that this might be caused by impaired somatosensory processing in the time domain. Here, we tested if other markers of reduced inhibition in the somatosensory system might also contribute to abnormal somatosensory temporal discrimination in dystonia. METHODS: Somatosensory temporal discrimination threshold was measured in 19 patients with isolated cervical dystonia and 19 age-matched healthy controls. We evaluated temporal somatosensory inhibition using paired-

Eye tracking the face in the crowd task: why are angry faces found more quickly?

Among a crowd of distractor faces, threatening or angry target faces are identified more quickly and accurately than are nonthreatening or happy target faces, a finding known as the "face in the crowd effect." Two perceptual explanations of the effect have been proposed: (1) the "target orienting" hypothesis (i.e., threatening targets orient attention more quickly than do nonthreatening targets and (2) the "distractor processing" hypothesis (i.e., nonthreatening distractors paired with a threatening target are processed more efficiently than vice versa, leading to quicker detection of threaten

Multiple aspects of neural activity during reaching preparation in the medial posterior parietal area V6A.

The posterior parietal cortex is involved in the visuomotor transformations occurring during arm-reaching movements. The medial posterior parietal area V6A has been shown to be implicated in reaching execution, but its role in reaching preparation has not been sufficiently investigated. Here, we addressed this issue exploring the neural correlates of reaching preparation in V6A. Neural activity of single cells during the instructed delay period of a foveated Reaching task was compared with the activity in the same delay period during a Detection task. In this latter task, animals fixated the t

A common first-order time-to-contact based control of hand-closure initiation in catching and grasping.

To catch or grasp an object, the initiation of hand closure has to be coordinated with the relative movement between hand and object. In search of a common control of the initiation of hand closure for both tasks (van de Kamp, Bongers, & Zaal, 2010), the authors studied two tasks, catching while keeping the hand stationary and prehension. They showed that the initiation of hand closure could well be based on first-order time-to-contact in the prehension task but not in the catching task studied. The current study tested if the fact that the hand-object gap was closed at a linear rate made that

Exogenous phasic alerting and spatial orienting in mild cognitive impairment compared to healthy ageing: Study outcome is related to target response.

Whether or not attentional mechanisms such as phasic alerting, spatial cueing and inhibition of return (IOR) remain intact in adults with Alzheimer's disease (AD) and mild cognitive impairment (MCI) remains a matter of debate. This is possibly the result of inter-study outcome variation caused by the adoption of different methodological components by different research groups. Here we investigated the influence of methodological factors upon study outcome, using a Posner-type exogenous cueing paradigm with amnestic MCI patients and healthy older controls. Specifically, we compared results when

Electrophysiological correlates of perceptual reversals for three different types of multistable images.

Electrophysiological recordings were made in 21 observers to investigate whether differences in signature components (P1, N1, selection negativity [SN]) would be revealed during perceptual reversals of three different multistable figures. Using a lattice of Necker cubes as a stimulus, J. Kornmeier and M. Bach (2004, 2005) reported differences in P1 amplitudes as well a broad reversal-related negativity occurring 200-400 ms poststimulus. The current study investigated whether these event-related potentials of Necker cube reversals represent general "perceptual switching" mechanisms and would, t

Hypomanic trait is associated with a hypovigilant automatic attentional response to social cues of danger.

OBJECTIVES: Hypomania in bipolar disorders is characterized by disinhibited, fearless and reward-seeking behavior. This behavioral pattern suggests that early and automatic responding to socio-emotional cues such as facial expressions might be aberrant in hypomania. The present study tested the predictions that participants selected on hypomania-like trait would show hypovigilant responses to facial cues of danger and increased responses to facial cues of reward. METHODS: From a group of 513, the 16 most trait-hypomanic individuals were selected by use of a shortened version of an established

Two types of image generation: evidence for left and right hemisphere processes.

The results from seven experiments provide evidence that visual mental images can be generated by either the left or right cerebral hemisphere, but in different ways. Subjects were cued to form images within a grid or within a set of four corner brackets; a single X mark was enclosed within each stimulus, and the subjects were to determine whether the X mark was enclosed within each stimulus, and the subjects were to determine whether the X mark would have fallen on an imaged pattern. When subjects memorized descriptions of how parts were arranged, they could later form images of the composite

Cholinergic receptor blockade impairs spatial localization by use of distal cues in the rat.

Spatial localization was studied in the Morris water maze. The task required rats to escape from cool water (made opaque by milk) by finding a submerged, invisible platform located at a fixed place within the room. The start point was varied randomly, and there was no local cues to indicate the position of the platform. After training, the platform was moved. Rats subjected to central cholinergic receptor blockade with atropine sulfate were compared with normal rats and rats receiving peripheral cholinergic blockade with atropine methylnitrate. The controls for the use of search strategies, as

No one sees you quite like I do: The social relations model in personality perception.

The Social Relations Model (SRM) offers a comprehensive framework for examining how individuals perceive personality traits in others, decomposing personality perceptions into perceiver, target, and relationship effects. These components demonstrate meaningful variation across traits, time, classes of relationships, and levels of acquaintance. Nevertheless, while target and perceiver effects have been well-documented, the relationship effect, capturing idiosyncratic, dyad-specific personality perceptions, remains underexplored despite accounting for substantial variance and predicting meaningf

Perceptual consequences of online group speech treatment for individuals with Parkinson's disease: A pilot study case series.

PURPOSE: We examined perceptual changes in the domains of ease of understanding, naturalness, and speech severity, as well as changes in self-perceptions of voice disability, following an online group speech treatment program for people with Parkinson's disease (PD) conducted during the COVID-19 pandemic. METHOD: Seven speakers with hypokinetic dysarthria associated with PD participated in a university and community-based online group speech program for 10 weeks. Speech recordings occurred remotely 1 week before and 1 week after the online program. Thirty naïve listeners rated ease of underst

"Alone, I wouldn't have known what to do": a qualitative study on social support during labor and delivery in Mexico.

This article presents some of the most relevant qualitative results of a trial to evaluate the effects of the provision of psychosocial support to first-time mothers during labor, childbirth and in the immediate postpartum period in a social security hospital in Mexico City. The article focuses on the experiences of mothers who have received psychosocial support from a doula (the term doula is used to identify a woman who provides continuous support to a woman during labor. delivery and the immediate postpartum period) and compares them with the experiences of those women who gave birth follow

Social Priming in L1 Japanese Speech Perception.

Research on social priming in speech perception has focused on Western contexts and typically examined aggregate effects rather than temporal dynamics. To address these gaps, we investigated how social primes modulate L1 Japanese speech perception over time using a visual matched-guise transcription-in-noise task. University students in the Tokyo area transcribed native Japanese sentences while viewing one of four visual primes: an East Asian face, a Southeast Asian face, a Black face, or an East Asian face with a Chinese name. Results revealed nonlinear learning trajectories, with accuracy im

Using a surrogate human digital twin to model embodied perception and cognition for neuroergonomics.

Understanding and predicting human behavior in dynamic, multisensory environments is one of the central challenges in neuroergonomics and human-centered artificial intelligence. Computational neuroscience provides mechanistic theories of perception, attention, and decision-making, but these insights have not yet been fully integrated into real-time digital representations of human physical behavior. Conversely, Human Digital Twins (HDTs) can successfully represent human physical characteristics, especially biomechanics and physiology, but remain limited in capturing the added complexities of e
