UNLABELLED: A dentigerous cyst was treated with enucleation and coronectomy of the associated tooth to minimize the risk of inferior alveolar nerve damage, resulting from direct surgical trauma or indirectly from intra-operative or post-operative jaw fracture. Radiographic monitoring over 33 months confirmed migration of the roots through healed bone and progressive obliteration of the residual pulp canal chamber. These observations are not associated with failure of the technique but are, in fact, commonly observed in successful cases of coronectomy. A brief discussion of the risks versus ben

Dental trauma continues to cause loss of teeth, particularly in the anterior region of the maxilla. Reimplanting the tooth with the fragment repositioned by turning it through 180 degrees presents a conservative treatment option that makes it possible to keep a tooth, at first indicated for extraction, functioning and with a satisfactory esthetic appearance.

The problem of inferior alveolar nerve involvement during the removal of lower third molars is a clinical and medicolegal issue. Because the results of damage to the inferior alveolar nerve are unpredictable in that many cases do recover but some do not, it is preferable to carry out a technique that may reduce the possibility of this involvement. The technique of coronectomy, partial odontectomy, or deliberate root retention is one such technique to protect the inferior alveolar nerve that has been studied in the past but does not currently enjoy a strong body of support. The technique of cor

Dental anatomical anomalies having a significant impact on endodontic diagnosis and treatment are the talon cusp, tuberculated premolars, three-rooted mandibular molars, and C-shaped molars. Asian and Pacific Islander ethnic groups have the highest percentage of these dental anatomical anomalies compared to the general population. As the population of Asians and Pacific Islanders continues to grow in California and other western states, dentists should be aware of the diagnostic and treatment complexities associated with specific patient groups.

PURPOSE: Lingual nerve damage following lower third molar surgery remains a clinical problem. The traditional approach in the United States has been a buccal approach avoiding exposure or surgery on the lingual side of the crest of the ridge. An alternative technique is to deliberately expose the lingual tissues and retract the lingual nerve lingually before tooth removal. This study reports a trial of this technique.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Patients had removal of their lower third molars carried out using a technique that raises a lingual flap in addition to a buccal flap and places a specia

Short root anomaly is a rare dental disorder affecting tooth root development. It is characterized by reduced root-to-crown ratios (1:1 or less) and rounded apices. The short roots introduce a potential complication during orthodontic treatment. This case report describes managing a girl with generalized short root anomaly, an open bite, impacted maxillary canines, and a bilateral crossbite. In the first phase of treatment, the maxillary canines were extracted, and the transverse discrepancy was corrected with a bone-borne transpalatal distractor. In the second phase of treatment, a mandibular

The current case study evaluated the effect of vital pulp therapy on a human dental pulp after a long-term period using micro-computed tomography (MCT) for the first time. In the presented report, the successful outcomes of full pulpotomy using calcium-enriched mixture (CEM) cement on an irreversible pulpitis case were documented clinically/radiographically over 5 years. Due to an unrestorable crown fracture at the 5-year recall, the tooth was extracted and evaluated by MCT; the images showed that CEM pulpotomy allowed the dental pulp to create complete dentinal bridges without pulp canal obli

Coronectomy involves removal of a crown from roots of a healthy tooth in healthy patients indicated to prevent inferior alveolar nerve injury in a high risk case. Since the original paper in 2005 ( 2005; 43: 7-12) describing a prospective randomised study on coronectomy, there has been a lot of interest in this procedure and it has become routine practice in many oral surgery departments within the UK and USA. A significant variance in thresholds for prescribing coronectomy and also for the technique of its delivery has been highlighted by a recent review. This has resulted in frequent queries

BACKGROUND: This article reviews the use of temporary anchorage devices (TADs) for maxillary molar intrusion.
TYPES OF STUDIES REVIEWED: The authors reviewed clinical, radiographic and histologic studies and case reports. The studies provided information regarding the application, placement and biological response of orthodontic TADs.
RESULTS: TAD-supported molar intrusion is controlled and timely and may be accomplished without the need for full-arch brackets and wires. Supraerupted maxillary first molars can be intruded 3 to 8 millimeters in 7.5 months (approximately 0.5-1.0 mm per month),

Glandular odontogenic cysts (GOCs) are rare developmental odontogenic cysts that may pose significant diagnostic challenges due to their overlapping clinical and radiographic features with other odontogenic lesions. We report a case of a 29-year-old woman who presented with pain and restricted mouth opening associated with an impacted right mandibular third molar. Cone-beam computed tomography revealed a well-defined pericoronal radiolucency attached to the crown of the impacted tooth and extending to the distal root of the adjacent second molar. Based on the characteristic pericoronal locatio

INTRODUCTION: CD44 is a transmembrane glycoprotein with various biological functions. Histologic studies have shown that CD44 is strongly expressed in odontoblasts at the appositional stage of tooth development. We investigated whether CD44 is involved in the mineralization of dental pulp cells.
METHODS: Ten human third molars with incomplete root formation were collected and processed for immunohistochemistry of CD44. Dental pulp cells isolated from another 5 human third molars were assayed for their viability, alkaline phosphatase activity, and alizarin red staining in vitro after silencing

The successful integration of periodontal and restorative dentistry for both natural teeth and implants requires knowledge and application of both mechanical and biological principles. In areas of aesthetic concern, an adequate band of attached gingiva can increase patient comfort, reduce the probability of gingival recession following tooth preparation and simplify restorative procedures. While some restorative margins need to be placed at or below the margin of the free gingiva, this should be considered to be a compromise, and margins should not be placed more than 0.5 mm into a healthy gin

PURPOSE: Maxillary third molars (MTMs) are frequently utilized as donor teeth in autogenous tooth transplantation (ATT). This study aimed to characterize and grade MTMs' CBCT features to inform ATT operation.
METHODS: This retrospective CBCT analysis evaluated 800 MTMs from 537 patients regarding tooth morphology, root canal configuration, and impaction status. A CBCT-based binary complexity grading for MTM autotransplantation was established, and its clinical relevance to the operative difficulty of ATT and its adjunctive procedures (root canal treatment, RCT) was analyzed in 26 ATT cases us

Background. Orthodontic extrusion (OE), or forced eruption, is a conservative technique used to recover teeth affected by coronal fractures, traumatic intrusions, or severe caries. It involves applying light, continuous forces to induce vertical tooth movement, promoting tissue remodeling through periodontal ligament stimulation. Materials and Methods. This narrative review included studies investigating OE as a therapeutic approach for the management of deep or subgingival carious lesions, traumatic dental injuries (such as intrusion or fracture), or for alveolar ridge augmentation in implant

The lateral periodontal cyst (LPC) is a rare, noninflammatory developmental odontogenic cyst typically associated with the roots of vital teeth. Often asymptomatic, LPCs are frequently discovered incidentally during routine radiographic examinations. This case report presents the diagnosis and treatment of an LPC in a 56-year-old female and discusses relevant diagnostic and therapeutic considerations. A 56-year-old female patient, presenting for a routine recall appointment, was found to have a radiolucent area lateral to the mesial root of tooth #44 on radiographic examination. Clinical findi
