Marker-independent vibrational spectroscopy imaging recognizes the hypoxia effect in the human brain endothelium.

Brain microvascular endothelial cells experience hypoxic conditions in several neurodegenerative disease processes and the underlying mechanisms still need to be explored. Current imaging modalities and biochemical assays require many specific markers that should be detected to identify the hypoxic response, especially at a level of single cells. This study presents a single-cell molecular imaging approach utilizing Fourier-Transform Infrared and Raman spectroscopy. Those methods enable the simultaneous detection of proteins, lipids, and nucleic acids encoded in their unique vibrational finger…

Effects of external body vibrations on cognitive performance through brain-cardio-respiratory dynamics.

External body vibrations (EBV) affect the human physiological and cognitive states. Here we construct a neurophysiological model integrating a cortical model and the cardiovascular system, exploring impacts of EBV on physiological and cognitive function. We adopted a reservoir computing model for cortical dynamics to investigate cognitive effects, focusing on binocular rivalry. This model successfully replicated changes in human perceptual alternation observed during voluntary respiratory control and cycling exercise. Our simulation indicates that EBV exerts frequency-dependent effects on perc…

Ultrafast optical modulation of vibrational strong coupling in ReCl(CO)3(2,2-bipyridine).

Polaritons - hybrid light-matter states formed from the strong coupling of a bright molecular transition with a confined photonic mode - may offer new opportunities for optical control of molecular behavior. Vibrational strong coupling (VSC) has been reported to impact ground-state chemical reactivity, but its influence on electronic excited-state dynamics remains unexplored. Here, we take a first step towards excited-state VSC by demonstrating optical modulation of the ReCl(CO)3(bpy), (bpy = 2,2-bipyridine) complex under VSC using femtosecond ultraviolet (UV)-pump/infrared (IR)-probe spectros…

Tissue analysis by vibrational spectroscopy in Hirschsprung disease: feasibility and potential as a new intraoperative tool.

Hirschsprung disease is a congenital anomaly characterised by an absence of innervation in the colon. The current diagnosis, which involves … g between functional and non-functional parts of the colon by focussing on the muscularis. As such, vibrational spectroscopy can highlight biochemical differences that are not visible using standard histology. This proof-of-concept study suggests that vibrational spectroscopy is a candidate method for diagnosing Hirschsprung disease, paving the way for intr …

Relationship Between Occupational Exposure to Noise and Vibrations and Vertigo: A Prospective Case-Control Study.

Background/Objectives: It is known that balance disorders involve occupational hazards. However, the inverse relationship (between certain occupations and an increased incidence of vertigo or dizziness) has been scarcely studied. The objective of this work was to analyze the occupation of a group of patients with vertigo compared to the economically active general population and to evaluate the prevalence of occupational noise and/or vibration exposure in both groups. Methods: A prospective cross-sectional, observational, case-control study was carried out, including 393 patients (193: Meniere…

Bromine isotope splitting in vibrational spectra of bromoform by time-resolved transient transmission spectroscopy.

The femtosecond pump-probe technique, i.e. the transient transmission spectroscopy, has been used for the first time, to detect the vibrational spectra of symmetric fundamentals ν2 and ν3 in bromoform and chloroform. The spectra were obtained by fast Fourier transforms of the time domain signals. For both, CHCl3 and CHBr3, there are four isotopologues contributing to the spectra, due to the existence of two stable isotopes; chlorine, 35Cl and 37Cl, and bromine, 79Br and 81Br, respectively. While for chloroform the isotope splitting of the ν3 spectral band can be observed even in the spontaneou…

Effects of Vibration on Accelerating Orthodontic Tooth Movement in Clinical and In Vivo Studies: A Systematic Review.

This systematic review aims to assess the impact of high (>30 Hz) and low (≤30 Hz) frequency vibrations on orthodontic tooth movement (OTM). Several articles were collected through a systematic search in the databases MEDLINE and SCOPUS, following PRISMA methodology and using a PICO question. Relevant information on selected articles was extracted, and the quality of each study was assessed by the quality assessment tools EPHPP, ROBINS-1 and STAIR. Out of 350 articles, 30 were chosen. Low-frequency vibrations did not seem to accelerate OTM with aligners or fixed appliances, despite some positi…

Parametric Study of the Influence of Nonlinear Elastic Characteristics of Rail Pads on Wheel-Rail Vibrations.

The rail pad is the elastic element between the rail and the sleeper that has the role of absorbing the mechanical stresses from the rail and reducing the vibrations and shocks generated by wheel-rail interactions. In this paper, the problem of the influence of the variability of the nonlinear load-deformation characteristic of rail pads (resulting from the manufacturing process) on wheel-rail vibrations is investigated. The limit load-deformation characteristics of a manufactured rail pad and the medium load-deformation characteristic resulting as the arithmetic mean of the two are considered…

Exploring the Influence of the Phosphorus-Heteroatom Substitution in Nicotine on Its Electronic and Vibrational Spectroscopic Properties.

The influence of phosphorus substitution of nitrogen in heterocyclic compounds on the vibrational spectroscopy as well as frontier molecular orbitals are analyzed. Nicotine with two nitrogen atoms in its structure is taken as the sample system to be studied computationally. By replacing the nitrogen atom in one or both rings of this molecule with phosphorus, three nicotine derivatives are created. The vibrational circular dichroism and infrared spectra of these four molecules in their monomer state, as well as the assemblies up to trimers are determined. The aforementioned spectra are calculat…

Ultrafast dynamics of CN radical reactions with chloroform solvent under vibrational strong coupling.

Polariton chemistry may provide a new means to control molecular reactivity, permitting remote, reversible modification of reaction energetics, kinetics, and product yields. A considerable body of experimental and theoretical work has already demonstrated that strong coupling between a molecular vibrational mode and the confined electromagnetic field of an optical cavity can alter chemical reactivity without external illumination. However, the mechanisms underlying cavity-altered chemistry remain unclear in large part because the experimental systems examined previously are too complex for det…

Numerical study on high-frequency effect of rail corrugation on subway-induced environmental vibrations.

Rail corrugation is a common phenomenon in railway engineering, but its high-frequency effects on environmental vibrations are neglected in most previous research. Therefore, a hybrid numerical method was proposed in this paper to analyze subway-induced ground vibrations, especially in the high-frequency range caused by rail corrugation. The analysis model composed of a three-dimensional (3D) load generation subsystem and a two-dimensional (2D) wave propagation subsystem was established based on the vehicle-track coupling method and finite element method, and validated by the measured data. Th…

Vibrational Spectroscopy for the Triage of Traumatic Brain Injury Computed Tomography Priority and Hospital Admissions.

Computed tomography (CT) brain imaging is routinely used to support clinical decision-making in patients with traumatic brain injury (TBI). Only 7% of scans, however, demonstrate evidence of TBI. The other 93% of scans contribute a significant cost to the healthcare system and a radiation risk to patients. There may be better strategies to identify which patients, particularly those with mild TBI, are at risk of deterioration and require hospital admission. We introduce a blood serum liquid biopsy that utilizes attenuated total reflectance (ATR)-Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy w

The Photoluminescence and Vibrational Properties of Black Phosphorous Sheets Chemically/Electrochemically Functionalized in the Presence of Diphenylamine.

In this work, new information concerning the optical properties of black phosphorus (BP) sheets chemically/electrochemically functionalized with diphenyl amine (DPA) and its macromolecular compound (poly(diphenylamine) (PDPA)) in the absence/presence of phosphotungstic acid (PTA) is reported. Raman scattering and FTIR spectroscopy studies indicate that the interaction of BP with PTA leads to the elimination of the PxOy layer onto the surface of the BP sheets. In the case of the chemical interaction of BP with DPA, the reaction product corresponds to DPA chemically functionalized BP sheets havi

Molecular organization of dengue fusion peptide in phospholipid monolayers revealed by tensiometry and vibrational spectroscopy.

The interaction of Dengue fusion peptide (FLAg) in selected lipid Langmuir monolayers was characterized with surface pressure-area isotherms and infrared spectroscopy to investigate the role of the membrane charge and molecular organization in the peptide-lipid binding. Surface pressure-area isotherms were employed to analyze the thermodynamic and mechanical properties of the FLAg-lipid monolayer, showing that charged lipid monolayers showed different peptide adsorption patterns for an optimized peptide concentration (maximum membrane adsorption). Polarization modulation infrared reflection-ab

CRISPR/Cas9 mediated somatic gene therapy for insertional mutations: the vibrator mouse model.

Somatic gene therapy remains technically challenging, especially in the central nervous system (CNS). Efficiency of gene delivery, efficacy in recipient cells, and proportion of cells required for overall benefit are the key points needed to be considered in any therapeutic approach. Recent efforts have demonstrated the efficacy of RNA-guided nucleases such as CRISPR/Cas9 in correcting point mutations or removing dominant mutations. Here we used viral delivered Cas9 plasmid and two guide RNAs to remove a recessive insertional mutation, vibrator (vb), in the mouse brain. The vb mice expressed ∼

Development and Preliminary Validation of a Pneumatic Focal Vibration System to the Mitigation of Post-Stroke Spasticity.

Some evidence has demonstrated that focal vibration (FV) plays an important role in the mitigation of spasticity. However, the research on developing the FV system to mitigate the spasticity effectively has been seldom reported. To relieve post-stroke spasticity, a new pneumatic FV system has been proposed in this paper. An image processing approach, in which the edge of vibration actuator was identified by the Canny edge detector, was utilized to quantify this system's parameters: the frequency ranging from 44 Hz to 128 Hz and the corresponding amplitude. Taking one FV protocol with the frequ…

Theoretical investigation of the enhancement of positron affinity by the vibration and dimerization of non-polar carbon disulfide.

The positronic bound state for the non-polar carbon disulfide (CS2) has been experimentally identified, although previous theoretical investigations, which were dedicated to studying the positronic CS2 monomer, could not reasonably reproduce the experimentally measured positron affinity. In the present study, we performed analysis of the vibrational averaged positron affinity for the positronic CS2 dimer, [C2S4; e+], using the Hartree-Fock and configuration interaction levels of the multi-component molecular orbital method combined with the self-consistent field level of the vibrational variat…
