Effect of Impaired Stereoscopic Vision on Large-Scale Resting-State Functional Network Connectivity in Comitant Exotropia Patients.

BACKGROUND: Comitant exotropia (CE) is a common eye movement disorder, characterized by impaired eye movements and stereoscopic vision. CE patients reportedly exhibit changes in the central nervous system. However, it remains unclear whether large-scale brain network changes occur in CE patients. PURPOSE: This study investigated the effects of exotropia and stereoscopic vision dysfunction on large-scale brain networks in CE patients via independent component analysis (ICA). METHODS: Twenty-eight CE patients (mean age, 15.80 ± 2.46 years) and 27 healthy controls (HCs; mean age, 16.00 ± 2.68 y

Sildenafil-Associated Anterior Ischemic Optic Neuropathy with Optic Nerve Enhancement in Brain Magnetic Resonance Imaging and Pleocytosis in Cerebrospinal Fluid: A Case Report.

INTRODUCTION: Anterior ischemic optic neuropathy (AION) is characterized by an acute, painless decrease in visual acuity due to restricted blood flow to the optic nerve. It is categorized into two types: arteritic AION and non-arteritic AION, which is more prevalent and is also associated with the use of sildenafil. CASE PRESENTATION: The patient was a 64-year-old male who presented with sudden, painless, blurred vision in both eyes, progressing to near blindness with minimal light perception. The patient had taken sildenafil the night before symptom onset. A thorough workup, including histor

[Myasthenia as the cause of vertical diplopia in the elderly].

Myasthenia gravis is a well-understood autoimmune disease of the neuromuscular synapse that is medicinally treatable with favorable results and therefore should not be overlooked in the differential diagnostic evaluation of vertical diplopia. Myasthenia is primarily a clinical diagnosis. Positive indications include double vision of fluctuating severity, diurnal variations, double vision after lengthy gaze fixation on a distant object and in the primary position as well as diplopia in various visual directions, often associated with a varying extent of ptosis. Clinical tests are the Simpson te

Ophthalmic manifestations of biotinidase deficiency: report of a case and review of literature.

INTRODUCTION: Biotinidase deficiency (BD) is an inherited autosomal recessive metabolic disorder. BD has been associated with optic nerve atrophy, eye infections, and retinopathy. The most prevalent ophthalmic manifestation of BD is optic atrophy, which might be misdiagnosed as multiple sclerosis or neuromyelitis optica, especially in late-onset BD cases. METHODS: In this article, we report a 9-year-old boy with gradual vision loss. Ophthalmologic examination, Brain MRI, and several laboratory tests such as Aquaporin-4 IgG level and biotinidase level were done on the patient. RESULTS: Bilate

Sensitivity to Binocular Disparity is Reduced by Mild Traumatic Brain Injury.

PURPOSE: The impairment of visual functions is one of the most common complaints following mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI). Traumatic brain injury-associated visual deficits include blurred vision, reading problems, and eye strain. In addition, previous studies have found evidence that TBI can diminish early cortical visual processing, particularly for second-order stimuli. We investigated whether cortical processing of binocular disparity is also affected by mTBI. METHODS: In order to investigate the influence of mTBI on global stereopsis, we measured the quick Disparity Sensitivity Funct

Charles F. Prentice Award Lecture 2006: a neuron doctrine for glaucoma.

The glaucomas are a group of potentially blinding optic neuropathies that are characterized by progressive pathological losses of the retinal ganglion cells (RGCs) and their axons that form the optic nerve. The causes are unknown and, therefore, the diagnosis and assessment of progression of disease depends on ophthalmic testing to identify and quantify clinical characteristics of glaucomatous neuropathy, such as the pattern of visual field defects and/or thinning of the retinal nerve fiber layer. To relate these clinical measurements to the basic pathology of glaucoma, a neuron doctrine for g

Radiotherapy for nasopharyngeal carcinoma: Effect on the eye 10 years later: A case report.

A patient who had previously received radiotherapy for a nasopharyngeal carcinoma was rightfully discharged from otorhinolaryngology and oncology once treatment was completed. After 10 years, the patient presented with visual loss in one eye and was found to have radiation retinopathy. This case highlights the importance of recognising the effects that radiation administered to structures near the eye can have on vision. The latency of this case demonstrates the need for routine eye tests in patients who have undergone radiotherapy near the orbit. Prompt recognition and referral to ophthalmolo

The pattern of retinal ganglion cell dysfunction in Leber hereditary optic neuropathy.

Leber inherited optic neuropathy (LHON) is characterized by subacute bilateral loss of central vision due to dysfunction and loss of retinal ganglion cells (RGCs). Comprehensive visual electrophysiological investigations (including pattern reversal visual evoked potentials, pattern electroretinography and the photopic negative response) performed on 13 patients with acute and chronic LHON indicate early impairment of RGC cell body function and severe axonal dysfunction. Temporal, spatial and chromatic psychophysical tests performed on 7 patients with acute LHON and 4 patients with chronic LHON

Vestibular evaluation--electronystagmography, rotational testing, and posturography.

This report describes a battery of tests that is utilized by several clinical laboratories to investigate vestibular and balance function. The electronystagmogram evaluates eye movements, inner ear function, brainstem function and cerebellar function. Sinusoidal vertical axis rotation is a sensitive measure of horizontal semicircular canal function that is often complimentary to the caloric stimulation portion of the electronystagmogram. Visual-vestibular interaction rotation testing is designed to evaluate brainstem, cerebellar and oculomotor function. Dynamic posturography facilitates measur

Chronic Retinal Detachment Associated with Central Retinal Artery Occlusion.

An unusual case of central retinal artery occlusion (CRAO) occurring in the setting of a chronic retinal detachment was reported. A 47-year old woman with a history of slowly declining peripheral vision in her left eye presented with acute painless hand motion vision. She had an extensive chronic retinal detachment in the left eye with multiple demarcation lines and marked whitening of the fovea. Her right eye was normal. A CRAO was confirmed with fluorescein angiography and optical coherence tomography testing. An exhaustive work-up was negative and there was no history of antecedent trauma.
