Lymphatic filariasis (LF) is targeted for worldwide elimination. In Yemen, all mainland implementation units met the WHO criteria for stopping mass drug administration (MDA) after 5 rounds. However, in Socotra Island these criteria were not met. Our study evaluated the efficacy of applying expanded polystyrene beads (EPBs) on the Culex population and the effect on LF transmission. Human and mosquito surveys were conducted in 40 randomly selected households in Hadibo (capital of Socotra) before and after application of EPBs. The EPBs intervention resulted in a reduction in mosquito density of 8

The mass drug administration programme to eliminate lymphatic filariasis with DEC in Kerala was started in 1997, extended to all the 11 endemic districts by 2005. Since the beginning of Mass drug Administration, the drug consumption rate was found to be not satisfactory. The reasons for noncompliance indicated that the community is not fully convinced about the programme. The knowledge of the medical and para medical workers is certainly a factor in the success of implementation of the programme and is vital. To ascertain the knowledge, a study was undertaken and found not satisfactory. Hence

Symbiotic relationships underlie the evolutionary success of many different life forms. The filarial worms are long, slender nematode parasites that cause considerable pathology in large segments of the world's population. About 25 years ago, investigators first reported the presence of bacterial organisms living inside these parasitic worms. Recent molecular biological studies have indicated that these bacteria belong to the genus Wolbachia, members of which have been known to be associated with numerous species of insects. Elimination of the Wolbachia from the nematodes (by, for instance, tr

There is an imperative need to develop a rapid antibody test that can be used for diagnosis of clinical cases in travelers and expatriates, primary surveillance in areas of unknown endemicity, detection of early infection in childhood and for monitoring chemotherapeutic programs. A rapid-format, simple and qualitative flow through immuno filtration test has been developed for the identification of total IgG antibodies to recombinant filarial antigen WbSXP-1. This test system employs colloidal gold-protein A reagent as the antibody capture reagent. The sensitivity and specificity of the test wa

The existence and the nature of protective immunity in human filariasis continues to be a subject of intense debate. While there is no broad consensus on functional immunity against larval and adult stage parasites, anti-microfilarial immunity has been demonstrated to be mediated by antibodies to the microfilarial sheath. In the present study, circulating filarial antigens (CFA), a marker of active filarial infection in human Bancroftian filariasis, was found to be inversely associated with antibodies to microfilarial sheath in a cohort of 411 subjects representing all categories of filariasis

BACKGROUND: New strategies are emerging for control of filariasis in terms of chemotherapy and vector control. Field application of these tools requires mapping and prioritization of filaria-endemic areas and quantification of the infection/ disease burden. Available procedures are time-consuming, costly and have poor sensitivity. Therefore, rapid assessment procedures need to be developed to assess the disease burden as well as monitor and evaluate control programmes.
METHODS: Data collected on different variables from 25 areas in India and elsewhere were used. The relationship between preva

Four species within the Anopheles punctulatus group of mosquitoes (Diptera: Culicidae) were identified by allozyme analysis of samples collected from thirty-three localities in Guadalcanal, Makira, Malaita, Temotu and Western Provinces in the Solomon Islands and six localities on Efate, Espiritu Santo, Maewo and Malekula Islands in Vanuatu. Three of these species are members of the An.farauti complex. A key is given to identify five species of the An.punctulatus group known to occur in the Solomon Islands using their isoenzyme characteristics. An.farauti No. 1 was widespread in coastal areas o

A survey of the prevalence of bancroftian filariasis was conducted in August-September 1992 in the northern part of the Kassena-Nankana District, Upper East Region, Ghana. 200 compounds from 3 different communities were randomly selected from the vitamin A trial database. All resident compound members were examined for clinical manifestations of lymphatic filariasis and capillary blood was obtained between 21:00 and 01:00 and examined using the counting chamber technique. 1603 people were examined, 741 males and 862 females. The overall prevalence of microfilaraemia was 32.4% (95% confidence i

The histological features in 17 patients (3 males and 14 females) with bancroftian lymphangitis, apparently not associated with lymphadenitis, are described. Degenerative alteration in the worms and a severe inflammatory process were observed in the great majority of the cases. The patterns of tissue reaction varied, including exudative, infiltrative and granulomatous lesions. Eosinophils were present, usually in great numbers. Thirteen out of 14 female subjects showed involvement of the breast lymphatics, and in two of these cases microfilariae were found in addition to adult worms. The breas

Lymphatic filariasis (LF) is a neglected tropical disease affecting over 51 million people in 72 endemic countries. Causative agents of LF are mosquito-borne parasitic nematodes Wuchereria bancrofti, Brugia malayi, and Brugia timori. The adult parasites impact the integrity of lymphatic vessels and damage valves, leading to a remodeling of the lymphatic system and lymphatic dilation. Chronic infections can develop into severe clinical manifestations, primarily lymphedema, hydrocoele, and elephantiasis. Mechanistic studies on the underlying pathology due to the parasite are necessary to better …

Filarial lymphoedema is a tropical parasitic worm illness caused mostly by Wuchereria bancrofti. This disease impacts millions of individuals in endemic areas, causing significant impairment and financial discomfort. Elephantiasis is a chronic lymphatic drainage failure causing swelling in the legs and genitalia. It is a chronic condition characterized by the buildup of lymphatic water, causing pain and reduced limb activity. Genetic abnormalities, trauma, surgery, infection, or cancer cause the disease. Treatment options include antiparasitic drugs, surgical interventions, and nonsurgical int…

Filariae are vector-borne nematodes responsible for an enormous burden of disease. Human lymphatic filariasis, caused by Wuchereria bancrofti, Brugia malayi, and Brugia timori, and onchocerciasis (caused by Onchocerca volvulus) are neglected parasitic diseases of major public health significance in tropical regions. To date, therapeutic efforts to eliminate human filariasis have been hampered by the lack of a drug with sufficient macrofilaricidal and/or long-term sterilizing effects that is suitable for use in mass drug administration (MDA) programs, particularly in areas co-endemic with Loa l…

Lymphatic filariasis is a parasitic disease caused by the worms Wuchereria bancrofti, Brugia malayi and Brugia timori. Three anti-filarial drugs namely Diethylcarbamazine, Ivermectin and Albendazole and their combinations are used as the control strategies for filariasis. The disease has received much attention in drug discovery due to the unavailability of vaccines and the toxic pharmaceutical properties of the existing drugs. In Wolbachia endosymbiont Brugia malayi, the UDP-N-acetylmuramoyl-tripeptide-d-alanyl-d-alanine ligase (MurF) plays a key role in peptidoglycan biosynthesis pathway and…

Rapid and accurate tests are currently needed to identify individuals with high levels of Loa loa microfilaria (mf), so that these individuals may be excluded from mass ivermectin administration campaigns against onchocerciasis and lymphatic filariasis being conducted in areas where Onchocerca volvulus, Wuchereria bancrofti, and L. loa are coendemic. To address this need, colorimetric loop-mediated isothermal amplification (LAMP) assays targeting the L. loa-specific gene sequences LLMF72 and LLMF342 were developed for the detection and quantification of L. loa microfilaremia. Both LAMP assays …
