This work aims to reuse calcium-rich waste from the sugar production industry as a precursor for the synthesis of calcium silicates and subsequently to apply the resulting calcium silicates as functional fillers in photocurable, catalyst-free vitrimer composites. To synthesize calcium silicate compounds, a mixture of calcium-rich waste and quartz, with a CaO/SiO2 molar ratio of 1.0, was prepared. Calcium silicates were synthesized using one-step solid-state calcination (400-1300 °C) and a two-step method combining hydrothermal treatment (200 °C, 16-72 h) with subsequent calcination (400-1300 °

Chemokines play an important role in normal bone physiology and the pathophysiology of many bone diseases. The recent increased focus on the individual roles of this class of proteins in the context of bone has shown that members of the two major chemokine subfamilies-CC and CXC-support or promote the formation of new bone and the remodeling of existing bone in response to a myriad of stimuli. These chemotactic molecules are crucial in orchestrating appropriate cellular homing, osteoblastogenesis, and osteoclastogenesis during normal bone repair. Bone healing is a complex cascade of carefully

INTRODUCTION: The final step of the fertilization process involves gametes adhesion and fusion. JUNO is an essential folate receptor 4 protein present in the ooplasm of oocytes, which binds to IZUMO1, its receptor on the sperm surface. Both proteins are indispensable for the sperm-oocyte interaction, and their absence results in infertility. Despite the importance of JUNO in reproduction, there is still controversy about how different factors affect the functionality of JUNO. Therefore, the goal of this study was to provide a comprehensive overview of what we know so far about the presence and

The existence of endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs) in water and wastewater gives rise to significant environmental concerns. Conventional treatment approaches demonstrate limited capacity for EDC removal. Thus, incorporation of advanced separation procedures becomes essential to enhance the efficiency of EDC removal. In this work, adsorber composite microfiltration polyethersulfone membranes embedded with divinyl benzene polymer particles were created. These membranes were designed for effectively removing a variety of EDCs from water. The adsorber particles were synthesized using precipit

Endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs) are exogenous chemical compounds ubiquitously found in everyday life of the modern world. EDCs enter the human body where they act similarly to endogenous hormones, altering the functions of the endocrine system and causing adverse effects on human health. Bisphenol A (BPA), the principal representative of this class, is a carbon-based synthetic plastic, and a key element in manufacturing cans, reusable water bottles and medical equipment. BPA mimics the actions of estrogen on multiple levels by activating estrogen receptors α and β. BPA regulates various

Congenital heart disease (CHD) represents a major birth defect associated with substantial morbidity and mortality. Although environmental factors are acknowledged as potential contributors to CHD, the underlying mechanisms remain poorly understood. Bisphenol A (BPA), a common endocrine disruptor, has attracted significant attention due to its widespread use and associated health risks. This study examined the effects of maternal BPA exposure on fetal heart development in a murine model. The findings indicated that high-dose BPA exposure resulted in fetal growth restriction, myocardial wall th

Bisphenol A (BPA) is a major environmental pollutant and food contaminant with endocrine-disrupting effects on human and animal health. Perinatal and developmental exposure to BPA has been known to cause hepatotoxicity in adulthood. However, its intergenerational effects in a metabolically challenged population have been scarcely investigated. Our study was designed to assess the intergenerational effect of an environmentally relevant dose of BPA and diet-induced parental obesity on the hepatic health outcome of F1 offspring. Wistar rats were given a high-fat diet to induce obesity, followed b

Type 1 diabetes (T1D) is an autoimmune disease caused by immune-mediated pancreatic β-cell destruction. The endocrine disrupting chemical bisphenol A (BPA) has widespread human exposure and can modulate immune function and the gut microbiome (GMB), which may contribute to the increasing T1D incidence worldwide. It was hypothesized that BPA had sex-dependent effects on T1D by modulating immune homeostasis and GMB. Adult female and male non-obese diabetic (NOD) mice were orally administered BPA at environmentally relevant doses (30 or 300 µg/kg). Antibiotic-treated adult NOD females were exposed

AIMS: The relationship between bisphenol A (BPA) and diabetes remains controversial. This study aims to investigate whether serum BPA level could predict the 5-year incidence of type 2 diabetes (T2D).
METHODS: A nested case-control study was performed among Chinese who participated in the environment, inflammation and metabolic diseases study (2008-2013). Of the 3510 subjects who were free of diabetes, 232 subjects developed diabetes during the 5-year follow-up. Cases and controls were matched for age and gender by a ratio of 1:1. Homoeostasis model assessment was used to estimate basal β-cel

Bisphenol A (BPA) is a component of polycarbonate plastics, epoxy resins and polystyrene found in many common products. Several reports revealed potent in vivo and in vitro effects. In this study we analyzed the effects of the exposure to BPA in the hypothalamic-pituitary-thyroid axis in female rats, both in vivo and in vitro. Female Sprague-Dawley rats were injected sc from postnatal day 1 (PND1) to PND10 with BPA: 500 μg 50 μl-1 oil (B500), or 50 μg 50 μl-1 (B50), or 5 μg 50 μl-1 (B5). Controls were injected with 50 μl vehicle during the same period. Neonatal exposure to BPA did not modify T

Epidemiology evidenced the Bisphenol A (BPA), a chemical found in daily consumer products, as an environmental contributor to obesity and type II diabetes (T2D) in Humans. However, the BPA-mediated effects supporting these metabolic disorders are still unknown. Knowing that obesity and T2D are associated with low-grade inflammation and gut dysbiosis, we performed a longitudinal study in mice to determine the sequential adverse effects of BPA on immune system and intestinal microbiota that could contribute to the development of metabolic disorders. We observed that perinatal exposure to BPA (50

BACKGROUND: Pregnant women are exposed to a mixture of endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs). Gestational EDC exposures may be associated with changes in fetal growth that elevates the risk for poor health later in life, but few studies have examined the health effects of simultaneous exposure to multiple chemicals. This study aimed to examine the association of gestational exposure to five chemical classes of potential EDCs: phthalates and bisphenol A, perfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), and organochlorine pesticides (OCP

Bisphenol A (BPA) is an environmental estrogen with potentially averse effects on public health. We studied the long-term effects of perinatal exposure to BPA on later behavior in adult rats of both sexes. BPA or vehicle was administered orally to mother rats from mating to pups' weaning, at a concentration (0.040 mg/kg) within the range of human exposure. The offspring of both sexes were tested at adolescence (postnatal days 35-45) for novelty preference (experiment 1). After a 3-day familiarization to one side of a two-chamber apparatus, on day 4 rats were allowed to freely explore the whole

The present study evaluated the antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties of Cleome arabica (CA) fruit extract against bisphenol A (BPA)-induced ovarian injury in female Wistar rats. The antioxidant activity was estimated by the total antioxidant capacity (TAC) and superoxide radical (NBT) content. For the in vivo analyses, 24 animals were divided into the following 4 groups: the control group; the BPA group (50 mg/kg BW BPA for 30 days); the BPA + CA group (50 mg/kg BW BPA and 50 mg/kg BW CA); and the CA group (50 mg/kg BW CA). The in vitro results demonstrated that CA exhibited strong an

Endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs) are natural or synthetic compounds that interfere with normal functions of natural hormones in the body, leading to a disruption of the endocrine system. Specifically, EDCs have the potential to cause formation of several hormone-dependent cancers, including breast, ovarian, and prostate cancers. Epithelial mesenchymal transition (EMT) process by which epithelial cells lose their cell polarity and cell-cell adhesion and acquire mesenchymal phenotype is closely associated with malignant transformation and the initiation of cancer metastasis. As a key epithe

The role of reactive oxygen species (ROS) during pollen tube growth has been well established, but its involvement in the early germination stage is poorly understood. ROS production has been reported in germinating tobacco pollen, but evidence for a clear correlation between ROS and germination success remains elusive. Here, we show that ROS are involved in germination and pollen tube formation in kiwifruit. Using labelling with dihydrofluorescein diacetate (H(2) FDA) and nitroblue tetrazolium (NBT), endogenous ROS were detected immediately following pollen rehydration and during the lag phas

A novel dendritic mixed-mode stationary phase (Sil-BD-AFT) with the properties of reversed phase and hydrophilic interaction modes was designed and synthesized. The stationary phase and its intermediates were characterized by Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FT-IR), Thermogravimetric Analysis (TGA), and Elemental Analysis (EA). The characterization results showed that the dendritic polymers were successfully grafted onto the silica particles. The performance of the stationary phase was evaluated using various analytes, such as alkylbenzenes, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), pos

Various endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs) such as bisphenol A (BPA), alkylphenols [4-nonylphenol (NP) and 4-tert octylphenol (OP)] and isobutylparaben (IBP) are a constant concern due to their widespread distribution. It has been reported that some combinations of hormone-disrupting chemicals are much more powerful than any of the chemicals alone. In this study, we measured the expression of an estrogenic biomarker gene, calbindin-D9k (CaBP-9k), and progesterone receptor (PR) to evaluate the individual or combined estrogenic activity of BPA, NP, OP and IBP in GH3 rat pituitary cells.
