The gene encoding acetophenone reductase (APRD), a useful biocatalyst for producing optically pure alcohols, was cloned from the cDNA of Geotrichum candidum NBRC 4597. The gene contained an open reading frame that consisted of 1,029 nucleotides corresponding to 342 amino acid residues. The subunit molecular weight was calculated to be 36.7 kDa. The predicted amino acid sequence did not have significant similarity to those of the acetophenone reductase reported previously. A novel strain of methanogenic archaea, designated MC-20(T), was isolated from the anoxic sediment of a subsurface lake in Movile Cave, Mangalia, Romania. Alcohol affects total body sodium balance, but the molecular mechanism of its effect remains unclear. We used single-channel methods to examine how ethanol affects epithelial sodium channels (ENaC) in A6 distal nephron cells. AIM OF THE STUDY: The red pepper Capsicum baccatum var. pendulum is widely consumed in Brazil, but there are few reports in the literature of studies on its chemical composition and biological properties. In this study the antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities of Capsicum baccatum were evaluated and the total phenolic compounds and flavonoid contents were determined.

Alcohol dehydrogenase (ADH) is a key enzyme in the production and utilization of alcohols. Some also catalyze the formation of carboxylate esters from alcohols and aldehydes.
