Normalisation of real-time RT-PCR gene expression measurements in Arabidopsis thaliana exposed to increased metal concentrations.

Accurate quantification by real-time RT-PCR relies on normalisation of the measured gene expression data. Normalisation with multiple reference genes is becoming the standard, but the best reference genes for gene expression studies within one organism may depend on the applied treatments or the organs and tissues studied. Ideally, reference genes should be evaluated in all experimental systems. A number of candidate reference genes for Arabidopsis have been proposed, which can be used as a starting point to evaluate their expression stability in individual experimental systems by available co

[Guided surgery in a subtemporal approach in CPA tumors?].

BACKGROUND: Computer assisted surgery (CAS) permits the visualization of hidden bony covered structures invisible for the human eye with radiological 3d data sets. The surgeon might be able to orientate anatomically during surgery without having to prepare the according landmarks. This would mean less surgical traumatization and a shorter and smaller operation corridor. METHOD: We determined the use of CAS in a quality assurance analysis with the subtemporal approach in 8 patients with supra-meatal tumors type A of the cerebellopontine angle. Various navigation systems and methods for referen

Vector-borne parasitic diseases: new trends in data collection and risk assessment.

Climates and topography effectively restrict vector-borne infections to certain geographical areas, a clear illustration of how strongly the spatial distributions of these diseases rely on environmental factors. This is hardly a new revelation, but just a few years back, without the support of computer-assisted collection and handling of data, we were far less able to grasp the full picture. Fortunately climate data collection by Remote Sensing (RS) by earth-observing satellites, a technology particularly well suited to pinpointing constraining endemic factors, has not only become affordable b

A comparison of problem lists generated by physicians, nurses, and patients: implications for CPR systems.

Using a sample of 201 patients hospitalized for Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia, this study describes problem lists generated by physicians and examines the overlap among problem lists generated by physicians, nurses, and patients. The findings indicate that the majority of patients in this sample had at least one problem that occurred in more than one problem list. Problems that most frequently appeared in more than one problem list were those related to the medical diagnosis of Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia and its associated physiological symptoms. Problems which occurred uniquely in the nu

Bridging cognition and control through passive eye movement integration in motor imagery brain-computer interfaces.

Motor Imagery (MI) Brain-Computer Interfaces (BCIs) represent a promising technology for neurorehabilitation and assistive control. However, the clinical viability of these systems is frequently hindered by the inherent limitations of electroencephalography (EEG) with regard to its low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), non-stationarity, and high inter-subject variability. Standard decoding methods often fail to capture the complexity of user intention leading to unreliable performance and user frustration. This review proposes a solution to these challenges by advocating for the integration of pass

Improving the reproducibility of mixing-time experiments in stirred single-use bioreactors.

Mixing time is a key metric for characterizing bioreactors, as it governs bulk homogenization and correlates with the underlying flow field and shear exposure. Having knowledge of turbulent flow regimes is particularly important for shear-sensitive (mammalian) cells, which are often cultivated in single-use systems. To characterize such systems in terms of their mixing-time behavior, colorimetric pH-shift assays can be employed. However, operator-dependent variability during the reagent addition often limits the comparability of such experiments. To address this limitation and enhance reproduc

Neurophysiological data augmentation for EEG-fNIRS multimodal features based on a denoising diffusion probabilistic model.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: The hybrid brain computer interfaces (BCI) combining electroencephalogram (EEG) and functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) have attracted extensive attention for overcoming the decoding limitations of the single-modality BCI. With the deepening application of deep learning approaches in BCI systems, its significant performance improvement has become apparent. However, the scarcity of brain signal data limits the performance of deep learning models. METHODS: In this study, we proposed an EEG-fNIRS data augmentation framework based on the combination of denoisin

Performance of computer scientists in the assessment of thyroid nodules using TIRADS lexicons.

OBJECTIVES: Ultrasound (US) evaluation is recognized as pivotal in assessing the risk of malignancy (RoM) of thyroid nodules (TNs). Recently, various US-based risk-classification systems (Thyroid Imaging and Reporting Data Systems [TIRADSs] have been developed. An important ongoing project concerns the creation of an international system (I-TIRADS) using unique terminology. Since online tool allow clinicians and patients to stratify the RoM of any TN, the role of computer scientist (CS) should be relevant. This study explored the performance of CS in assessing TNs across the TIRADS categories.

Adaptive diagnostic reasoning framework for pathology with multimodal large language models.

BACKGROUND: Artificial intelligence enhances pathology screening efficiency, yet clinical adoption remains limited because most systems operate as opaque black boxes. We aim to resolve this opacity by establishing a framework that generates transparent, evidence-linked reasoning to support diagnostic auditing. METHODS: We present a framework that shifts off-the-shelf multimodal large language models from passive pattern recognition to active diagnostic reasoning. Using small labeled subsets from breast and prostate cancer datasets, we employ a two-phase self-learning process to derive diagnos

A mental state aware brain computer interface for adaptive control of electric powered wheelchair.

Brain-computer interfaces (BCI) provide a mobility solution for patients with various disabilities. However, BCI systems require further research to enhance their performance while incorporating the physical and behavioral states of patients into the system. As the principal users of a BCI system, patients with disabilities are emotionally sensitive, so a BCI device that adaptively adjusts to the psychological effects of the patient could provide the foundation for refining BCI applications. This paper focuses on the collection and realization of human electroencephalogram (EEG) signals data,

Laccase-based biocatalytic systems application in sustainable degradation of pharmaceutically active contaminants.

The outflow of pharmaceutically active chemicals (PhACs) exerts a negative impact on biological systems even at extremely low concentrations. For instance, enormous threats to human and aquatic species have resulted from the widespread use of antibiotics in ecosystems, which stimulate the emergence and formation of antibiotic-resistant bacterial species and associated genes. Additionally, it is challenging to eliminate these PhACs by employing conventional physicochemical water treatment techniques. Enzymatic approaches, including laccase, have been identified as a promising alternative to eli
