15-month followup of women methadone patients taught skills to reduce heterosexual HIV transmission.

Heterosexual contact with intravenous drug users accounts for a growing proportion of cases of acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) among women. In an earlier study designed to reduce sexual risk behavior, the authors randomly assigned 91 methadone maintained women to information-only or skills-building conditions. Modest outcomes favored participants in the skills-building group. In this 15-month followup of 62 remaining study participants, skills-training group members were more likely than controls to use condoms. In comparison with controls, members in the skills-building group felt m…

Successful use of levonorgestrel intrauterine system in a HIV positive woman.

After trying other contraceptive methods a woman with HIV disease found use of the levonorgestrel intrauterine system (IUS) very satisfactory, and benefited from the amenorrhoea it induced. She continued to use condoms. Other advantages of using the IUS were freedom from regular clinic visits, no need for daily pill taking, and absence of drug interactions.

Association between premarital HIV testing and ability to negotiate sexual relations among married women in Ethiopia: a population-based study.

HIV/AIDS prevalence in sub-Saharan Africa remains an issue of concern and young women are disproportionately affected by the disease. Premarital HIV testing is one of the key strategies used in HIV prevention since heterosexual sex remains the primary mode of HIV transmission in sub-Saharan Africa. This study uses the 2016 Ethiopia Demographic and Health Survey to examine the association between premarital HIV testing and the ability to negotiate sexual relations among married women aged 15 to 49 years (N = 3,672). Women's ability to negotiate sexual relations was measured using two variables:

HIV prevention strategies and risk of infection: a model-based analysis.

Risk populations for HIV infections tend to neglect condom use, making alternative preventive approaches necessary. Accordingly, we modelled the risk of sexual HIV transmission for condom use vs. use of rapid diagnostic test (RDT) systems with subsequent exclusion of potential sexual partners with a correctly or falsely positive test from unprotected sex with and without the use of HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) in a bio-statistical approach. We combined a previously described model of transmission risk for HIV-exposed individuals with a newly suggested model of risk of HIV exposure for s

Efficacy of a Clinic-Based Safer Sex Program for Human Immunodeficiency Virus-Uninfected and Human Immunodeficiency Virus-Infected Young Black Men Who Have Sex With Men: A Randomized Controlled Trial.

OBJECTIVE: To test the efficacy of a single-session, clinic-based intervention designed to promote condom use among young black men who have sex with men (YBMSM). METHODS: Six hundred YBMSM were enrolled in a randomized controlled trial, using a 12-month observation period. An intent-to-treat analysis was performed, with multiple imputation for missing data. RESULTS: Compared with the reference group, human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-infected men in the intervention group had 64% greater odds of reporting consistent condom use for anal receptive sex over 12 months (estimated odds ratio, 1.

Sexual Behavior With Noncommercial Partners: A Concurrent Partnership Study Among Middle-Aged Female Sex Workers in China.

Female sex workers (FSWs) often engage in concurrent partnerships, meaning they have multiple sexual relationships at the same time. The objective of this study was to investigate sexual concurrency and its associations with condom use and syphilitic infections among FSWs over age 35. Respondent-driven sampling was used to recruit 1,245 FSWs in Nanning, Hefei, and Qingdao, China. FSWs were asked to report whether they had concurrent partners in the past six months. Concurrency was defined as engagement in sex with commercial clients and (1) husbands and boyfriends (n = 167); (2) husbands only

Mathematical Assessment of the Role of Early Latent Infections and Targeted Control Strategies on Syphilis Transmission Dynamics.

A new multi-stage deterministic model for the transmission dynamics of syphilis, which incorporates disease transmission by individuals in the early latent stage of syphilis infection and the reversions of early latent syphilis to the primary and secondary stages, is formulated and rigorously analysed. The model is used to assess the population-level impact of preventive (condom use) and therapeutic measures (treatment using antibiotics) against the spread of the disease in a community. It is shown that the disease-free equilibrium of the model is globally-asymptotically stable whenever the as

Reduced Sexual Risk Behaviors Among Young Men of Color Who Have Sex with Men: Findings from the Community-Based Organization Behavioral Outcomes of Many Men, Many Voices (CBOP-3MV) Project.

In 2006, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) funded community-based organizations (CBOs) to deliver Many Men, Many Voices (3MV) to young men of color who have sex with men. Although 3MV, a group-level behavioral intervention designed to reduce human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) risk behaviors of black men who have sex with men (MSM), has shown effectiveness when delivered in a controlled research environment, there is limited evidence that the intervention is associated with similar outcomes in "real world" settings. For the current project, CDC funded three CBOs to conduct ou

Effects of the Gama Cuulu radio serial drama on HIV-related behavior change in Zambia.

The Gama Cuulu radio serial drama is written and produced in Zambia's Southern Province. It promotes behavior change and service use to prevent HIV transmission. The authors evaluated the effects of Gama Cuulu on intermediate outcomes (e.g., perceived norms), as well as number of sexual partners, condom use, and HIV testing in the past year among adults between 18 and 49 years of age. The authors used a pretest/posttest assessment with a comparison group design, with Southern Province as the intervention area and Western Province as the comparison area. Approximately 1,500 in-person interviews

Reducing sexually-transmitted infection risk in young people with first-episode psychosis.

There is emerging evidence that young people with first-episode psychosis are at greater risk of sexually-transmitted infections (STI) than their peers. Theoretical constructs central to behavioural change theories, broadly defined as sexual health-related knowledge, attitudes, and beliefs, have guided most sexual risk-reduction interventions in other at-risk populations. The role of these constructs in the sexual risk behaviour of young people with early psychosis remains unknown. A convenience sample of 67 young people with first-episode psychosis and 48 healthy controls matched on a number

Sexually transmitted infections among brothel-based sex workers in Tel-Aviv area, Israel: high prevalence of pharyngeal gonorrhoea.

Sex workers play a major role in spreading sexually transmitted infections (STIs). We studied the prevalence rates and risk factors for STIs among 300 brothel-based sex workers in Tel-Aviv. Throat swabs were cultured for Neisseria gonorrhoeae, urine samples were tested by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) for Chlamydia trachomatis and N. gonorrhoeae, and sera were tested for syphilis, human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and type 2 herpes simplex virus (HSV) antibodies. N. gonorrhoeae was cultured from throat samples of 9.0% of participants; PCR testing of urine was positive for C. trachomatis in

Childhood neglect and adulthood involvement in HIV-related risk behaviors.

OBJECTIVE: Much research has been done to examine the long-term effects of being victimized by sexual, physical, and/or emotional abuse in childhood, but much less research has focused on the impact of childhood neglect experiences. This study examines the role that childhood neglect has on adult women's involvement in HIV-related risky behaviors. METHODS: The data come from a study of 250 "at risk" women living in the Atlanta, GA metropolitan area, most of whom were African American. Data were collected in face-to-face interviews between 1997 and 2000. Multiple regression was used to explore

Use of Behavior Change Techniques in Digital HIV Prevention Programs for Adolescents and Young People: Systematic Review.

BACKGROUND: HIV infections have caused severe public health and economic burdens to the world. Adolescents and young people continue to constitute a large proportion of newly diagnosed HIV cases. Digital health interventions have been increasingly used to prevent the rising HIV epidemic. Behavior change techniques (BCTs) are intervention components designed to modify the underlying processes that regulate behavior. The BCT taxonomy offers a systematic approach to identifying, extracting, and coding these components, providing valuable insights into effective intervention strategies. However, f

Sexually transmitted diseases in homosexual and bisexual males from a cohort of human immunodeficiency virus negative volunteers (Project Horizonte), Belo Horizonte, Brazil.

Sexually transmitted diseases (STD) are very frequent in the whole world. Males who do not use a condom during their sexual relations are at great risk. We report cases of STD during six months of observation, among homosexual/bisexual males who participate in the Project Horizonte. There were 16 cases of genital warts, 6 cases of human immunodeficiency virus infection, 24 cases of unspecific urethritis, 28 cases of herpes simplex virus infection, 30 cases of syphilis, 58 cases of gonorrhea and 84 cases of pediculosis. We concluded that a condom must be used in all sexual relations and new cou

Effect of pre-exposure prophylaxis on risky sexual behaviour of female sex workers in Dakar, Senegal: A randomised controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: HIV prevention through pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) may encourage riskier sexual behaviours that undermine the protection afforded by PrEP and generate negative spillovers through sexually transmitted infections (STIs). Tests for such risk compensatory behaviour in high-risk populations, such as female sex workers (FSWs), are lacking. This study aims to assess whether risk compensatory behaviours were observed among FSWs in Senegal after the rollout of PrEP. METHODS AND FINDINGS: In a randomised controlled trial with a Zelen design, we stratified FSWs in Dakar (Senegal) by self
