Spatial and discrimination learning in rodents infected with the nematode Strongyloides ratti.

Recent work has shown that mice with subclinical parasitic infections suffer impaired spatial learning and memory, as assayed in an open-field water maze. Although the mechanism underlying this effect is not clear, the phenomenon has been reported following infection with both a protozoan parasite (Eimeria vermiformis) and a gastrointestinal nematode (Heligmosomoides polygyrus). In a variety of experiments, we examined the effects of a different gastrointestinal nematode, Strongyloides ratti, on the ability of rats and mice to learn a spatial or a discrimination task. Animals were tested at va

Pharmacological profile of a deuterium-substituted mirfentanil derivative, OHM10579, in rhesus monkeys.

The discriminative-stimulus, respiratory, and antinociceptive effects of OHM10579, an isotopic isomer of mirfentanil, were characterized in rhesus monkeys. In monkeys discriminating nalbuphine, 0.32 mg/kg of OHM10579 partially substituted for nalbuphine. In monkeys treated daily with 3.2 mg/kg of morphine and discriminating 0.01 mg/kg of naltrexone, 0.32 mg/kg of OHM10579 substituted for naltrexone. In morphine-abstinent monkeys, morphine reversed naltrexone-lever responding, an effect attenuated by OHM10579. The shift to the right in the morphine dose-effect curve was greater 2 h after 0.32 m

Task dependency of visual processing in the human visual system.

In this review we contrast passive, attribute driven processing in the visual system with an active, task-dependent view and summarize the evidence from our Positron Emission Tomography (PET) work supporting the task-dependent view. The PET studies involved comparison of regional Cerebral Blood Flow (rCBF) in closely related detection and discrimination tasks. The major finding reported is that the same retinal input or input containing only a single cue activates different extrastriate areas depending on the task.

Analysis of free-time contingencies as positive versus negative reinforcement.

Providing a short break contingent on completed work may increase responding through positive reinforcement (e.g., access to preferred activities) or negative reinforcement (e.g., escape form work). In this investigation, three analyses conducted with a boy with profound mental retardation showed that (a) a 20-s break increased responding more than a positive reinforcer (cola) did, and (b) the reinforcing effect of a 20-s break were affected by the availability of positive reinforcers during the break were affected by the availability of positive reinforcers during the break.

Representations in learning new faces: evidence from prosopagnosia.

We report the performance of a prosopagnosic patient on face learning tasks under different encoding instructions (i.e., levels of processing manipulations). R.J. performs at chance when given no encoding instructions or when given "shallow" encoding instruction to focus on facial features. By contrast, he performs relatively well with "deep" encoding instructions to rate faces in terms of personality traits or when provided with semantic and name information during the study phase. We propose that the improvement associated with deep encoding instructions may be related to the establishment o

Coping styles differ between recovered and nonrecovered women with bulimia nervosa, but not between recovered women and non-eating-disordered control subjects.

We examined potential differences in dispositional coping styles among women who had recovered from DSM-III-R bulimia nervosa (RBN; N = 40), women actively suffering from the disorder (N = 40), and women with no history of eating disturbance (control; N = 40). Using a 60-item self-report measure, we found that women with active bulimia nervosa were less likely than the other two groups to utilize active coping, planning, and seeking emotional support, and less likely than the recovering bulimia nervosa group to focus on and vent emotions. They were more likely than control subjects to use beha

7-Chloro-3-methyl-3,4-dihydro-2H-1,2,4-benzothiadiazine S,S-dioxide (IDRA 21), a congener of aniracetam, potently abates pharmacologically induced cognitive impairments in patas monkeys.

We report here on the ability of IDRA 21 and aniracetam, two negative allosteric modulators of glutamate-induced DL-alpha-amino-3-hydroxy-5-methyl-4-isoxazolepropionic acid (AMPA) receptor desensitization, to attenuate alprazolam-induced learning deficit in patas monkeys working in a complex behavioral task. In one component of a multiple schedule (repeated acquisition or "learning"), patas monkeys acquired a different four-response chain each session by responding sequentially on three keys in the presence of four discriminative stimuli (geometric forms or numerals). In the other component (p

Predicting return to work for lower back pain patients receiving worker's compensation.

The results of a prospective study of 134 patients with lower back pain suggest that nonorganic factors are better predictors of return to work than organic findings. Patients who returned to work had fewer job, personal, or family related problems. There were no significant differences between patients who returned to work and those who did not when comparing myelograms, computed tomographic scans, or roentgenographs. The only significant difference in physical organic findings was for muscle atrophy. Patients who did not return to work had a statistically higher incidence rate of muscle atro

The performance of postencephalitic amnesic subjects on two behavioural tests of memory: concurrent discrimination learning and delayed matching-to-sample.

The performance of a group of three postencephalitic subjects with anterograde amnesia was examined on a series of concurrent visual discrimination problems and on a test of visual recognition, delayed matching-to-sample. These tests were chosen as they have been used to assess experimental models of anterograde amnesia in nonhuman primates. In comparison with a group of normal subjects the postencephalitic group were impaired on the more difficult concurrent discrimination problems. They also performed poorly on the matching-to-sample task when given lists of items to remember or given increa

Rats exposed prenatally to alcohol exhibit impairment in spatial navigation test.

Prenatal exposure to ethanol causes learning disabilities and low I.Q. scores. The objective of the present studies was to investigate whether exposure of rats to ethanol in utero, would induce a deficit in spatial memory in adult life. Pregnant rats were fed with an ethanol diet from day 1 of pregnancy till parturition. Control rats were either pair-fed with an isocaloric sucrose diet or were fed with lab-chow ad libitum. On the first day of birth, offspring exposed to ethanol in utero were placed with a control mother fed with lab-chow, while offspring of the lab-chow fed dams were placed wi

Assessment of the abuse potential of acetorphan, an enkephalinase inhibitor.

The discriminative stimulus properties, reinforcing effects and physical dependence potential of acetorphan, a parenterally-active enkephalinase (E.C. 3.4.21.11) inhibitor, were assessed in the present studies. Rats trained to discriminate 2 mg/kg morphine from saline did not generalize to acetorphan at any dose tested (5-50 mg/kg). Acetorphan also had minimal reinforcing effects in rhesus monkeys. When acetorphan was substituted for cocaine, one dose (300 micrograms/kg per inj.) maintained responding somewhat above the range of vehicle values in only two of the four monkeys tested. In physica

The role of the binaural test in filtered speech audiometry.

The value of the binaural resynthesis test administered according to Matzker's principle can be estimated only when a comparable monaural test can be used as a control. The most common positive finding in the filtered speech test is asymmetrical discrimination. Both parts of the message delivered to either ear must therefore have the same intelligibility in normal material. Binaural intelligibility is highly resistant to degenerative changes in the auditory system, for example. Positive findings in the binaural test are encountered frequently in brain stem lesions with vascular or traumatic ae

Predicting PTSD in women with a history of childhood rape.

The impact of factors that predispose childhood rape victims to develop posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is important in understanding both the impact of childhood rape and the development of PTSD as a psychological disorder. The present study attempted to determine which crime, perpetrator, victim, and aftermath characteristics are related to PTSD status. A national representative sample of women (N = 3,220) were interviewed about their history of rape, trauma-related variables, and PTSD status. Consistent with research on crime victims, life threat and physical injury discriminated PTSD

No Evidence for Unconscious Attentional Bias in People With Clinically Significant Symptoms of Functional Gastrointestinal Disorders: A Study Using the Emerging Electroencephalographic Paradigm of Fast Periodic Visual Stimulation.

BACKGROUND: Disorders of gut-brain interaction (DGBIs) present a significant burden on global healthcare systems, yet their underlying mechanisms remain poorly understood. Emerging evidence suggests a role for unconscious psychological processes, particularly attention. This study seeks to detect unconscious attention patterns in people meeting DGBI diagnostic criteria using electroencephalographic (EEG) fast periodic visual stimulation (FPVS), a novel passive method offering high temporal resolution. METHODS: Alongside 20 healthy controls, 22 female psychology students meeting Rome IV criter

Construction and validation of the Approve questionnaires - Measures of relating to voices and other people.

BACKGROUND: The effectiveness of psychological treatments for auditory hallucinations ('voices') needs to be enhanced. Some forms of novel treatment are working within relational frameworks to support patients to relate assertively to distressing voices. Yet, no measure of assertive relating to voices is available to assess the extent to which this skill is developed during therapy. This study aimed to assess the factor structure and validity of two new questionnaires: a measure of relating to voices and a measure of social relating. METHODS: The relating measures were developed in consultati

The dominance of introspective measures and what this implies: The example of environmental attitude.

The behavioral sciences, including most of psychology, seek to explain and predict behavior with the help of theories and models that involve concepts (e.g., attitudes) that are subsequently translated into measures. Currently, some subdisciplines such as social psychology focus almost exclusively on measures that demand reflection or even introspection when administered to persons. We argue that such a focus hinders progress in explaining behavior. One major reason is that such an exclusive focus on reflections results in common method bias, which then produces spurious relations, or in other

A proposal to evaluate mechanistic efficacy of hallucinogens in addiction treatment.

Current treatments for addiction are frequently ineffective. Hallucinogenic therapy has been indicated as helpful for a range of substance use disorders, yet this approach remains understudied and publicly unavailable. It is nonetheless a promising treatment, which has significant, long-term beneficial effects with single doses and a profile characterized by general safety, low toxicity, and non-addictiveness. However, pharmacological interventions, such as hallucinogens, should not be offered if the same effects (e.g. psychological insights/mystical experiences) and outcomes (e.g. decreased d
