Surgical procedure of intratympanic injection and inner ear pharmacokinetics simulation in domestic pigs.

Introduction: One major obstacle in validating drugs for the treatment or prevention of hearing loss is the limited data available on the distribution and concentration of drugs in the human inner ear. Although small animal models offer some insights into inner ear pharmacokinetics, their smaller organ size and different barrier (round window membrane) permeabilities compared to humans can complicate study interpretation. Therefore, developing a reliable large animal model for inner ear drug delivery is crucial. The inner and middle ear anatomy of domestic pigs closely resembles that of humans

Pacemaker-twiddler's syndrome in a seven-year-old male domestic shorthaired cat.

A seven-year-old male neutered domestic shorthaired cat underwent surgical placement of a permanent epicardial pacemaker following diagnosis of intermittent second and third degree atrioventricular block, which was responsible for 'seizure-like' episodes. Although the pacemaker implant was successful, the cat started experiencing near-syncopal episodes approximately one year after surgery. Ambulatory Holter recording showed periods of loss of capture. Therefore, the pacemaker was interrogated using incremental energy output, which did not evoke any capture, even at the highest possible pulse v

Different Founding Effects Underlie Dominant Blue Eyes (DBE) in the Domestic Cat.

During the last twenty years, minimal white spotting associated with blue eyes was selected by feline breeders to create the Altai, Topaz, and Celestial breeds. Additionally, certain breeders introduced this trait in their lineages of purebred cats. The trait has been called "dominant blue eyes (DBE)" and was confirmed to be autosomal dominant in all lineages. DBE was initially described in outbred cats from Kazakhstan and Russia and in two purebred lineages of British cats from Russia, as well as in Dutch Maine Coon cats, suggesting different founding effects. We have previously identified tw

Inhibition of testicular development by suppressing neonatal LH rise in male domestic pigs.

The neonatal increase in circulating luteinizing hormone (LH) is crucial for testicular development. In male pigs, blood LH levels start to increase approximately 1 week after birth and return to basal level by 5-6 weeks of age. This study tested the hypothesis that neonatal treatment with a combination of estrogens and androgens suppresses LH secretion and thereby inhibits testicular development. On Day 1 after birth, piglets received a slow-release implant containing estradiol (E2, 8-40 mg) and trenbolone acetate (TBA, 40-200 mg) or remained intact. At 4 weeks of age, mean serum LH concentra

Multimodal preoperative imaging for transcatheter mitral valve replacement in the domestic sheep model.

Preclinical in vivo evaluation is an essential step in the progression of new cardiac devices into patient use, with studies predominantly performed in the domestic sheep model. A growing area of interest in cardiac device development is transcatheter mitral valve replacement (TMVR). Clinically, multimodal imaging, or computed tomography (CT) and echocardiography (echo) are used extensively to preoperatively determine mitral valve morphology prior to an intervention, but there is no description on how these modalities can be implemented to support preclinical studies. The purpose of this study

First report of Hepatozoon felis infection in a domestic cat (Felis catus) in Iran.

A 6-year-old male domestic short-haired cat (Felis catus) was presented with weakness, anorexia, fever, icterus, a painful abdomen, ruffled hair and a tick infestation, and it had no prior surgery. Laboratory analysis revealed left-shifted neutrophils, thrombocytopenia, low albumin content and high serum bilirubin concentration as well as activities of hepatic enzymes including alanine aminotransferase and aspartate aminotransferase. Azotemia and increased serum levels of creatinine and urea were also recorded. In Giemsa-stained blood smear, Hepatozoon gamonts were observed within neutrophils.

Possible sinoatrial node dysfunction in a 6-month-old domestic shorthair cat.

CASE SUMMARY: A 6-month-old male entire domestic shorthair cat was presented to the ophthalmology department for nasolacrimal duct cannulation and flushing, and castration under general anaesthesia. On pre-anaesthetic assessment, the cat had a heart rate of 90 beats/min (bpm). Clinical examination was unremarkable, although the cat appeared stressed. The echocardiogram was within normal limits. An ambulatory electrocardiogram (ECG) monitor was fitted overnight, and analysis of the ECG revealed a sinus rhythm with a lower than normal heart rate. The mean 1 min rate was 98 bpm. There was a slowe

Experimental infection of domestic turkeys with lymphoproliferative disease virus of North American origin.

Lymphoproliferative disease virus (LPDV) was first documented in wild turkeys in North America in 2009. LPDV infection is often subclinical but can manifest as lymphoid proliferation or round cell neoplasia. Despite high prevalence across many sampled areas corresponding to declining populations of wild turkeys, knowledge regarding LPDV pathogenesis, risk factors for disease development, and associated impacts on population dynamics are unknown. To understand transmission, viral shedding, and tissue tropism, we inoculated 21 domestic turkeys via the oral cavity, crop, nasal cavity, subcutis, o

Right cranial lung lobe torsion in a domestic ferret (Mustela putorius furo).

A 3-year-old male castrated domestic ferret presented with a 24 h history of lethargy, weakness, and anorexia. The ferret was tachypneic, painful, dehydrated, pale, and obtunded on physical examination. Radiographs and thoracic CT were utilized to diagnose a 360° right cranial lung lobe torsion (LLT) with secondary pneumothorax and pleural effusion. This was confirmed on gross necropsy and histopathology. The LLT was suspected to be secondary to previous trauma based on chronic bilateral rib fractures. Lung lobe torsions are life-threatening conditions infrequently described in veterinary medi

Modeling the impact of short-term displacement of domestic animals on the transmission dynamics of brucellosis.

Brucellosis, a prevalent zoonotic disease caused by bacteria from the genus Brucella, presents a substantial public health and economic challenges worldwide. In this paper, we formulate a two-patch deterministic model to investigate the impact of short-term displacement of domestic animals on the transmission dynamics of brucellosis within and between patches with heterogeneous risk of infection. The model analysis is performed, and the basic reproduction number ( R 0 ) is computed and used in the stability analysis of equilibria. A global sensitivity analysis is performed using Latin Hypercu

Prevalence of gastrointestinal parasites in domestic pigs from family farms in northeastern Argentina.

Domestic pigs serve as significant hosts and reservoirs for multiple parasite species, some specific to pigs and many others of zoonotic importance. This study aimed to assess the prevalence of intestinal parasites in pigs within a rural area in northeastern Argentina. We also examined demographic information, breeding conditions, and exposure factors associated with parasite presence. Pig feces were subjected to coprological examination through flotation and sedimentation techniques. Modified Ziehl-Neelsen technique was employed to examine oocysts of Cryptosporidium spp. In total, 29 family f

Domestic dogs in indigenous Amazonian communities: Key players in Leptospira cycling and transmission?

BACKGROUND: Leptospirosis is the world's most common zoonotic disease. Mitigation and control rely on pathogen identification and understanding the roles of potential reservoirs in cycling and transmission. Underreporting and misdiagnosis obscure the magnitude of the problem and confound efforts to understand key epidemiological components. Difficulties in culturing hamper the use of serological diagnostics and delay the development of DNA detection methods. As a result, especially in complex ecosystems, we know very little about the importance of different mammalian host species in cycling an

Enteric parasites Cyclospora cayetanensis and Cryptosporidium hominis in domestic and wildlife animals in Ghana.

BACKGROUND: Enteric parasitic infections remain a major public health problem globally. Cryptosporidium spp., Cyclospora spp. and Giardia spp. are parasites that cause diarrhea in the general populations of both developed and developing countries. Information from molecular genetic studies on the speciation of these parasites and on the role of animals as vectors in disease transmission is lacking in Ghana. This study therefore investigated these diarrhea-causing parasites in humans, domestic rats and wildlife animals in Ghana using molecular tools. METHODS: Fecal samples were collected from
