Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) has been applied in diagnosing amebic liver infection by detecting pathogenic Entamoeba histolytica DNA in liver aspirates. Oligonucleotide primers found to be specific for the gene encoding the 30 kDa molecule of this pathogenic ameba were used in the test. Reactivation of latent infection is the principal mechanism relating Toxoplasma gondii and Pneumocystis carinii to HIV. Amebiasis, caused by Entamoeba histolytica, is an intestinal disease that can lead to severe complications such as ulcers and abscesses. In this study, the carriage of intestinal parasites was investigated in a total of 73 children (35 girls, 38 boys) in the 1-6 age-group in two special day nurseries in the city of Rize. A method is described for successfully establishing caecal amoebiasis in hamsters which were not fed and which were pretreated with 1 ml of magnesium sulphate every 24 hours for three days and then given 12 x 10(5) trophozoites of the HM-1 axenic strain or 18 x 10(5) trophozoites of the HK-9 axenic strain of Entamoeba histolytica by the oral route. The first case concerned a German whose disease was not diagnosed during the asymptomatic phase (2 years' duration) or in the acute phase during the last 3 weeks before death. Concentration of protozoal cysts from faeces by the formol-ether method and faecal culture on Robinson's medium were studied to determine their diagnostic value among patients attending a sexually transmitted diseases clinic in Edinburgh.
